No butts about it: Devil May Cry 5 players have discovered Sony has censored the PlayStation 4 version of the game for Western audiences. There’s a cutscene where Dante carries a naked Trish off his bike, but her butt has been covered up by a lens flare. In another scene, Lady drops her towel and reveals her backside, but again, it’s covered by light. These butts are on full display on the Japanese PS4 and worldwide Xbox and PC versions.

So, what's going on? Current speculation points to a recent Sony policy that appears to be about toning down sexual content on PS4. This is something that's cropped up a few times over the past year or so. Back in October 2018, for example, Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal's PS4 release was delayed after Sony told its publisher to remove the controversial Intimacy Mode (the Steam version, by the way, included the Intimacy Mode). At the time, the game's localisation producer said this was the result of "a brand new policy" at Sony. Was Devil May Cry 5 on PS4 changed under the same policy?

Im not sure US seems to be the top dog on censor ship way before SJW came into the picture.
With all the bleeping ang blurring on tv

The human body is not to be seen....

Shot, knifed, axed, burned, sliced, diced, or any other method of tissue destruction is okay, as long as the body squirting blood is covered in clothing.

So this is just the US version then? As Western and Worldwide in this context to me means the same thing.

Afaik, this is one of the first games to be censored at all in the US. Video games enjoy greater first amendment rights than TV and movies in some ways.

I wouldn't really say this is censorship, no government agency told Sony that they can't show butts. Censorship heavily implies that some regulatory force is behind it.

I know if I google the word the dictionary won't say that, but I fail to see this as problematic because it's just a company doing the censorship, they can censor the woman's ankles for all I care

Yea, this isn't particularly egregious to me. If Sony wants to have their own standards for particular geographic regions, that's up to Sony. So long as it isn't content-based (vs artistic differences) or story-line determining, it doesn't bother me.

So a rated R (mature) game intended for 17+ ....
Well fuck me, I guess near adult western teens can't handle a little ass crack from a female CGI character.
Fuck off Sony, this isn't a kid's game.

This seems to me a misguided decision by Sony alone, because the PC and XBox versions are unchanged, rather than some "SJW" conspiracy.

Move along folks, there's no outrage to be found here.

First they came for the yoga pants, and I did not speak out.

Then they came for the sideboob, and I did not speak out.

Then they came for the butt crack, and there was no one left to speak for me.

I'm against censorship butt I'd be ok with parental controls on consoles, wouldn't be hard to implement and game devs could add the resources in for both types of play. I use opendns when I set stuff up for kids.

PC SJW's at work again. Consoles do have parental controls but parents never use them. Maybe Sony and Microsoft could put a little tracker thing on parental controls that lets them know if a console's parental control are actually turned on. Let the SJWs look at that data and then go blame the parents.

Meanwhile the Western version of RE2 is happy to show you someone's face sheared apart in all of its grotesque detail.

Butts are where I draw the line though, good on them for keeping this FILTH out of my M rated game.

That's just because mainstream games have avoided nudity since it would cause the game to get an AO rating and most stores won't sell AO games. Off the top of my head San Andreas got switched to an AO rating until they completely stripped out the code that the hot coffee mod activated and the first Witcher game censored out some nipples on the NA version to avoid an AO rating.

Actually if you have been following it Sony has been doing alot of censoring Japanese games even those without a western release.

Censoring nudity but being perfectly fine with all manner of violence is the pinnacle of hipocracy. It's how you know that it has absolutely nothing to do with protecting anyone but the religious rightwing that has been brain washed to think nudity and sex are bad.

The problem is that there are M rated games that are fine for a ten year old, and some that are not. On the PS4 all you can do is select whether to allow, or disallow, games based on rating.

...

This actually puts the whole situation in better context. It's a (misguided) financial decision they are making here. They want to maximize profits on a global market place and not have to worry if game X, Y, or Z will be "controversial" in region A, B or C. Why they are choosing to censor games with no chance of release outside of Japan is another story though...who knows what's going on there.

Oh no! Not a butt!

I could understand censoring full frontal stuff or even just topless stuff, but a butt from behind? That passes even PG13 standards in the U.S. right?

In a post Conan Exiles world, why censor anything anymore? :p

Go watch some porn tharr be booty tharrr matey.

It's not about wanting to see nudity or sex in a game. It's about the message being communicated that such things are worse than graphic violence and horror. You say and portray that message to kids, teens and adults enough times in every aspect of life and people start to believe it and it impacts policies in other things that maybe matter more than video games.
