Hot (?) Playstation Classic - 40$

The simplest mod now involves:
Dropping an image onto a USB Stick, and buying a 2 port USB splitter. Oh, and downloading some ROMs.

It's not the /best/ mod, but it's the easiest.
Sure. Except now instead of having one contained box, you've got stuff hanging off of it and still have to mess with it. I've seen the how-tos, I've glanced through the various links in this thread. Ain't nobody got time for that. It's not a lack of ability to be able to do it, it's a lack of interest in having to do it compared to the many other things I could be doing.

When it hits $25 maybe I'll bite for arcade games in the bedroom. I have an rpii now and barely use it, it gets used as a media player when I travel more than anything.

I have a feeling a rpii zero + usb hub + sd card (like $20-25) is equivalent or better.

I still have an OG Genesis in the bedroom, about once a year I play Sinistar or Joust or Aladdin on it... that's it.

From what I've read, it's not better in terms of specs, but it has better optimizations, so it probably runs better overall. I mean a Retropie RPi3 build will run just as well as a PSClassic with less powerful hardware.

At $40 the PSC is a better deal, unless you already have a case, SD card and controllers.
Better deal if you only want to play psx games and limited to the ones they offer, otherwise you're gimping yourself to save like 20$

The fact that the NES Mini can emulate PSX games better than this thing is inexcusable. :(

Not true. Don't forget that over half the games, 11 to be exact on the PSC are the European PAL versions on the 50Hz standard. Which the isn't the hardware's fault for lower framerates but the ROM Sony decided to use, you can change that by hitting select & Triangle to run them in NTSC (North American Standard) in the options menu, which will make them run at 60fps. Additionally, running the PSC on Retroboot 0.4.1 will run all of your games at 60fps, even with most shaders.

Mine may take a couple more days. Shipped from Cali on thursday. No updates since.

Cant find it, but here is a post of one that is reported to work,

They are still working on OTG cable support for the PSC, after that, it will allow us to free up the 2nd player port.

But the above image shows it working off this one without having to be powered (which has been an issue since the system itself doesnt have enough power to power USB Hub)

I'm going to order this and see if it works. Will report back with findings :)

Oh forgot, Yes I ordered the above USB hub for 2 players, and yes, it works great. No need to wait for OTG support.

Had my wife snag me one this afternoon! Sucked she had to price match their own web site. :/

Yeah Wally world isn't the fastest when adjusting prices from website to store...Had to do the same on one of mine.

I'll bite at $20. What I really want is an Amiga classic. Yeah yeah I know we can do all of this with emulators. Still.

If you want to play retro/classics, then you can always go big... really big.

Just picked up a PI 3 B+ Canakit (~$50) and a Samsung Evo 256Gb micro SD card (~$40) off of Amazon.

Slap a spare PS4 controller to dedicate to it (pairs/works great via bluetooth) and wireless USB keyboard (a Logitech K400 works great).

Then load the card up with the Kitchen Sink PiPiggies RetroPi image:

Hook it up to your big screen via HDMI, and you'll then have over 25,497 games to screw around with - every retro console/gaming system/computer imaginable. Yes, that is not a typo, 25,497 games.

Or better yet get an nvidia shield console

Not following you Stoly. How is it better? The Shield costs $190 and only comes with 16gb of storage. What sets the Pi 3 B+ apart is that it's tiny, the board costs $38 and it can be loaded up with 256gb of storage for $40.

The current gen Shield doesn't have a memory slot. Slap one image onto the Pi and you are done as to software and the games.

For full up power/storage/capability for this, "better" to me is best served via an HTPC. But that sort of defeats the whole point of having something that is small, cheap, and goes anywhere.

I've recently seen deals on the shield for as low as $120 or $140 without controller.

But even at $190 (with controller) is an awesome deal. I have one myself and I can say is the best emulation console bar none, actually it has replaced my PC for retrogaming. It can play all those 25,497 games plus Dreamcast, Saturn and Gamecube games. The Rpi doesn't come close.

Having HTPC capabilities plus game streaming is just icing on the cake

25,497 games sounds awesome on paper, but in reality I'll never play 25,000 of them. Lol.

I already have a Raspberry Pi but the PS Classic for $40 was an inexpensive nod to nostalgia. I may eventually go the Shield route because those Sega systems that you mentioned had some awesome games, plus I don't have an existing streaming box. I always have a hard time coming up with birthday/Christmas gift ideas for myself and that'd be a fun toy.

Supposedly Gamecube emulation on the Shield leaves a little to be desired in terms of speed, but PSP is reportedly buttery smooth and that would probably make up for it. I need to find a good source for ROMs for all of these games that I own. ;)
