According to a report from Bloomberg, industry insiders say YouTube TV and Hulu are outperforming the competition in the live online TV services industry. Hulu's subscription total has nearly eclipsed the 2 million mark and YouTube TV has already broken the 1 million mark in subscribers. Both services are adding hundreds of thousands of customers each quarter. People are flocking to the services for "skinny bundles" which offer a narrow lineup of channels. Many consumers see this as a viable alternative to cable TV's hundreds of channels and high bills. Other similar services such as DirecTV Now are losing subscribers. "Sling is offering a 40 percent discount to attract new subscribers."

Hulu and YouTube represent a rare bit of good news for TV. They may be benefiting from a superior user experience compared with Sling or DirecTV Now, according to Alan Wolk, co-founder of the media consultancy TVRev. "They've done a better job of branding," Wolk said. "The interfaces are slick and modern looking, Hulu in particular.'" It also helps that neither YouTube nor Hulu is a cable or satellite company, which routinely rank among the least admired by U.S. consumers.

Youtube TV just works. Traffic cripples most other services, from my experience.
I literally just subscribed to YouTube TV today (after the 5 day trial expired). The quality is the same (or better in a few cases, where 1080P is available) than a cable box (sports is great at 60FPS). It also just works like a cable box (other than it can record as many shows at once as you want). You can even start playing a recording while the show is still airing and catch up to live with no issues. I watch almost exclusively sports and I have had 0 issues with YouTube TV so far. I tried PSVue a few years ago and the video quality wasn't as good as my cable box at the time.

and cable providers will just recoup the cost by implementing stronger data caps and higher internet bills..........................cause you know......it cost so much to provide data....
You know that's right. Hopefully it will be a short lived position as Starlink shows up or 5g or Starry or some other alternative ISP shows up.

Sling TV has absolute trash service both on an application level and a customer support level. Switched to Hulu live when I was able and loved it. YTTV is great as well.

Future Man makes a Hulu trial worth the effort.

Sci-Fi themed and funniest show in a *long* time. Binged the two seasons last week.

Yes indeed....Future Man is fantastic. Hulu is worth it just for that. Been watching Hulu more than Netflix lately, but between the two there's more content than anyone could keep up with anyway.

I absolutely love YouTube TV thus far. It works a lot like YouTube except it is live or recorded TV instead. You setup which shows you'd like it to record and they just appear in your library when available. If you start watching something on one of the channels and go watch something else, it'll pause the show you were just watching and record the rest of it for you to watch later. Another neat thing I just ran across is that it keeps an OnDemand section of movies that have played on any of your channels recently so you can watch them at any time.

YouTube TV has no channels my family wants. It sucks.

Sure it works well but who cares when it doesn't offer the channels your family needs ?

psvue user here. Looked into Hulu and could not stand the UI, youtube tv also doesn't have the line up psvue has.
psvue cloud dvr is fantastic, the UI is seamless and there have been no streaming issues on my end at all.
Surprised the article did not compare the sony offering rather then touting the wonders of youtube tv.

My only gripe is that quite a bit of content streams at 720p, NFL games for example. I mean, really?

Right, the industry is still waiting to make the jump to ATSC 3.0, as it's not been an official push from the FCC.

Hope you like your 720p MPEG2 broadcast feed forever more.

At least until Amazon buys more rights for NFL games. They handle the cameras and commentating for their games, and thus, it's 1080p source and stream.

That is not the fault of the stream providers but a fault of the broadcasters as the content source is 720P.

ATSC 3.0 only impacts OTA TV. I don't think that it will really have much impact on the source material quality, especially since the switch isn't mandatory. I really don't see that there be an increase in video quality until the cable and satellite companies start providing devices that can support 4K (there are a few, but not many) AND there are enough people who have 4K TVs. It is a chicken and the egg problem.

LOL yep. and the commercials on sling were HORRID. same ones over and over and over and over..and over again

switched to hulu live and enjoy it a whole lot more

We tried about all of them. Directv Now first. It was ok at best but had the channels we wanted. We switched to Sling TV when we moved to Roku's for our TVs since the Directv Now interface is burning garbage on Roku. I bought a OTA TiVo for our locals and that worked great for about a year. Then Youtube TV announced that they now have local channels for like 99% of the US. I checked to see if my little podunk backwoods area had local channels and sure enough, they had them all. We switched to Youtube TV and Philo's $16 a month deal and got every channel we could ever want, along with all my sports and local channels. We are on month 3 of it and really like it. The interface for Philo is meh at best but the youtube tv interface is great.
