Edgar Pons wanted to get a radio frequency identification (RFID) chip implanted under his skin so that he can use it to unlock his door at home. He decided to get it done live onstage at the Mobile World Congress. "It is super, for me, very useful, because I have an automatic house," he said, adding he was further motivated by the fact he could "withdraw it very easily, simply making a little cut and pressing it". Alex Rodriguez Vitello, a physicist and engineer at Barcelona-based tech company Alpha, said, "The chip is the size of a grain of sand or two and it's covered in a material that is biocompatible so our body doesn't degrade it over time."

During the presentation at the Mobile World Congress, organized by Spanish bank Sabadell, a man named Pau who had already been fitted with a chip, made a payment by placing his smartphone over the skin covering the chip. "(What) we have been seeing now is what the future of payments could be," said Anna Puigoriol, a financial services manager at Sabadell.

OK. My debit card just touches the reader and we are done. I just carry a couple of cards in my phone case these days. tossed the wallet long ago. I guess a chip in my finger might be slightly faster but not much.

Canada has been like this for a long time.

I loved my time in Toronto. My card never left my sight, and I never gave it over a website or over the phone for ordering foods

I am sure everyone involved in this feels like they are on some cutting edge of evolutionary technology, but this is laughably sad. Sure I could jam a remote in my taint and change channels with some Kegel exercises, but it is really not that much bother to press with a finger. This is fake technology advancement. Like calling a drone a flying car. I swear the world is overrun by children with pubic hair playing "adult".

I was amazed when I ordered food in California during a Work business (And my first visit to you guys :)) that the pizza guy asked for my card numbers over the phone
Holy cow, good thing it was the company card lol, I would of stressed too much with mine.

How do you pay over the phone in Canada?

So if you get hacked now they have access to everything.....seems like a real bad idea until we get some laws and security systems beyond what we already have.

I knew someone that had a chip implanted in his hand several years ago. He used it to unlock his Android phone.
I guess enjoy the cancer later? IDK.

i have a keypad on my dead bolt that unlocks my house.

Frank Sinatra warned us about this 66 years ago.

Can't wait for the day when everyone has these. Then if you tick off the right politician or billionaire they then cut your access off from all of society and you end up homeless on the street.

Along with the food the delivery guy brings a mobile debit/credit machine to you that reads your card; it has the standard protections built in,like providing your pin number and it connects to the chip on your card.

Looks pretty much identical to your standard store checkout debit machine but rather than using landlines or wifi to connect, it uses a mobile connection.

It is the little things that make Canada great, because they distract from the idiocy at the top.

So if your hand just so happens to "fall off" as you are being arrested, does it still count as self incrimination if they use it to unlock all your devices and search your "automatic" house top to bottom? I mean, they obtained it through legal search and seizure measures, even if they were a bit rough in handling the situation...

I'm sure there is some prior case history where a dudes severed thumb was used to "illegally" access incriminating files on a phone.

You know, this is where I draw the line. For now. I mean if i can get an implant that makes me 100x smarter, or have superhuman abilities, then perhaps I'll consider it. But I'm sure as hell not getting tagged like an animal.

Most biometrics need living tissue to work correctly. So in most cases a severed thumb won't work.

I would be a bit uneasy having a chip implant as it can get sore but being so small and the way this is packed together the chances of it happening should be extremely small, surely would be convenient but I still think paying with Google Pay using the phone over NFC is a decent trade-off, the phone is always with me anyway and I don't need to carry any cards or wallet with me.

Exactly this. What is the benefit of this? I might consider a computer brain assist implant, but this is just...

So (true story) about 20 years ago when pet chipping was becoming a defacto part of animal adoption... I told the Mrs that one day people would be chipped like this too for identifcation and geo-location (this was a LONG time before smart phones or even commonplace GPS). She laughed and said it would never happen....

I have the upgraded version this guy is a dipshit:

"honey where are my fing keys!!!"

"in your pocket"

oh yea! then i have these cool things called hands and i unlock the door. works out pretty cool.

The Mark of the Beast will be specific and also during the Tribulation / The Great Tribulation.
This does not differ by much. The bible says in the right hand (palm) or forehead. It must be something that can not be removed faked or undone and you also must know what you are doing. So is this it (i a a christian my self so we will assume for arguments sake the bible is true)? I say no but it could very well be a precursor. People taking these chips are possibly test subjects being used to prove it works before they force every one to take it to buy any thing. Another poster mentioned pissing off a politician and being un able to buy food ending up homeless that ties in perfectly with the bible.

All the pizza places in my hometown (college town in the upper Midwest) have those machines as well, though there is a very good reason why pizza places in much of the US will want people calling in orders to pay ahead of time - in some areas too many people will order pizzas that they don't actually have money for, and then cause a commotion when the delivery driver won't give them the pizza for free/discount, thus the pizza places are going to want to be paid before hand. It all depends on what proportion of your local population is of the sort who does obnoxious stuff like that.

No, this is not it. As for being a precursor, not really, it is just something that can be inserted into someone's body, not that unusual. Also, it is not going to be a mystery what the mark is at that point and the Great Tribulation will not be a guess, it will be a known quantity when it occurs.

That said, do you remember the commercial of the man stuffing his coat pockets with food, just walking out and being scanned and the police officer just walking up to him and handing that man his receipt?

Didn't someone get one of these implanted at a conference a while back? I seem to remember that but a quick google isn't showing anything other than some... "OMG END OF THE WORLD THE MARK OF THE BEAST" videos and how the swedish are like.. "Ya ok sure why not" about having one in their hands for the company they work for.

Imagine if the chips would have a backdoor..... bet the chinese govt would love to be able to literally suck the money out of their ppl. xD Then the doctors are bought so no surgical removal for you and ofc the chips would be put in there so it would be hard to remove it by yourself...

No games for you! -10% to chinese govt. Bought american hardware -20% to govt... Booze is bad for you -5%

Now I shall stop, enough nightmares already

If it's just for payments, why not get a QR code tattooed on your forehead with payment info? Mark of the beast indeed.

everyone in Vancouver uses online payment these days... either through one of the many apps (SkipTheDishes/Just Eat/Door Dash/Foodler/Uber Eats/Foodora) or the stores website... even the one store Indian Pizza place I always order from has online payment system.. tho I have paid in person I guess.

China doesn't need implants what with their social credit score system. Everyone starts out with 1,000 points and you either move up or down the food change. Once you hit zero, no travel, no access to government services. If you want to see the physical incarnation of this, stream the latest episode of The Grand Tour on Amazon (formerly Top Gear). They went to china and filmed what it was like driving on the highways. Hint, cameras take your picture constantly on the roadways. I've never seen anything like it and it's far outside what is implemented in the US for traffic cameras. Speeding? Minus X number of points on your credit score. Changing lanes without using flashers? Deduct from your credit score.
