Hi guys. I helped my friend built his pc and we installed AIO corsair cooling H150i pro. However, we ran cinebench and the temp goes over 100c and I know this is HOT. Idle around 40-42c.

But he's insisting it's ok since cinebench runs 100% load and his reason is he'll never use the CPU 100% load.
I tried convincing him to re-seat the cooling but he said it's fine. My question is, will the cpu be ok? no lock ups so far and seem even stable running at 4.5Ghz 1.26v (adaptive)

my 9800x @ 4.6GHz idles at 90-100F and full load under Intel Burn In Test is 185F with a Corsair H110i Pro.

Cinebench is a benchmark. It doesnt load long enough to be valid for temperature stability.

The temp/power limits on modern CPUs exist to protect against catastrophic (sudden) failure. The CPU will be harmed in the long run though. These chips run really hot. I have a 7960x (de-lidded) running at 4.0GHz and 1.02V that maxes out in the 50C range under full load. That's with low ambients though so I expect that to be closer to 60C in Summer. It's a media server/rendering workstation so it's busy very often. I would not feel comfortable with temps hitting 100C for any length of time on that machine. Your friend can do what he wants but he will burn out his CPU eventually.
 
I dunno what board he has but ive ran into this before.

Make sure the board isnt trying to PWM down the AIO pump and fans. Make sure those are locked at 100%. With how hot these like to run the PWM isnt fast enough to absorb the temperature spike. On a friends 7820x i built it was doing this and causing it to throttle.
 
mobo his using is Maximus VI rampage omega. How do I know if the mobo is not trying to PWM down the AIO pump?
 
You can set the curves in BIOS, go to Q-Fan, select the fan header the AIO is plugged into, set it to Manual, adjust the curve to suit (set to PWM if the fan/pump are PWM capable - I'm not familiar). If there's not enough pump RPM, the pump and fans will spin up like mad when the CB15 load hits and the temp spikes. And see how fast the temps return to idle range when the load comes off. If it lingers for more than a second, it might need re-seating.

But he's got an expensive CPU, an expensive mobo (I'm guessing it's a Rampage VI Extreme Omega) and an AIO cooler? I have the next CPU up, same mobo and have 18 fans, 4 radiators, and two pumps. I can run heavy loads at 4.6Ghz and might see a core hit 80C, never gets anywhere close to that in normal use.
 
Thanks for the detail on how to adjust the fan/pump settings. Yeah, he's got the VI Extreme omega and as of right now, he doesn't want to watercool his rig yet. If he decided to just leave it like that, I hope his CPU will last 5 years because that's how long he wants to keep it. I'm still not comfortable for those temps especially when summer hits, it's going to even more hotter.

It sounds like hes uneducated on this stuff if he keeps telling you that its fine when it isnt. If i were me i would tell him if this has any issues then dont call me since your not listening to me now or tell him since you built it that your gonna make sure its right. I would think someone with this much money into a system(looks like a 700 dollar board, and a 1400 dollar CPU) that the person would be care a little more?

He's still new to building PC, but he's just eager to complete his super computer, but I told him, I've re-seated my cooler a few times until i'm satisfied with the temp of my CPU, but I guess he doesn't have that patience and I just hope that CPU would last under his care. according to intel tjmax is 88c on that chip. Im sure his board like mine has a setting that will offset the tjmax value since hes hitting 100c.
 
What is the use case of that PC? Video editing or something CPU intensive? May not necessarily be about how long the CPU lasts but overall system stability. Have him read this thread..
 
I think his reason to have that CPU is future proof. Accoring to him and I think he does a little of video edting but not too often. I remember using an application for CPU stability, was it ada64, or was that for RAM test stability?

Hes gonna future proof himself right into a new system it sounds like. The second he renders video the cpu will ride 22c over its intended spec. To test for CPU stability use Intel BIT, Prime95, Cinebench, and timespy. Weirdly the last 2 are benchmarks but Kingpin said those last 2 showed stability issues before the first two because of the rapid ramp up in power usage.
 
Thanks GM. Ahh.. The good ol' Prime95. That was what I used to check my CPU stability. Ran it for hours and if no errors, it's good to go. I'm gonna try to convince him to re-seat the AIO and hopefully he agrees.
 
How did this pan out?

Also for his chip he should be using Cinebench extreme. The higher core count chips burn though regular cinebench to quick to get a good load. This one is made for HEDT chips
