What's new in the Ultrawide monitor world?

I've been using dual 27" monitors, a Dell S2716DG 1440p 144hz for gaming and Acer K272HUL 1440p 60hz for web etc for quite awhile now. Entertaining the idea of dumping the dual setup and going with an ultrawide curved monitor for simplicity and get rid of the split screens.

I've never had anything bigger then 27" so not sure how 1080 vs 1440p looks at 30"+ but i am a fan of the 1440 resolution. With the nvidia driver changes i guess G Sync isn't 100% a deciding factor now?

I will say i never game full screen, i'm always windowed and looked into LG screen split and displayfusion type software, that is a huge feature that is drawing me to an ultrawide. I like the idea of having my game say split to 2/3 of the screen with a browser on the side, or in the middle with chat and browser on each side, something along those lines.

So, any suggestions on which models to look at?

i7-7700k with a 1080TI.

lol i actually just watched a video about that yesterday. I'd definitely have to see that in person before i could make a purchase like that.

It's just two 27" 16:9 monitors without a bezel.

Specifically, it's a defective 65" 4k panel where something was really fucked up about the top or bottom of it, so they cut it in half and rebranded it as a "super ultrawide" to salvage their broken trash.

I'm just not sure what the 1080p would look like coming from 2 1440p monitors.

Shorter. Even if it is wider your vertical screen real estate would be reduced. So if you played a game 16x9 aspect ratio you would just be rendering less and 1920x1080. There is a 1440 super ultrawide in the works though, but it won't be cheap. I think it is literally 5120x1440 which is two 27s like you have now side by side, just as one monitor.

Do you have a source for that? What I've seen of LCD panels, I cant see how you can cut one in half without destroying it.

Dell has a 1440p super wide for sale, but it's only 60Hz... and $1500.

It would be half a 55" but they developed these panels for this purpose.

I really doubt it. I know this industry. Everything is cheap, bottom of the barrel trash. Bet it's reused defective larger panels.

Do they have a TV panel that does 144hz?

Also, which TV did they use to harvest their 44" 3840x1200 and 49" 5120x1440 panels?

FWIW literally every decent 4k TV panel can natively refresh @ 120hz. Not a big leap to 144 from there. The problem is while their internal parts might talk to it at this refresh (and it is used for some gimmicks like post processing or clear motion or "240/480hz" whatever they make up names for) exactly none of the inputs are configured to. HDMI 2.1 might change this if they don't fuck it all up, which they likely will.

Back in monitor land, LG is releasing a 24:10 ~38" sometime this year. So far only a 175hz 38gl950g model announced (DP 1.4 required which means v2 gshit module, so +$400 BOM) but hopefully recent events have convinced them to stop bending over buying FPGAs from an ASIC company and they will release a sane freesync version.

3840x1600 works out to be a nice balanced resolution IMO. You can find this same scale on the Dell pro/business model u3818dw, pretty much perfect for side-by-side work and those also let you do dual input for a pair of 1920x1600 (6:5) desktops. For home/games we only care about unsmeared hertz and panel quality though.

I'm just sitting here, plugging away on my x34 I got four years ago..
Really has not been a reason to upgrade in that time in regards to ultrawides...

Also plugging away on an X34 and happy with it. But also anxiously awaiting the unicorn that is the X35.

I'd also love to own one of the new super-ultrawide 49" offerings for work. But they are $$$

Unless they somehow fuck it up (and they will), the upcoming LG 38GL950G looks like it ticks every box.

☑ 37.5″ in size

☑ 3840 x 1600 resolution

☑ Variable refresh

☑ 144Hz refresh rate with 175hz overclock

☑ IPS panel

☑ DisplayHDR 600

I would not buy an ultrawide right now knowing that thing's coming.

WOW that might be my upgrade. I'm still rocking my Omen 32inch. Maybe not though, it'll probably cost 1500 bucks or more.

Wow that monitor is exactly what I need. It is just the few things I would want over this monoprice 35" 100hz 3440x1440 screen. I end up having just barely less real estate than I need for single monitor and a slightly higher refresh rate would be nice. I don't game much but I find my eye fatigue goes away with high refresh.

So looks like I can get a Dell AW3418DW right now for $750. Anything better out there specs and price wise? Gsync, 1440p and 120hz ticks pretty much all the boxes. Is there anything new coming out or any reason to not pull the trigger on this now?

LG 34GK950F is on sale for $799. Sold out at most places now but I think B&H is still accepting backorders.

It is 3440x1440p and 144 Hz. FreeSync monitor but since Nvidia added the G-Sync compatibility mode it works just like a G-Sync monitor would.

It has some other advantages over the Alienware... the 144 Hz is native and not an overclock, so you're guaranteed to hit it. Also supports HDMI 2.0 and comes factory calibrated with an sRGB preset if you need accurate colors. It is HDR capable as well although at only 400 nits I wouldn't say it's much of a selling point (proper HDR really needs 1000 nits), still nice to have though.

TFTcentral has a good review up: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/lg_34gk950f.htm

Is this the same height as a 32 inch monitor? After looking at the 34 inch ultrawide monitors, I don't think i'd want to give up the height of my 32 inch 16:9.

The height of a 34 inch ultrawide is the same of a 27 inch monitor. Nothing ultrawide exists at the height of a 32 inch right now that I know of. I believe the 38 inch ultrawides are the height of a 30 inch.

Dam I wasn't even looking at that monitor and now after googling gsync results for it I think I may just pull the trigger. Wasn't excited about the higher price but eBay has a 10% back on eBay bucks today. $80 back is soundijg like it's worth it.

Hmm I'm still torn now, tax charged through eBay for the LG, no tax on the Dell. Comes out to about $100 more for LG. Is 144hz worth that vs 120 and native gsync?

From what I've read of Nvidias freesync "gsync" support, you are better off having the 144 Hz model. That and a new firmware supposedly makes the response time amazing.

For $100 extra... I would get the LG for sure. It will have better out of the box picture as well per the TFTcentral review. You could always calibrate the Alienware but that's an added expense if you don't already have a calibration device.

I'm really leaning toward it, just having a hard time pulling the trigger. I've never had an LG monitor and a little worried on the 1 year warranty vs Dell 3 year advanced replacement.

Good point on the warranty. I know my Chase card adds another year on top ( I always use it for big electronics purchases ). I feel comfortable with 2 years, though Dell's warranty really can't be beat, having used it in the past.

That's acceptable, 30 vs 32, it's not 2 inches off my cock .

Thanks everyone for the input. Think i've settled on the LG 34GK950F. I see you can pick up a squaretrade 4 year warranty for an extra $12 on amazon and with 5% cash back with my Amazon card will come in around $760. Any expected online deals anywhere before i pull the trigger?

I did the same this morning, as posted in Fisker's thread. Can't wait to get mine. I would pull the trigger. $799 is a great deal, IMO.

Awesome, speaking of great deals. I was looking into some cash back programs like ebates etc, does anyone know if anyone of them actually work for computer monitor/accessories? Looks like the fine print on most of them is those items are excluded?

LG 34GK950F hmm.. would it be dumb to upgrade to that from the alienware 34" ultra wide 120hz monitor that's a year old?

I actually just bought a samsung 55" 4k NU8000 and swapped out the alienware ultrawide.. is nice for 1440 at 120hz. But seems a tad too large at 4' away. And a little too high on the desk. But the low 9ms imput kat is nice.. and the hdr.

Up until this week I was only using a 48" Samsung 4K HDR 8-series display as my main monitor on my desktop. It was great for HDR and content/text work, and the clarity couldn't be beat, but I just got the Alienware 34" 3440x1440p ultrawide with G-Sync, and game performance is way better. Gaming at 120Hz is a great experience compared to the 60Hz locked TV, but colors, and productivity work aren't quite as good. I'll probably end up having a dual setup of the two. When I'm not gaming, I really miss the 48" 4K.

The 38" 3840x1600 monitor is 110 DPI which is 14.4" tall, 30" 2560x1600 monitors are 100 DPI and 16" tall.

Yeah it's a tuff call for me. I'll be hooking up the alienware tonight to see if I like gaming better on it over the 55".. kinda miss the ultra wide screen. But love the size of the 55" haha

Wish the ultra wide was much taller. Need to stack 2 or 3 of them of them! Lol
