Disney Removes Advertising from YouTube in Response to Child Exploitation Videos

The Walt Disney Company, Epic Games, Nestle SA and other corporations have removed their advertising from YouTube in response to a video that detailed how criminals are using the YouTube comments section to run a "soft-core pedophilia ring." Video blogger Matt Watson showed evidence of how these pedophiles are encouraging children to do challenges and upload them. When the videos are uploaded by the child, the criminals upload a copy on their own channel(s). There they create timestamps to the parts that show the children in compromising positions. Also they bombard the comments section with links to pedophilia on other websites and hidden videos.

The worst part is that pedophiles are using YouTube's algorithm to find the videos. For example, by searching for bikinis and then clicking on a video of a child, the algorithm "locks" the user into these videos in the recommended section. By interacting with the pedophiles in the comment section, the algorithm shows more disturbing content. Matt Watson calls it a wormhole. YouTube knows this activity is happening, but only disables the comment section of the videos. According to Matt Watson, Youtube doesn't remove the offensive videos or accounts that uploaded them. After the uproar happened, YouTube is now removing the content shown in the blogger's video. But what of the countless others out there? The link to the video from Matt Watson is NSFW and can be found in the Bloomberg article.

"Any content --including comments -- that endangers minors is abhorrent and we have clear policies prohibiting this on YouTube. We took immediate action by deleting accounts and channels, reporting illegal activity to authorities and disabling violative comments," a spokeswoman for YouTube said in an email.

"Instead of fixing our system of broken or biased algorithms and curating things using proper human judgement, we're just going to ban ANYTHING that MAY OR MAY NOT make the very, VERY fragile advertisers queezy"

Then this happens because, what do you know, child sex rings don't care about advertising revenue.

The video from Matt Watson details what is happening, but I didn't want to post that on the front page. I do recommend watching it, but of course it is NSFW. I did feel as if what I posted needs to spread so Google can be pressured into getting their stuff together. The video is in the Bloomberg article.

YouTube has been a disgusting cesspit of child perversion (remember the Elsa/Spider-Man videos that featured sexualized behavior targeted towards young children?) for a long time. Google seems incapable of accountability across many of its platforms.

Sometimes I do feel kinda sorry for corporates like Google and the relentless torrent of filth and complaints they have to deal with. Commanding the tide to stop, really.

Then I remember the last half dozen kneejerk demonetisations and copyright strikes, and I stop feeling pity for them.

Those were the worst.... Eventually they made youtube kids that seemed to fix that particular issue for me. But there isn't (or wasn't) a desktop browser version of youtube kids.

I don't buy that marilaque one bit. I don't think pedophiles use YouTube comments as a method to gather and talk about their favorite disturbing hobby. Pretty sure this is Disney flexing their muscle to push YouTube to basically shut down the comments section when their movies are terrible and remove more advertising unfriendly videos. This is the problem with YouTube trying to appease advertisers and users, and technically their real customers are advertisers.

Seems like, at the very least, once a week we hear about something new Youtube fucked up. They seriously need to rework all of their algorithms because none of them are obviously working even 10% as well as they should be.

Well, it's Google. All of their products are in Beta status until they close them down so....

What are you talking about? Disney isn't demanding the YT remove comments, that is YT's "solution" to this problem. Disney, among others, are pulling ads in response to it. Pulling ads is common when companies believing having their name associated with a brand will give them bad PR and potentially hurt sales.

This is a huge deal. YouTube was never profitable anyway, and these are some of the biggest advertisers. I can't imagine Google shuttering YT given how big a part it is of society now, but at the same time they can't keep operating it at a loss. My guess is it's going to go from restrictive to insanely restrictive. Basically taking the "you" out of YouTube and full-on becoming another traditional network channel—which would be the same as shuttering it in the long run.

Did you even watch the guy's video? It literally shows all of the comments by these scumbags, linking to timestamps in videos, linking to other videos, disgusting comments.

So, it doesn't matter that you don't think it is happening, it is. Not everything is a conspiracy.

The problem I see is there is no real support from google, apple, and the like. Sure, there is a report button, but there is no follow up, there is no responsibility, nobody is handling these things until a video like this goes viral.

Just make YouTube 18+ and be done with the problem by removing any videos by people under 18. These companies with ads on YouTube are largely marketing to adults anyway so who cares if YT loses its child audience?

They can't even prevent kids under the current 14-16 (depending on country) age limit from uploading videos, no way they are going to be able prevent people under 18 from doing so.

just have a seat over there google.

All this perversion and sexual deviance is allowed and even promoted toward children online.

Yet mysteriously, these tech giants are quite efficient at censoring legal speech content they deem to be fascist, racist, sexist, and above all anti-Semitic.

They're a lot less efficient at that then you'd think. Its all based on mass reporting and algorithms. Youtube is VERY bad at replying to anything unless they're forced to do so.

This gives me a headache.

I'm going to say something dangerous - I'm not going to blame Google or YouTube. I blame the pedophiles who are doing this. YouTube has done too much to enrich my life, whether it's a repository for dumb stuff I find interesting, information videos that show me how to do things, or just a place where the average person can post videos about something from their life (I almost died when I watched some guy's homemade device for throwing squirrels into a pond - literally, almost died, I laughed so hard I sucked some food into my lungs).

I remember a time when there was no internet and no YouTube. If I wanted to learn how to fix a car or make a wood cabinet or crochet or build a barn or whatever, I had to find someone to teach me or hope that my library had a book that gave me some of that information. With YouTube and the internet I have the confidence to try things I would never have tried.

I do not see a direct problem with the original videos the pedophiles are linking too, so I can't justify telling Google that YouTube is the problem. Monetized or not, profitable or not, I appreciate YouTube as a service and I feel that Google deserves support, not condemnation, from the community. Google should be able to reach out to the community, the government and maybe even law enforcement to find the solution that everyone can live with.

It seems obvious to me. There's a problem, yes, but it starts and ends with that pedo that made those links. Let's discuss it with him.

Google could do something about this. Hire real humans instead of relying on thier algorithms.
I don't see how that'd work. If you take out the comments, these are innocuous/innocent videos of kids do things kids do. And yes, pedos are going to watch these and get off, but trying to stop that is akin to stopping objectophiliacs from getting off on unboxing videos (or videos about cameras or clocks...whatever it is that they love).

And that aside, there are a ton of videos uploaded daily. How can people manually police each upload. And honestly, if they'd had this in place and I was on staff, there's no way I would have thought these videos (sans comments) are sexual in nature (because they aren't to normal people).

Maybe the FBI and interpol should be the monitors. They'd be able to track these pedos down and arrest their asses.

Very hypicritcal from the Disney Masonic 33 club, no surprise kitten/MK programming is not explotation.

Be interesting to see how Youtube or anyone else for that matter can tell the difference between a soft porn "challenge" video of a young girl doing gymnastics in front of a mirror and a video of the next want to be Olympic gymnast practicing her moves in front of a mirror. Or are young female gymnast now banned from Youtube because someone might get some weird sexual satisfaction from watching them? What's next, banning videos of kids swimming because they are mostly naked?

The bloomberg video? He mentions it but doesn't show comments. Even still YouTube comments aren't exactly filled with mature people. You're going to have shitty posts in every video, pointing out the most absurd shit. That is the nature of the internet.

So you think YouTube won't turn their algorithm to SJW mode and basically take down all controversial videos that show anything slightly lewd? YouTube isn't going to hire people to look at this on a case by case with actual people. The algorithm is going to carpet bomb everything that is triggered to get advertisers back on. That's why Disney wants. If a negative review of a Disney movie gets take down, so much the better for Disney.

How about you watch the bloody video Bloomberg linked to in the article? Then you can resume gluing a tinfoil hat to your head.

corp ad money and 'open' video hosting dont mix.

expect more calls for moderation (either silently or openly) on other matters after this, as per calls before this.

better save whatever interesting vids you have came across on your hard drive. I;ve already have some old military experiment vids go poof on youtube,

youtube aims to go fully corporate anyways.

So much for vblogging and user content. ( of which the type of moderation the type of suits are looking at will pretty much eliminate)

This is opening up a whole new sector to Chinese apps to take over.

I watched the video of Matt Watson and this person is just sick. He finds little girls sexy when they are not doing anything sexual, just doing normal child stuff. He creates a problem out of nothing. This isn't child porn, there isn't a "soft-core pedophilia ring", there isn't anything even remotely sexual in those videos.
The problem, if there is a problem at all, is people. People will find anything sexy. Someone might find your 90 yo grandma sexy. But hey, the obvious solution is to just delete any video that features a minor, even if it appears for 1 second in the background.

Unfortunately, YouTube and Google are too busy being concerned about deplatforming politically right-leaning channels to be bothered with child pornography...

Since the videos in question can easily be self made and completely nonsexual, the only thing you can do is get rid of comments.

Pretty sure the internet figured out that comments do little more than allow to worst the internet has to offer to ruin everything good. Not sure how long youtube can hold out. I won't feel bad when it gets rid of them vs all the trouble of moderating. What are you really losing?

What do you lose? A huge sense of community, which is what prompts most people to share videos. Lack of feedback will cause disinterest and movement to other platforms.

The ability to provide feedback. The ability to engage with a community. Yes that means bad people get to comment as well. But is the solution really throwing out the baby with the bathwater? I don't think youtube would be as popular as it is if it didn't allow viewers to connect with uploaders.

I agree, I've never seen this supposed phenomenon. And as someone who used to record and often upload gymnastics videos, I'm sure I should've seen it at least once.

They are moving towards curtailing your ability to offer negative feedback to their biased propaganda videos. If anything would be exploitative is if they used this alleged case to shut down comments on big corporate propaganda videos like the gilette ad.

I think we might be moving to direct pay for videos, no ads... It might be better that way.. not sure I would pay though.
Contents will always be curated as best as able of course, comments and videos... This whole thing does get complicated quick.

Unfortunately, YouTube and Google are too busy being concerned about deplatforming politically right-leaning channels to be bothered with child pornography...

It’s not child pornography. The videos are regular YouTube content but made creepy by sick commenters. Sorry to bring reality to your political delusions.

Taking down the content would be the equivalent of banning department store magazines or something because weirdos jerk off to them.

A child wearing swimwear is now considered "disturbing content"? So if I go to any beach I'm a child rapist now? WTF?

The overreaction to this is gonna be ugly. The solution is to make the algorithm ban the commenters for posting suggestive comments on videos of minors. Also, exclude videos of minors to VPN traffic or disallow posts on videos of minors from known VPN services.

disney is the last one to be complaining about child safety and softcore..
pot calling kettle black... my bad is that quote now too pc?

i watch over everything my daughter looks at on her tablet, if i see some shady looking foreign russian family doing weird shit with toys or outfits i tell her to change videos and she does.
if i see something odd period, i change the video or tell her to go practice her drawing or numbers/letters.

its all about parent responsibility. alot of parents are just letting their kids be baby sat by youtube and its easy, EVEN in KIDS YOUTUBE, for them to stray off to some weird drugged out foreign family thats exploiting their kids for money and no telling what else.
monitor what your kids do plain and simple. limit them from using the tablet or computer.
