Metro: Exodus

People say they want competition, in reality they like the idea of competition but nobody wants to leave Steam because their existing libraries, friend lists, etc, are all there. Nothing will EVER be good enough.

The only one that gets a pass from the raging horde is GOG because it's drm free.

Why not release the game on both storefronts? Epic / Steam or GOG? All that does is further our suspicion that A. Epic made this deal to undermine Steam or B. That they made the deal to prop up their storefront with cutthroat tactics. Both are bad for consumers and bad for the community as a whole.

Which tells me that they are only concerned about making money, and don't really give a flip about what the customer & fans of the series think or their feelings on the matter. So in that regard, F@ck em.

dude, what hole have you been living in? every goddam thing the entire gaming industry does is for the specific purpose of milking the consumer for as much money as many different ways as possible.
There is nothing new to see here.

Look at all the loot box drama, the after launch introduction of microtransactions, done specifically so that early reviews are not tainted with the drama.

Look at the goddamn games for which you need a chart to see what version you are getting, what stuff it has and when you get to play it. In addition to DLC, season passes you ALSO get microtransactions.

The bullshit about microtransactions is that you can also "earn" the same stuff ingame. But when a game contains them they dramatically increase the grind factor to push you to spend.

And then you have all the broken ass games, stuff broken in the demos, to be "fixed" at launch but it never is, until much much later.

Exodus does not have any of this crap. The franchise owner made a decision of what storefront to use and the developers are the ones getting the shit.
There is a lot to hate in the gaming industry but exodus is not one of those things.

Yeah, but don't pull something that ea would do. Okay, let's have pre-orders up over here and then two weeks before the game comes out, pull it and have it only exclusively over here. I'm sorry but that's just a dick move any way you look at it. I'm not saying anything bad about the game or devs, it's the greedy sob's up top that are to blame and it's unfortunate. I'll just wait until it comes out on steam and on sale as I have PLENTY of backlog to play through and might be finished with Witcher 3 by then. :D

if they had announced this as an Epic Store exclusive from the beginning it would not have changed a thing...people still would have whined and cried...too many people have some weird, unhealthy obsession with Steam

For some reason I get a lot of black screens randomly in GD and it really works my RX 580 hard.
Eventually it just freezes up and I have to hard reboot.

Up to 160w easily according to wattman.
Stock or OC no diff.
Tried starting the game in DX9 as suggested online and no diff.

Shame because I love the genre.

I don't have this issue with D3 or PoE. Maxed out in 4k.

Maybe people just don't want a bunch of launchers and would prefer to have one for all their games.

I wouldn't mind. But it's not a big deal as I don't have any games that need the Epic launcher and don't see any in my near future either.

why is installing multiple launchers such a big deal?...before Steam people would have tons of games installed and nowadays people have tons of software installed...having one more means absolutely nothing in the long run...I have most of my games on Steam and sure would prefer to have all my games on it for convenience but it's not a big deal to install others...I have GOG Galaxy with only 1 game installed on it- Witcher 3...Origin and Uplay I have around 10 on each...Epic launcher I recently installed when they were giving away what Remains of Edith Finch for free...finished the game and never opened the launcher again

no biggie...I'll use Epic launcher again for Metro Exodus...people act like it's some major inconvenience to use it and then forget it...I would hope most people are savvy enough to turn off the option to 'Run when Windows starts'...such a small issue to play a potentially really good game...What Remains of Edith Finch was an excellent game and well worth installing Epic

For me it's the fact it was on steam then pulled a few weeks before releasing because epic paid them to do it. It sets a bad precedent when you can pull a game form steam right before releasing it. Also it's 2019 doesn't make sense to limit yourself to one store, sell it everywhere and have as big as customer base as you can. Hopefully they fail and lose a crap load of money off this game.

Sucks. I like having just my one place for games. The only other is the Blizzard one for Diablo 3. It would be nice to have 1 for them all.

See gaints like EA, blizzard ect I can see having thier own launchers and stores. But for everyone else it makes no sense to me.

You might get your wish if you convince Valve to drop their cut to ~15% like the other stores. Until then the free-for-all will continue to happen.

30% is not bad when you think about it. Also it has to be way cheaper then the old boxed CDs at stores so steam probably could lower it a bit. But for that 30% you get free advertisement on the biggest store so you can save a craploacr on advertisement

From an exposure and marketing point of view 30% aint bad.

Also, If youre an independent studio with little or no money at all to start marketing your game Steam is the way to go.

This is my point. If it was never on Steam to begin with, there would be no story here. But the fact that they had it out for pre-order then pulled it is bullshit. Just a big "FUCK YOU" to gamers. And once more, I am talking about the "big wigs" who only care that Epic paid them to make it exclusive with their launcher.

Pretty sure the plan to dump steam before launch was there for a while before it became public.

And the deal with Epic was in place for just as long.

If that comes out to be true, then that just makes it worse and then I really stand firm in the "kiss my fucking ass" group.

But why though? 99% of the games on Steam aren't made by Valve. Both Valve and Epic are primarily platform/technology sellers but also game developers. Both started focusing on games way back in the 90s, but Epic has primarily been a game engine company for at least two decades. Valve has been focusing on Steam rather than games over the past ~12 years. In this regard they're pretty similar.

If this was Discord, who doesn't do any games themselves, I'd understand.

How is it a big "fuck you" to gamers? You get a $10 discount but you have to use another launcher. That's a win for the vast majority of people.

It's a big "fuck you" to Steam because they used them for advertising and then ditched.

The preorder got exodus exposure but everyone that purchased the preorder is going to get it from steam. NEW SALES were canceled. Existing sales, valve is getting their cut, gamers are getting their game. The preorder was one of the most popular for sales that week based on the day it was cancelled.

So then it becomes "I'm not a fan of preorder games so I never preorder" which goes to "goddamnit they cancelled their preorder"

Steam needs to do more. Big games sure they can do whatever they want to and be fine. Small games get lost on the platform. Never meet sales targets and pay the heftiest cut.

Because if they knew beforehand that they were going to remove it from Steam, that's just bad business. Let's just dangle a carrot in front of the rabbit and then make the carrot only available in the pet store and not in the wild. And as far as polonyc2 saying what's the big deal about installing another launcher, well I personally don't want another launcher installed if I don't have to have it. I'd rather go back to physical media to be honest. And I as a consumer and a brain, don't have to follow the sheeple. I will vote with my wallet.

That's a minor incontinence at the most. And you save $10. I think the sheeple here are the ones joining the outrage culture.

I hope you meant "inconvenience. And no, the sheeple are the ones that flock toward the product without regarding the actions/consequences. And by all means, go right ahead and give in to them by thinking "it's just another launcher". It's the same thing for Disney when they launch their streaming service and no other Marvel movie will be on Netflix. I won't be subscribing to Disney because fuck them. Greed is the root to all evil.

lmao spell check definitely got me. But you don't have to pay a monthly fee to use a launcher. Complaints like that are exactly why I think those are the sheeple following the outrage flock.

I'm just saying that if it was known beforehand that they were going to go Epic exclusive but still list pre-order on Steam, that's just some shady bullshit right there.

If love a game then why would I want to support steam more than the game developers? Steam does not produce games any more, they just distribute them. Why should I have loyalty to a distribution platform?

Again, I am saying that if they knew beforehand that they were going to go this course...fuck them. And me as a consumer and as a person who does not want another fucking program to start just to play a game, can feel like and vote with my wallet how I like. By all means, I am not telling you that you should not install all the launchers you want to install to support the devs. But it's just my two cents and all it is, but this is my line in the sand. I'll just go back to consoles if this is the future of PC gaming.

In Steams defense, Epic really doesn't make games either, unless you count that Fortnite garbage that is basically just an advertising cash machine.

Because it's not platform loyalty at the core of the backlash. It's people perceiving Epic's business practices as shady and anti-competitive, in this case paying a publisher to stop selling the game on Steam right before its launch.

Had they announced Epic exclusivity when the game was first announced, there wouldn't be a tenth of the complaints. They should have either left it on both stores and let them compete on price (consumers win), or waited for the next Metro game to try an exclusivity thing. But Epic knows their Fortnite golden goose could die any moment so they're trying to buy userbase and relevance overnight. Not gonna happen.

Well, yeah, apex may kill fortnight no doubt about that. but the same question remains, if they make a smart business move that benefits the property owners and the actual consumers, then why is that a bad thing? it is smart on them. maybe gaben will rewrite their contracts. Or maybe they will reduce their percentages. Or maybe they will do nothing. But I expect epic to continue to poach IPs where possible.

Not to long to wait now. So very pumped for this game. I think this will be my most anticipated game of 2019.
I'm eagerly awaiting it too, it looks like a fusion of Metro and STALKER, which would be a dream come true for me.
This year in general looks like it'll be chock full of great games. It's only February and there's already RE2, AC7 and Battlefleet Gothic 2, with Metro launching this week and Sekiro + Sinking City in March. Compared to last year it's an insane number of great titles.

So Steam thrived because Steam offered services to both the end user and the publisher that made sense to both. Mostly it was the publisher, the end users were drug along until they had enough titles in their libraries that they finally had to admit that their were benefits to the service.

But today, with AWS and others offering Infrastructure and Software as a service, it's a lot cheaper to run your own shit again. You aren't stuck with a bunch of hardware, you only need a couple of IT guys to manage your stuff for hosting your launcher, updates, and DLC. When such services become cheaper somewhere else, and you are able to cut ties with Steam who may try and put some stipulations on your company for their hosting, I can see why publishers are looking to cut Steam and others out of the loop.

They do it because it can be profitable, not because they are evil bastards.

That is not quite it. True, the hosting costs have dropped to nothing, however steam does provide a valuable service in terms of marketing to their huge customer base. If a company feels they can get by without needing this marketing then more power to them. Exodus did get a lot of exposure and preorders on steam and that is the crux of the issue. Probably going forward you will see the steam logos on marketing materials replaced with a PC logo like they used to be.

but Steam has honored all those pre-orders so it really shouldn't be this big of a deal

What's not quite true?

Hosting is a service, advertising is a service?

Or were you replying to someone else? Without a quote it's harder to tell.

You're making the assumption that this was known and fully decided on months ago and using that assumption to base your entire opinion of the situation on. Its a pretty weak assumption. Deals like this really can happen practically overnight. If the deal was finalized months ago there is no way Epic wouldn't have announced it during the Game Awards when they were announcing other Epic Store games. That means the deal was made sometime after December 6th. I wouldn't be at all surprised if this was made and finalized, at most, days before the announcement. There is really no reason for them to hold off the announcement and announcing further away from release avoids controversy like this.

Epic and Deep Silver are both assholes for the timing, there really is no denying that, but you can't base your anger off of a baseless assumption.

I really hope this Epic thing is not going to be the main talking point for another year until Steam gets the game again...reviews are up tomorrow so hopefully when people see the 9's and 10's across the board they will start to forget about the publisher and give props to the developer for creating another 'epic' Metro game (get it?...epic?)

They took advantage of Steam. Free exposure. Simple as that.

Eh, no one gets game news on Steam. All games get info, trailers, a website and media blitz before a Steam page. Or the Steam page comes during the initial media blitz but has nothing more than a "TBA" and title. I new about this game well before it went up for sale on Steam.

I hope the game ends up being good. It looks like it has a ton of potential. I like how they're going for a bit of semi-open world but still trying to maintain the limited ammo and resources idea from previous games. I'm really looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
