EA "Respawns": Company Up 16% as Apex Legends Reverses Entire Loss

EA has no idea how to nurture a franchise and do well by it even in rough times. There's a reason WoW still exists. Can you imagine EA execs changing decades of established procedures to milk game franchises until they are bled dry to instead play a long and frankly more dangerous game of banking on a game having long term staying power?

Let's put it this way, I'll believe it when I see it.

EA isn't capable of curating the Counter Strike community. They aren't capable of handling DOTA2, LoL, or even PUBG.

I'm trying to imagine EA engaging with the rabid and sometimes angry player base of a game like PUBG and actually TRYING to make it work. But it's like trying to imagine an impossible alternative universe.

Like... Disney ever doing anything right with the Star Wars franchise. They just aren't the right group to understand how to manage it.

Just wait for the "pay-to-win" loot boxes to arrive.

Game is good right now though. I just know EA is going to eff it all up, because greed.

you still have plenty of subtile movements that makes your character agile, dash+crouch then jump increase leap and speed, jump to a ledge and let go of forward and your char will hang at the ledge to sneak a peak, hold jump on a wall and you will climb a bit more, it's quite good actualy
The movement is definitely on the better side which I expected from Respawn, and it being made on a heavily modded source engine really helps this game in a lot of ways. This game would have felt like shit on something like UE4.

Last night we found out about the peaking system randomly, so we were right next to each other peaking and were having laughs about it as it looks ridiculous with 3 guys.
Game is just a blast.. The zipwire taken from Titanfall really works well in this game.. Being only 3 squads left in the round we decided to zip back and forth (jump/release and turn) to get them out of their hiding spots.
The newest thing we got going is when there is only 1 team left and we take 2 players out from the last team, we rush in and take the last guy out with flying kicks.. Game is just hilarious and well executed.

Doubt that will happen.. So many people are buying skins/banners and lootboxes. Personally I don't buy stuff like that, but that game is a money machine right now and with more content/skins it will just generate more money.

Execs changing years of established procedures to milk what remains of a franchise till its player-base if bled dry?

That's exactly what happened to World of Warcraft. No really, it is. Changing of raid sizes for the first couple expansions, adding a multi-realm LFG tool, including multiple difficulties of raids, creating dynamic dungeons instead of them being 5-man needing a tank, healer, and 2-3 DPS, attempting homogenize the skill trees across the classes, trying to turn the game into pokemon at one point, having an expansion so boring optimal play meant not leaving your house in-game, having to continually make the story more and more over the top to the point where you stop a god from cutting the world in half with a sword so they have to go back to basics, they quit releasing active sub counts ages ago but recent mistakes on their part seem to reveal it may be well under 2 million now, the developer having to re-structure because the billions of dollars of money being printed by WoW are obviously no longer rolling in like they used to, etc.

And that's just WoW. They completely shit the bed with diablo 3 and then had the nerve to announce nothing but a mobile game at their convention, SC2 was the only major RTS left but took 5 years to get the last expansion and due to constant balance changes in trying to keep it "fresh" with a changing meta the esports scene for it massively shrank(which is funny because it was basically SC1 in Korea that helped start pro team e-sports), the warcraft franchise as an RTS is all but dead, HotS had already been waning in popularity with a light e-sports scene propping it up that apparently wasn't making much money, hearthstone is likely so cheap to operate that it doesn't matter, and the only real success Blizzard has had since the launch of SC2(and the expansions really didn't do as well as the first) in 2010, was overwatch and that's almost 3 years old.

Yes, if you take off the nostalgia glasses, Blizzard has been that company with execs changing shit to try and milk their existing franchises and with 1 exception has basically been failing for almost a decade.

My daughter used to play Fort Nite a lot - she hasn't been playing any games lately. She downloaded this game yesterday and said it was ok. I'll have to check back with her - she is in middle school. That age group is totally into Fort Nite right now (at least where I live).
I was listening to Jim Cramer (Mad Money guy) last week - he was all over EA's horrible quarter and talking how bad they were doing. The stock dropped like a rock. I like to watch stocks when bad things happen - sometimes its a buying opportunity, other times its just for my amusement. A day or two after the announcement, I saw that their stock jumped by double digits. Now and I know why - the investors are counting on this game being the next Fort Nite. Time will tell. (And I'm not buying EA stock - I don't like the company and don't like its leadership team)

I almost think Kramer is stock manipulating with his show.

Battle Royale? In my day we called it Death Match

Well, it's deathmatch but with 15 minutes of trying to get a weapon first and maybe just getting ganked right off the bat before you get to have fun.

Only 15 mins if you land away from everyone else on the map and give yourself time to loot weapons before engaging.

If you do an air ship drop or where everyone else is going you will be dead in the first 2 mins.

Sshh, they think they are being novel. The irony is Fortnite is the successful BR game from Epic which did UnrealTournament
A lot of the success to Fortnite is that it's a free game. Remember back in the day where everyone had Quake and therefore everyone had Quake mods like Team Fortress? Then Half Life came out and was the shit, and of course everyone made mods to that cause it's just a modified Quake engine. From Half Life we got gems like Counter Strike, Natural Selection, and etc. But gone are the days where modding a game was easy and freely done, and of course Valve bought them all and had them make games for a price.

Fortnite is today's Counter Strike, which is odd when you consider that Counter Strike GO is now free after being out for such a long time. Also it may have to do with Fortnite as well. Basically people don't want to pay for shit to play.

Hey look, 10 million people downloaded a free game ! Now EA's worth twice as much! - The stock market.

As not a fan of battle royale. This game definitely kept me interested enough to play all night long.

...I haven't touched it since. The action is a bit too slow for my taste and being beaten by people with 400+ kills. Eh.. I'm okay with not playing :p

I would like to play a BR game of Borderlands, where everyone plays a version of Claptrap.

You know, the internet is made of scuttlebutt, bullshit and fuddle-duddle. This is an era when advertising could be cheaper and smarter than ever yet still we see games where over half of the budget is spent on not the game.
You know, they tell us how much is spent on "marketing" but they don't tell us *how* it's spent. I wouldn't be surprised to find an executive marketing team pulling in the lion's share of that budget while only a fraction gets used for direct marketing efforts.

Not that I could tell. I'd queue up with some friends with very low kills (I have three so far). We'd get offed by people with over 400 kills pretty quickly. The audio in the game was spot on. I'd probably want a 1440p with larger screen size for seeing the tiny pixels from afar. I remember getting shot by energy weapons from places I couldn't even see, squinting.

Like one person said though, matchmaking was quick. So dying wasn't too bad.
I may give it a go today.

Coke and whores, baby! COKE AND WHORES!

You're already playing the better game, though (Hunt).

While Hunt is a good game, it requires a far larger time commitment. Part of what makes this game so good, in my opinion, is how quick and easy it is to jump into a match and not have to worry about anything. My biggest issue with Hunt is that, generally, the stakes are too high. It's not like Apex, or something like World of Warships that I can quick play a match or two and not give a shit with how I rank.

So far my only beef with this game is the way it forces you into a cohesive 3 man team. That's great if you know you can pull your weight. Not great when you have no idea who you are gonna get. That breeds the kind of salt you get in Rocket League. "My teammate sucks, I'm quitting this match."

I like what I've experienced of the gameplay but I'm at a point right now where I don't want to play with people who expect me to perform. I want to play and have fun. When I get forced into a 3 man team with specific roles it's not really relaxing. Not like say TF2 was where at least you'd respawn over and over and you were playing on a team large enough that some can be good and some not and it'll all even out.

We'll see. I WANT to like this game.

That sums up why I tried a single match of Fortnite. Random pairing with 3 other people and I had literally no clue what I was doing. Weak link as fuck. That was the fun of TF2. Jump into a 15/16 game of ctf_2fort and just learn the game with no pressure.

Probably sound odd to most folks but being forced onto a random team just makes me physically anxious. It took me the better part of a year before I ever did a random matchmaking strike in destiny.

That was my first experience with Fortnite too, and my team chat wasn't even working so I couldn't even ask for directions nor hear what they were saying. :D Took me a whole day to solve what was the problem. But then I figured out that most of the unknown people are snot nosed brats with a potty mouth so I ended up disabling it again whenever I played with unknown people. Quickly I went Solo (when I figured out that was also an option) and learned my way around the game by myself with no pressure from the team.

I know exactly what you are feeling, I also get anxious around people that I do not know, that is one of the reasons why I do not really play online games and taking the first step and try Fortnite was a damn nightmare. These days I only play with my good IRL friends, and few people that I do not know personally but are friends or relatives of those IRL friends that ended up becoming my Fortnite gamemates through several gaming sessions together.

Not sure what "your day" was, but back in the day of Quake 1 DM... that definitely wasn't BR.
It's not... but it is in a sense. You can think of it like capture the flag in that it's just a game mode. Battle Royal is like LAST MAN STANDING mode, arena mode, or sudden death with the only different is a shrinking bubble. Fortnite has much larger maps and the ability to construct things but that's about it. Also back in my day skins were free and you can even make your own.

That’s not exactly fair....respected developers should typically have freedom rather than it being the outlier

But sometimes you get Daikatana when you give a successful developer all the leeway they want. ;-)

Even the best need some oversight... but the problem is what is the right amount of oversight... it definitely is different for each studio.
But everybody can agree that EA has definitely driven a lot of good games into the ground by requiring un-player friendly features like excessive microtransactions and yearly sequels for non-sports series.

isn't battle royale last man standing? I have no clue as the only stuff I know is death match and capture the flag

Yes, except with more people and bigger play-are that shrinks as the game goes on.

QuickPlay was put in Hunt months ago.

I've been pleasantly surprised by this game. I played a bit of PUBG and really disliked it, that was my only other experience with battle royal. In Apex they fixed a lot of the garbage that was so frustrating about PUBG. The guns feel great, something between borderlands and battlefield (weird I know), but hit reg, recoil, reloading, etc. just feels right. The respawn mechanic is awesome as well, if you get knicked early on, you still have a chance of being brought back by a squad mate.

So far so good, I just got to git gud.
