BioWare's new IP: Anthem

every game is going to have its detractors...in the end Anthem is going to sell a ton of copies...will probably set a new record for BioWare in terms of numbers...all these games-as-a-service multiplayer online games require time to see what works and improve...Destiny (and Destiny 2) got much better after a year...I'm sure in Feb 2020 Anthem will be regarded as one of the best

I normally don't like multiplayer co-op online shooters like Destiny...but something about Anthem drew me in- the jetpack flying mechanics, the diversity of the javelins, the gorgeous world, the graphics on PC, the fluid combat and movement and the Goldlike power of Storm!...only issue I'm debating is whether to get it on Day 1 or wait a few weeks...

Make sense. From the demo there doesn't appear to be a "single player" game mode. The closest you can get is a multiplayer server set to private.

server set to private is pretty much single player...you won't get any other players jumping into your game

Yeah but you are still joining through match making . It's an online only game so it makes sense if the platform you're playing on charges for online access, you would have to pay for it.

Not sure if you guys noticed but the last few days the game developers did some really great work explaining what will happen at launch and what still needs to be done..

yeah a lot of info coming out...I think the game is going to get bigger and better over time...6-12 months down the road this has the potential to be something really special...one of the interesting things I saw online...BioWare live service boss Chad Robertson confirmed in a Twitter Q&A session that saves will transfer to PS5 or Xbox Project Scarlett if it gets a next-gen version...

Excuse me, but I have serious trouble believing a modern 'live-service' game designed to fleece you while drip feeding you "content" in the form of differently colored enemies to pew pew at can ever be something special.

In the end it is all the same as long as you are enjoying yourself and don't have to be forced buying stuff you feel you should not.

LOL, No. A game should be something special already when I pay for it. I'm not in the market for empty promises. Especially since star citizen.

I have an Origin sub so I'll play it when I feel like it without owning it :)

$15 a month is cheap.

I take it you've never played a multiplayer shared world shooter type of game like Destiny, The Division etc...Anthem is good now but will only get better as it goes along...Destiny didn't hit it stride until approximately 1 year after launch...same with Division 1...it takes time for these games-as-a-service to evolve...see what works, what doesn't, how people are playing it etc...even Battlefront 2 got much better after a few months...the fact that all future Anthem DLC will be free is great, no lootboxes and only cosmetic microtransactions

there is a lack of content at launch but it seems like every month they plan on adding something new...the game is not perfect but I had a lot of fun with the beta so I'm in and I never fully got into Division, Destiny etc...

I play a game maybe 30-50 hours at most, some get tedious even earlier than that. So it seems like a weird concept to me to wait a year for a game to get good. I actually played both destiny and and the division, and hated both. They are simple like a stick. Linear levels, no exploration, the simplest mission structure "eg defend for x waves of enemies" or "kill 15 enemies then move to the next checkpoint kill 15 enemies again" The narrative is just background noise at best, not interesting at all.

I want a game to have a narrative first and foremost, and the gameplay should build on that. Not the other way around: filling in the pauses in gameplay with bits of narrative. Put frankly the narrative in anthem and most similar games are like the paint on the wall in an art gallery, none will stop to look at it.

While I don't agree with you 100% I do like your point about narrative and also find it lacking in a lot of todays games.

Would be nice to have a little more "Stay awhile and listen"....

Looking forward to playing the full release. Already got my Digital Code for the Legion of Dawn Edition. On XB1, it was 37gb download. Now just a little more waiting.....

These live service looter shooters are a literal incarnation of hamster wheels for gamers. Throw in metric fuck tonnes of $DLC, microtransactions and loot boxes, and you have a publisher's revenue generating wet dream. Without a compelling narrative, thoughtful characters and versatile game mechanics, every single one of these games has utterly bored me to tears in a matter of hours.

LoL - I like how they're using Ozzy's "Crazy Train" for the background music in the latest trailer...at least it sounds like it.

Remember when WoW had that promo video with Ozzy's character? ; )

Oh found it..LoL

Glad I'm not the only one who thought that when they heard the music.

Wow, this heaping turd launches THIS WEEK? I thought it was supposed to be late 2019.
God help anyone playing this.

Heh, Blomkamp being involved with ANTHEM makes total sense as this designs for the Prawn exo-suit looking very much like ANTHEM's Javelins.

Well they did some Q&A after the last demo where they announced more or less that the bugs from this demo would be fixed at launch (22nd). Some of the disconnects and vanishes mobs should all be a thing of the past.

There have been a decent amount of folks on youtube that have some opinions on this game and EA involvement which seems to be a little lopsided.
So far Bioware developers have stated nothing that is available will cost you any money only the skins they want to charge for that not any of the other content.

Which more or less deals with all of the blow back from EA being involved and no one of the youtubers have a reasonable answer why not to trust this.

people need a reason to hate EA even if there's nothing to hate...EA/BioWare has already confirmed that there won't be any loot boxes and the only microtransactions will be strictly cosmetic...I was going to wait a few weeks after release to buy but I feel comfortable with the game after the 2 betas so I'm in on Day 1 (even though I'm sure they'll be some issues at launch)

Well signed up for 1 month of Origin premier today, preload starts tomorrow and according to the origin client game unlocks Thursday at 2:30pm.

As much as I want to play this game now I expect it to still be buggy by the time you play it. I'm hoping it'll be more stable at its final release.

what happens if you like the game after playing a month with Access?...then you'll be paying $60 for the full game plus the $15 you paid= $75 total...that's why I prefer to buy the full game...the betas were enough for me to decide...plus if you ever cancel Access then you lose all your games...

not sure if im going to like this game past a month, why pay full retail for the game if I dont like it? And atleast this way I get access to other games I dont have on my PC like BF1/V for a while to. If I do really enjoy it I can either buy it off origin for 10% off or buy it somewhere else for less im sure, usually alot easier to get a game like this cheaper a month after launch. And if I don't like it then im only out $20 (CAD) instead of $80.

I'm going to find out, hopefully its not horrible lol

My wife and I both bit. Pre-orders on CDKeys are $12 off. I have moderate expectations and I don't always agree with reviewers.
Some people absolutely hated Destiny 2 and I loved it. I even liked Fallout 76 at first. Yet RDR2 is hyped as the GGOAT and I can't stand it.

Don't forget that EA has pretty dismal practises. EA wants to make more money for their shareholders , that money has to come from somewhere.
Bioware just does not want to get caught up in this for a really good reason...

I think EA learned from Battlefront 2's mistakes...they also learned from Destiny 1/2, Division 1 etc as far as online loot shooter type games...

Are they going to bring back the Demo?

I tried the demo last week but it didn't go well. First it started on one of my secondary displays connected to my integrated graphics card and there was no option to switch it to the monitors connected to my 1080ti. I had to manually edit a config file to change it... Then once I did finally get the game to work it kept crashing and I gave up.

I was able to get about 10 minutes of gameplay which was fairly fun so I'm willing to try it again if there is a demo. But i'm not going to risk paying any money for a game that probably doesn't work.

Maybe I just need the newest NVIDIA driver (I was on last month's) or maybe they've fixed the crashes since then.

Just do a search after the 15th see if more people having those problems. You can watch some more game play being streamed on Twitch or Youtube. Plenty of people with early access.

I hated EA before it was cool, way back in the 90's when they destroyed Origin and a bunch of other studios. Time has eroded those feelings, and maybe I'm just numb to it because frankly I don't see how they are much different than many of the other big publishers these days. I like looter shooters even though none have been able to suck me into the endgame. Only thing I'm asking myself is if I should pay for Origin premier to get in early. You get I think a 10% a discount when buying a game as a premier member, so basically I can spend 15 bucks to jump in early, then pay 54 to own the game. 9 bucks extra for a week of early play, no big deal but still not sure if I want to bother.
