VentureBeat Previews Amazon's MMO

Good luck with it. Most MMO's fail cause they get too greedy. Look at Blizzard with World of Warcraft falling apart, but yet have time to make a pig mount that costs $25. If you're going to have microtransactions then at least have the decency to make the game free. If you're going to charge money for the game and include a microtransaction store then be prepared to fail horribly.

Yea sure fail horribly.. after 15 years and BILLIONS of dollars. Your definition of failure is very interesting. I don't like what they are doing now, but come on!

I was in one of the alpha phases and I played maybe 2-4 hours or so one weekend. I do not particularly care for games with semi to full open world PvP. There were safe areas (Sanctuary?) where you couldn't be attacked. But as soon as I left it I got ganked left and right within minutes of leaving a safe area. I was able to gather some mats and craft a few things but mostly dealt with prickholes. So not my cup of tea at all for sure. Anyone who likes griefing might love it.

That's an interesting point. I bet there's lots of interesting data to be pulled from user's ingame behavior, especially when combined with the viewing habits, purchases, Alexa spy data, etc Amazon already has.

wait till amazon starts having ingame ads.. specific to you.. from what you buy from amazon itself.

"You've been temporarily suspended for 72 hours due to abusive language. While you wait, 'How to make friends and Influence people' is available with Prime shipping!"

That's the least disturbing possibility to me to be honest. Wait until they start noticing correlations between your ingame experiences and RL purchases and start to manipulate your Unique 'Play how you want to play' experience to spur spending \ other amazon service consumption.

Can imagine some of their idea's for an MMO....

NOW the Amazon Warehouse MMO! You can pack items into boxes! Possibly get laid off! Go home and try to barely survive! Then come back and do everything all over again! May be a good job trainer for them... :singing:

As for other MMO's, i played Everquest for years. Still remember spending 6+ hour corpse runs in the plane of Fear since everything was killing us as we tried to get our stuff back. The "Train to the entrance" runs in Unrest were a favorite also. Also, multi-hour spawn camping to get that one rare item... lol
Still, i remember we did an Avatar of War kill with only 6 people once the expansions and gear let us do it. Fun times, but people today would never stand for it as they want everything now it seems.

I'm not saying that WoW wasn't a good game, I'm saying it isn't now. Even at 1 million subscribers that's at least $15 million each month, not counting the micro-transactions and the in game gold buying which I think is $20. They're still profitable but they aren't WOTLK profitable.

For Blizzard, was it worth losing millions of subscriptions and expansion game sales for the modern casual friendly micro-transaction riddled WoW? They opened pandora's box and it's too late, and people see them for the company they are. I'm never going to pay any subscription fee for any game, especially after playing on private servers with people who donate their time and money to maintain a script kiddie server. It's 2019, what is Blizzard doing with the $15 monthly fee besides pocketing it?

This is the problem I have for any new MMO that enters the market cause it seems that it's all just to get on that $15 monthly fee. If not the monthly fee then the game is riddled with micro-transactions like Destiny. Nobody wants to make just a good fun game that profit only from expansions. Monthly fee or micro-transactions, either one of these will end up in Amazon's MMO, guarentee'd.

WoW had its day, even if they kept the same strategy they were using up to WotLK they would still be in this boat. 15 years is a long time, not matter how many expansions they put out it’s still WoW it’s going to get old. And the players are going to get jobs, married, kids, other hobbies, certainly not spend the 8+ hours a day playing that same game over and over. Granted I like the subscription model, I’ll take it over P2W any day of the week. If they are using the money to keep the lights on, add content, upgrade services, keep out cheaters, and limit harassment then power to them. I miss having time for most games, I’m just lucky if I can grab a title from a year or 2 back and get a few short hours a week.

I think this game looks like it could be fun, and if it’s anything like the documentation says it should basically be middle earth EvE which could be cool. I wonder if it will be free with a prime subscription.....

How about the fact that it can handle 300+ people engaged in an actual active battle without issue.

I will believe it when I see it. The engine in Camelot Unchained was designed to do this but I still have not even see anything past 50 vs 50 yet.

They've literally already done it. They've put 300+ people into one big combat without any issues or slowdown.

Better graphics than RDR2? Hah!
I don't even own a console, but I'm in the New World alpha and I've seen RDR2 and it's not even close. New World has a lot of texture popping, draw distance is ridiculous and the animals/monsters just walks in a circle and they are dumb.. Kinda surprised how nothing has changed with NPC's in 20 years, like literally nothing.
There are good things like the crafting system, but overall the game is boring and it's all about the grind and teaming up with a guild.

AH, CryEngine. So, it's guaranteed to run at 15FPS on my 1070. Running Hunt: Showdown for 20 minutes was the last straw

Making a lot of assumptions there.

Making even more assumptions. I know from playing on private servers that young adults also play WoW, just not as many play retail WoW. The idea is that anything after WOTLK sucks monkey butts.

I don't want a subscription model or a microtransaction model. I just wanna buy the game and play it. If they don't wanna do this then I have a lot of Steam games that I haven't played to keep me busy for years.

I'm doing 100+ fps on a 2080ti so doubt doubt it. You should be able to get 60.

This is just Jeff Bezos preparing his version of the Matrix for all of humanity to reside in once Amazon has removed all of our biological significance. XD

I like your enthusiasm, but all MMO's have seen a large player count drop over the past few years not just WoW, this is very indicative of people moving off the platforms in general or on to newer games. From the 50 or so WoW players that I played with from my start to finish that I am still in contact with almost none of us have time for many games any more granted 50 is a small sample size and that is skewed because I am a common factor only 1 of them still plays large amounts of games still and they are on disability so they don't have much else to do. Most of the younger player base has moved over to different platforms there is a LOT more choice now than there was 15 years ago in regards to good online games, and sadly most of those are either micro transaction or P2W. Online games cost a fair amount to keep going and even at $60 a copy that will basically cover development costs not a lot more, bandwidth, moderators, support future development that all costs money and that has to come from somewhere, though I do feel that if a game is going to charge a monthly fee you shouldn't have to pay to install it and any expansions should be included in that monthly doing both is just wrong at this point.

What year are you posting from? Camelot Unchained can go well beyond that. Even Mount & Blade Warband back in the day could push a 222 player server if you didn't mind a little extra lag and rubberbanding. Maybe typical servers of today could handle that just fine?

This. Camelot unchained can do over 2000 as of recent tests.
