AMD Radeon VII Unboxing and Teardown Video @ [H]

They gave you a stand with RGB lighting, but the card doesn't?

Pfft, what a piece of junk.

“Hello AMD? Yes I need a new R7. I broke mine pulling off the fan shroud.”

Pretty looking card you have there. Here’s hoping it stacks up.

Yeah, those are heat pipes (5, flat) extending from the main heatsink mass.

Pretty cool, looking forward to the review.

You got some balls pulling it apart before the benchies are done :)

That TIM, probably similar to those reusable CPU pads (search for graphite thermal pad on Amazon), but those on the radeon looked slightly 'sticky'. Used one of those from amazon on the last pc I built for someone and they worked great.

10-4 on those graphite thermal pads, use them on 3 of my computers - no more cleanups, pulling CPU out of socket etc. Performance wise I think I lost about 1c if that much.

Cool video on the teardown.

Well, our review sample got conveniently sent to the wrong state....so we did not even have a card till Friday, which was with Brent. AMD was nice enough to ship another here to me in Texas to do the full breakdown. You see the Saturday delivery stickers on the box?

So what I am going to do with this card is get it put back together today, and put it in my personal system, and see what kind of clocks we get compared to what we get on the test bench.

Did anyone else feels stressed watching Kyle pull apart that pretty new card?

not really, probably because it seems he handles it with honest care :), … also thoughtful to show ounces and grams, great video !

I like the visual style of the card, clean and very nice ! (or was that because of the video equipment/skills)

My thoughts on these are that you would rather see the hardware instead of the person talking about it. I did buy that camera with close up 4K shots in mind. And yeah, if you have a large 4K screen, it is nice to see things with. I see a lot of things in the video when editing that are not apparent while I am working on the test bench.

Your documentary filmmaker game is getting better.

It's definitely a nice looking card. Given the price, I hope it can at least manage somewhere between a 2070 and a 2080 in terms of performance. Nvidia nearly doubled the price of graphics cards this generation, so it should at least be easier for AMD to make a case for this on value grounds.

Edit: Maybe not quite doubled, but it sure feels like the price increased a lot from the 10 series.

I need to go grab a Frontier and look to see if the waterblock would still match this.

I'd be interested in seeing if the waterblocks already on the market for vega 64 would work with these cards since the main cooling surface (proc and hbm2) looks to be about the same.

Can't wait for the review. Going to get one for my streaming machine to play around with and do some benching. Wish I could get a reviewers kit. Maybe I can find one on the bay someday. Would like to have the acrylic stand for my collection.

Pretty excited to see how it performs. Sure looks pretty at least. Might try to pick one up if the performance is actually a decent step up on my 64.

I'm actually quite excited that they used a graphite thermal pad for the launch. I've been using the reusable graphite pads for my CPU's over the past year with great results. Looking forward to tweaking around with it when I get mine later this week.

Mmm, would look right at home in my Ncase M1. Too bad I'm not in the market right now, hopefully it does compete.

Already planning to purchase on Thursday. Hope to get a reference card from ATI Markham (just like I did my 9800 XT).
Well yes, I know the above won't happen - but I can dream.

Excellent teardown, I am excited to read the review! AMD Is on its way back!

Beauty incarnate!

As soon as you got the heat sink off and I saw that PCB my first thought was 'Where's the clusterf* of vrms?' and then you mentioned the same. Truly impressive looking and wow, that heatsink ain't messing around. Can't wait to see your review.

Awesome review kit too. That display stand and DIE is too cool!

Good looking unit, the direct contact for the power delivery is also good unlike the 2080 Ti FE reference which needlessly sandwiches the 2 layers of pads and putty plus the base plate between the VRM and the vapor chamber making it basically worthless.

That PCB looks empty compared to nVidia 2xxx series. Anybody feel AMD is sandbagging?
Vega 56 (and 64s as well?) have very similarly “empty” PCBs. Like Kyle said in the video, without all the memory being placed around the die the VRMs don’t have to be crammed all the way at the far end.

Is there fan stop on this? Not that its that important but is there an option available in wattman?
