GameStop has been in a tough spot due to the increasing popularity of digital delivery and waning interest of packaged video games, and to save itself, executives tried searching for potential lenders. Sadly, nobody thought GameStop was a good investment due to its grim future: “A new console without a disc drive — unlikely, but possible — could kill their business,” Pachter explained. “And all this talk of Amazon, Apple, and Google streaming (video games) causes some to question whether there will be consoles at all.”

Pachter added that he doesn’t believe those future game-streaming services are intended to replace game consoles, but rather to supplement them. “But try to explain that to a lender,” he told Variety. Despite being the largest brick-and-mortar games retailer in the U.S., the company has struggled with its relevance in an era of digital game sales and popular online retailers like Amazon which offers more competitive pricing and direct shipment to consumers.

Hahaha. I would feel bad, but then I remember that time that I traded in like 30 Xbox games back in the day and got like $25.

i think where gamestop missed the mark was they should have started their own online game delivery service ages ago. they had a brand recognition thing that would probably would have helped them a bit.

Game stop deserves all the hate they get. Dishonest and unethical company. Screw them. The deserve to eat all that crow for what they do to their employees.

I remember going in to get the next world of warcraft expansion. They had free pizza. Was years ago

I miss the promo items from Electronics Boutique and Software Ect during my days of being a mall-rats while working in the arcade next to the food court.

In about 10 years I'd be surprised if stores selling console games exist at all. Digital has really made these places redundant, no more of the midnight line outside to get the latest call of duty.

Places selling used games will also fade out when consoles inevitably go fully digital.

The systems themselves will also be something that shifts mainly to online sales.

Sad in a way as it's just another thing tech has made obsolete.

I don't buy digital copies of console games. Always physical. They can be found cheaper, and when you're done playing it in a week or so you can turn around and sell it. Wish you could still do that with PC games.

I've been buying my PC games digitally since 2006 and this console generation was when I changed to digital purchases for all my console games. The PS store and Xbox store both have great sales now and even have options to buy keys from 3rd parties often for discounted prices. Sure, I lost the ability to sell back my games, but I hardly ever found myself doing that when I bought physical copies anyway. So the added convenience of digital delivery won me over.

I miss the days of going to EB and searching through all the big-box pc games, trying to guesstimate if my terrible computer could run the game with minimum settings.

I think it was the early 00’s when GameStop bought them out (at least here in the eastern US) and overnight the PC game aisles (yes, plural...) diminished to a back wall, then a single rack. They gave up on PC long before Steam took over. RIP EB games. GameStop, not sure I can say the same for you...

The days of stores like this are past - I used to shop at EB, Software Etc, Walden Software (not sure how big there were) back in the days of the Commodore Amiga. I think bought some PC stuff there for a while - I recall trying to buy Baldur's Gate and they were out. I was not happy.
Anyway, digital software sales make them obsolete. I guess a lot of console people still buy physical discs - but Walmart, Target, Amazon, etc sell these as well.

Gamestop equivalent in France adapted and now sells "geek" merchandising instead of slowly decaying.
Since people think they are "geeks" as soon as they browse facebook and are able to keep two window displayed at the same time, or think they're the geekiest because they play fortnite, it works pretty well.

Cannot they adapt ?

I miss the days going there and wishing I had a PC, not a ti-99/4a.

The stores around me in the US are half full of geek stuff now, it’s just geek stuff no one wants to go to GameStop for :p There are a few local music / game / geek stores in the area doing really well and even expanding to new locations.

Years of pissing people off have caught up with them. GameStop created a store where people hate going to it, now they are dealing with the fallout.

I will be so happy when this place dies out and they close all those GD fkking stores that are everywhere down.

They rip off kids, elitest attitudes. They don't even have really any cool stuff.

The community can support itself.

Buh Bye Gamestop. You will not be missed.

They could salvage themselves by changing their business model to not be dickheads... and go all in on the retro craze. Retro consoles, retro toys, etc. Maybe even merge with comic book stores. I mean what else do they have to offer? Because once the consoles go digital only... (makes flushing noises)

They were great back in the 90s and early 2000s. Then GameStop bought them and it became a shit show of a store. I had an incident with a rude manager and never went back.

Fairly certain it was Electronics Boutique bought Software Etc as they were rebranded EBGames after the merger.

They can buy old arcade machines. Then it will truly be a game stop.

Good to know. It was located in a local and now dying mall. We have two GameStop stores and they are both located in strip malls. Funny thing is I've never had a reason to go into one.

Have this neat store local but in the middle of nowhere now. Like gamestop but has everything from. Original nintendo to current including some clone systems. and also a hobby shop. Was in the mall but they left for a big store in the middle of nowhere. Its the only store in a small town

They need to reinvent themselves,

1- they always sold MTG cards so go all in, sell and do tournaments in a regional chain, if small business's can manage it definitely would pad the pockets a bit.

2- board games and tabletop, once again has a market but no massive chain really capitalizes.

3- Start selling PC hardware. Create a national wide PC brand label.

4- keep up with the novelty thinkgeek branding it was a great move buying them.

5- transform into more a modern arcade, think Japanese karoke parlor style rooms for gamers. Have hosted private rooms for d&d sessions as well as small MTG rooms for private play groups.

6- lan party - getting people to gather means them seeing product and buying.

7- go in on other area markets like self built arcade machines, knockout pre cut GameStop branding and sell jamma units as well as control button and joysticks.

There are plenty of ways to move forward and invest to essentially transform GameStop into a real GameStop.

At the risk of sounding really old, what is it with the younger generation that takes 25 minutes to tell a 7-10 minute story?

That guy’s channel is pretty much all stretching out simple stories to be 30 minutes long and jumping to conclusions (also in 30 minutes)

They used to, but their sales volume was terrible. Then again that was in the days of CompUSA, RadioShack, CircuitCity, Egghead, etc.

They should have continued to do it, like Software Ect. Did. The one I used to go to was always packed with computer gamers.

The way PC gaming has exploded in recent years, I'd say they missed an enormous opportunity

Software Etc. was cutting hardware before they were bought out/rebranded EBGames ;) It was not generating enough revenue or margin for its floor space.

Yeah, I could tell towards the end there, when they started focusing on selling "Geek" merchandise, I knew the end was near.

Yeah, part of the problem is though some of the retail chain brands were never really decent, I did have and liked the Tandy line though from RadioShack, Walmart is having mixed success from the YouTube videos I've seen the desktops are a complete nightmare of rubbish while the laptops apparently arnt half bad.

I really think they could pull it off, if done right. I mean they could partner with NZXT and provide a retail chain for them. It's hard to quantify what could work and what won't. Even of they created their own laptop brand and just went with that and periphs they could score some business.

LOL is he on meth or what ?
I watched this a month ago and I couldn't believe it but it happens.

he says how bad working at Gamestop is then says there's a good one up north then tells us where he previously lived ... is he on meth?
