Seasonic PRIME 1200W Platinum Power Supply Review

With BIG Power comes BIG Responsibility! How does Seasonic go about handling all that power with its new PRIME 1200W PLATINUM PSU? Given Seasonic's excellent track record when it comes to high-end PSUs, we have high-end expectations. Once you see the incredible price you will almost have to buy one. Really.

I am probably one of Seasonic's biggest fans and this review continues to perpetuate this opinion. I probably won't need a 1200 watt PS anytime soon, but if I do, this will be it. My current Seasonic X850 is pushing 5 years of near continuous service and it has been flawless.
 
I've got it's little brother in my current setup and it doesn't even break a sweat @ full bore gaming. That 1200 watter is a tank of unit! Awesome write-up Kyle, thx!

Yupz, same here. I myself got a Seasonic-made PSU that is currently in it's 8th year of service. All day, every day, for 8 years. That's money well spent.
 
Will this Power supply be enough for a 32 core TR :)? Two Vega FE's (600w), 32 core TR (200w ???), 100w everything else = 900w. Looks good to me since not everything will be consuming 100% power normally. If so then a dual power supply will probably be in order anyways. Great review, top of my list for TR build.

5+ years on my Seasonic 660w Platinum unit and 4+ years on a X-650 Gold unit in an ITX system. Couldn't be happier.

Yep. Pretty much. You almost don't even need to read the reviews anymore. Just check out the pretty pics in the beginning then skip to the last page and see the Gold award and go about your day browsing another section of the [H].

Although with this review I did learn/notice something. Probably me being retarded, but I always assumed the "Connector Type" chart on page 2 described the PHYSICAL PORTS on the PSU and not the cables themselves. The language in the article says, "connector counts" so I always assumed this was describing the PSU. Chart mentions 8, 6+2 connectors but there are only six PCI-E ports on the PSU itself. According to Seasonic, the 1200w unit comes with 4 PCI-E cables, each with 2 connectors on them. Maybe it's my OCD acting up but why provide 6 ports on PSU but only supply four cables? While probably a problem for 0.1% of the people who would buy this unit, it is a tiny ding to Seasonic. Why build something into a product that I can't use?

I searched for aftermarket cables for my Seasonic unit in the past and found no easy/cheap/"non-custom-cable" solution. I always wished Seasonic would make/market aftermarket cables with a bunch of different lengths, especially for 8-pin mobo cables and PCI-E cables with angled connectors. Who hasn't encountered an 8-pin mobo cable that's too short to hide/route behind/around the motherboard? Or PCI-E cable that are way TOO long?

I have multiple bags of modular cables from different manufacturers that don't place nice on the wrong power supply. I wish there was some standardization so what you say about cable lengths would be more available. Instead of too long I've ran into too short on SFX power supply cables.

This Seasonic power supply is a clear winner all the way around at a great price. May have to pick this one up and start accumulating parts for the next build.

I've read that modular cables are not always compatible even between different product lines of the same vendor. Unless explicitly stated I'd be leery of them. I wonder if all Seasonic PSUs have the same pin-outs on ALL of their units?

Hi there, Im considering this power supply for a system with 4 Vega64's. Jonnyguru has concerns about the 18awg wire used on the daisy chain pcie cables vs your competitors using 16awg. JG recommends doubling up on cables so then only 2 cards could be used. Have you tested a configuration with 4 very high power draw cards on this unit over the long term?

Hello,

Daisy chains are not recommended for high end GPU (most likely over 225W of consumption under load) and we do recommend to use two different cables to power this kind of GPU to balance the load.
Sorry we didn't test such configuration but as long as properly powered and not above the rating power provided by PSU, there shouldn't be any issue. For 4 Vega's I would aim for a bit more than 1200W depending of the other parts of your PC. Some reviews are showing a consumption while gaming of easily 260W+

I've just bumped into a listing of ths PSU as a "miner edition". Is that safe to buy? According to the description it comes with no box, and Molex cables instead of SATA power cables. But otherwise it should be the same?! Can this be legit? As it is listed at less than half the price actually. It's not on ebay or amazon, but at a local retailer. (even with our 27% VAT it is listed for $80)

Thanks I've sent an inquiry. The retailer lists the product with 3 year warranty. And the boxed version with 2 years warranty. Seems strange if this version came with no warranty from the factory.

They actually say they'll honor 5 year warranty on this.

I got one to replace my 10 year old power supply which started a minor fire.

I love it, and it screams quality.

My only gripe is, that now once I have silenced my water cooling pump and fans, I can actually hear the PSU fan. Not under load, it gets drowned out by other things then, but when at idle, it seems like the fan shuts off, and then spins back up again. During the spin-up the fan briefly makes a small amount of noise, and then becomes pretty quiet after that.

It drove me nuts, because it makes a similar noise to what my Noctua fans do when they spin back up after being off, and I was trouble shooting my radiator fans, as I thought they were getting the incorrect speed signal from my fan controller and shutting off when they weren't supposed to :p
