Just put together a new build- 9700K with TRUE Spirit 140 Power.
The cooler included a plastic spacer for use with 1151 sockets.
No matter what I tried, I couldn't get the retaining plate to close with the spacer on the CPU.
From what I've read, the spacer became necessary because Skylake CPU was thin and prone to bending.
Does the 9700K have the same issue?
Is this a non-issue?
I left it out because no matter what I tried, the plate would not close when trying to use the spacer.
Thanks!

Huh? You don't want a spacer of any kind on there. The HSF coldplate needs to be directly mated to the IHS.

thats a socket protector.

oh that thing.

i've never seen that before.

did you put the thick end in the right spot?

Master- Yes, I tried it the way the instructions illustrate it, but I just couldn't get the plate to close.

Kyle- I finally just left it out and finished the build without it.

Thanks both!

I love Thermalright products, and I get what they think they were trying to achieve there, but that thing is simply not needed and stupid. If anything it adds unneeded steps to fix a problem that is not there, and quite frankly probably will cause more issues than it would ever solve.

Funny thing was, I didn't see it listed on the parts callout. It wasn't even mentioned in the main instructions.
I just happened to see the piece in the parts bag after I latched the CPU, (but luckily before I mounted the heatsink).
It was then that I spotted the installation instructions for it on the inside cover of the instruction booklet.
And of course I tried to use it but no go, so I just said the hell with it and left it out.
Seems like that they included it as an after thought.

They probably did, after a few n00bs got a little too torque happy with their AIO's and cracked their PCB's, then shot an email or 6 to Thermalright, threatening a lawsuit.

Probably nothing more than an "ass covering" measure. Just like the socket protector that comes with the mobo instead of a sticker like the days of old.

Spacer is not needed. It was a knee jerk reaction to the scare mongering when 1151 first came out. I have one installed on mine because Thermalright asked me to try. They fit on top of CPU on it's PCB. Then metal socket mount folds down and latches over it. Basically it fills the space beween CPU PCB and metal socket clamping mechanism.
