Crucial MX500 500GB M.2 $46 shipped

Amazing how cheap these are getting. 2TB will be under $200 in just a little bit now. :D

Shit, I hope so...I'd love to go 1TB primary (OS and apps) and 2-4TB secondary (games and misc junk) when I overhaul my system and get a MoBo with two or more M.2 slots on board.


And I'll probably stick with Crucial, because I've never had a problem with any Crucial drive (still have my original M4s operating flawlessly over 5 years later), while often measurably cheaper than Samsung, while offering about the same warranty and endurance.

I've been quietly watching the price on these for a few years now as we rotate out our production enterprise class drives about halfway through their warranty, and due to the legacy nature of our data still need 2tb drives, so an upgrade to ssds would be nice when the price gets cheaper. Even at $200 they're over 4x what we're paying for our 2TB hgst/wdc drives so the price still needs to come down, which I think it will by the time of our next rotation. :)

That's great to hear your experience about Crucial, and it isn't surprising since they are basically the retail arm of Micron. (y)

Yep, which is why I prefer Crucial/Micron SSDs and RAM.
 
Just want to confirm that this won't work in an NVMe slot, is that right?

Storage interfaces aren't my wheelhouse. Should I pull the trigger here, or is NVMe worth paying for? ImI only using my laptop for web browsing, multimedia, and gaming. I don't do photo/video editing. I have heard that m.2 SATA and NVMe have pretty similar boot times. The main difference is supposedly in large file transfers. Is that true?

Pretty much yes. You won't see much of a difference for general use between a sata or nvme. In some limited cases, programs will load faster but not that much.

Great price. I just bought a 256gb SSD for $33 from Newegg. Couldn't pass up that price.

It really comes down to the price. If they are priced similarly then it makes sense to get NVMe. But you probably won't notice the difference in your use case. Well, in the case of the Alienware laptop anyway.
