Most Customers Would Stop Watching Netflix if it had Commercials

I think the real problem is there's too many commercials i don't care for/ doesn't interest me. Video game. Commercials? Sign me up. Hardware, software? Please.

Political elections make me want to avoid the media entirely.

That and tampon commercials. Ffs, I don't want to see that!

Something tailored to my interest. If Netflix wants to do commercials, make them targeted.

If they implement ads I'll just go back to torrents. Netflix with ads would be the same thing as cable TV which I also refuse to pay for.

These kind of studies come from the same 'professionals' who said meat sales are down, but it couldn't be prices that sky rocketed, because... Americans like beef, and apparently will buy it at any price per pound, becuase it doesn't matter, price increases should not make a difference.

Well, wait untill the russians place ads in the night sky... Can't wait!

If content creators can't make money in the digital realm because people keep avoiding the ways they make that money, then they should stop trying to make money in the digital realm.

If it's truly a realm where you can't make money in then they have nothing to fear from abandoning it and sticking to what does make them money. If no such medium exists, then they go find a different way to make money.

The problem is that they can make money, it's just less money than they'd like. boo hoo. Companies need to learn that in a scarcity-free economy like all of the digital realm is, the customer has more power than the creator because you're asking them to pay for something over and over that costs nothing to reproduce over and over. Trying to go to battle over that inherent fact is a losing battle. The more they lock down the "legit" way via laws, the easier it is to avoid the "legit" way. That's what happens when your business model is wrong.

When Cable Television services first came out they didn't have commercials either. We see how that held up.

The real problem is once it becomes industry standard customers won't have a choice other than to stop consuming (which they won't do in most cases).

Edit: Removed Quote I misread.

right now netflix is the industry standard so as long as we can keep them in check everyone else will follow the same business model. once they go off the deep end then there's no saving it and we end up right back where we started til some one else tries to buck the trend.

I think the problem is media is mixing TV over the internet with a streaming service like netflix. If you cut cable to get direct tv now and and sling tv or some shit, you achieved nothing. I have hulu with ads, for which I paid 12$ for a year... Honestly, it doesn't feel to be worth that . Hulu is a POS, I will keep it for a year and cut it for just as long after, perhaps get it for a bit, binge and leave it again.

Let's see what Disney does..
Anything less than all in, no ads, no bull, they can shove it.

Same price, just add ads? Yeah, no surprise people would have an issue.

Now, make it an option on the other hand. Discount the subscription fee by like $5 per month for people who opt in for ads, you might get some biters.

So sick of ads, can't even pump gas now without a commercial playing on the gas pump...

Yea I would probably leave netflix if it added commercials to shows.

Yeah those assholes make me want to pump some gas all over their stupid overly-loud screen and light a match. Fuck the asshole who thought that was a good idea.

There would be one and only one instance where I wouldn't mind Netflix inserting some advertisements...

If Netflix starts to simulcast Tv shows without requiring you to have a Television service provider along with your Netflix subscription I wouldn't mind them having advertisements during a window of time after the episode(s) are first released.

All we need now is someone to post "vote with your wallet." That will ensure that they go through with it and nobody bails in spite of their threats. ;)

I don't have Hulu because it has ads. I no longer watch Amazon Prime now that they've started having ads in a lot of their content. If Netflix adds ads, I'll just stop watching entirely. It's not like there's anything on that I really watch anyway. The occasional show when I'm bored can easily be replaced by a good book.

I applaud the 50% who stated that they would leave even if they could reduce their monthly costs by having to view commercials.

To me, they're the bright ones in this survey.

Netflix "We are raising our prices again so you can get even more of the quality content that you have come to love with your Netflix service. But, if you'd like to keep paying your current monthly rate you can do so with commercials that you didn't know your life was missing."

I think a more accurate statement is, most people would stop paying for Netflix if they added commercials. If there was a free version with commercials, I'm sure people would still use it. I sure as heck wouldn't pay for it, though.

Whats that like? We can't pump our own gas here. It's quite comical watching someone from my state to try.

...and they had to do a STUDY to figure this out???

Someone paid too much to that firm.

Not sure it was an external study, they run these tests on a subset of their users (it's in your options to be excluded from testing groups). When this test was taking place (in many different forms) it was a shitshow of complaints on the Netflix subreddit. That subreddit is good for finding out what tests are ongoing, as users start to complain about UI changes/etc that you haven't seen yet.

What was even funnier is that they were advertising their own shows. Like, why? I'm already subscribed. Why force a video transitional on people who are clearly using your service. I get trying to keep people engaged in content, but I'd wager many are not going to desub that frequently.

I don't like it, but there has to be a breakeven point where the money from ads would cover or surpass subscription losses due to commercials, for this plan to move forward. I just hope they don't do what youtube has been doing, breaking up videos every 3 minutes with ads. That is the most annoying thing yet.

I have clicked off youtube so many times for that. Usually is a "OH FFS!" and then leave.

If netflix added commercials to its content I would unsub immediately. Commercials are the #1 reason I never watch live TV anymore, record, watch later and skip all commercials.

I NEVER see ads on youtube with adblock plus installed on my pc. Watching on phone however is a diff story which is why I almost never watch youtube on phone.

Hulu’s bottom tier has ads. The tier that costs similar to Netflix has zero ads.

It will force me to finish setting up my Radarr/SickBeard setup for automated downloading of shows.

You'd be one of those single digits. Netflix & Hulu (and Steam) eliminated piracy from my life. The price was just great, huge selection, no commercials (that's why I love movie rips instead of Blu-ray... no commercials, no non-skippable stuff).

Most non-techie consumers will continue. They'll bitch about it, but they won't cancel. At least that's my guess.

Exactamundo. Feels like a roundabout way of justifying the rake hikes... people will keep paying the increases as long as it is ad-free. That's the value argument I'm hearing.

I'm paying for ad-free Hulu and ad-free CBSAA. I would also pay for YouTube Premium (ad-free) if they'd sell me a version without YouTube Music, which I don't want.

And I also subscribe to Amazon Prime and HBO via Prime Channels. Those two are running pre-show ads for their own programming- which doesn't bother me at all.

But the instant I see one commercial for an Indian Gaming Casino... I am gone and gone and gone.

Scream into the void all you want, commercials and increased prices are coming as capitalism continues to attempt to draw blood from a stone.

That's the beautiful thing about capitalism though. I can tell Netflix to go hump a dead Moose instead of giving them money.

We'd drop it quicker than a delivery driver dropping a box with china in it.

Not even remotely surprising. One of the biggest attractions to me (and points of difference) between a streaming service and broadcast/cable is the lack of ads. It's incredibly relaxing to not have those constant blasts of noise and colour all vying for my attention when I'm just trying to relax and switch off. If that goes away then so does any incentive I have to pay for those services.

Yeah those assholes make me want to pump some gas all over their stupid overly-loud screen and light a match. Fuck the asshole who thought that was a good idea.

My local petrol station added these recently. I only ever used to fill up there due to low pricing and proximity to home, but now I refuse to go there. What they forgot was that there are six other petrol stations within about the same driving distance... and none of them force me to watch/listen to ads while I'm filling my car with fuel.

They can stop paying millions to Adam Sandler and Will Smith, and other has been stars — and save the consumer the ads and fee increases.

I don’t know where my good will runs out for Netflix price increases, but I do have a limit and my eyebrow raises each time I hear of a fee increase. I don’t ‘need’ Netflix. I have it because it’s inexpensive enough to just have. If it gets too pricey or implements ads I’m out.

More and more shows are getting auto skip or whatever Tivo calls it. One button press and the commercials get skipped.

Unlike with streaming I can hop back a few seconds to review something and it's quick and smooth. Fast forwarding too. My cable via FIOS is still cheaper than the mix of streaming services I'd have to get to replace the mix of channels I like - and things are getting more fragmented and thus worse, not better.

A pox on all their houses. I find myself just skipping the crap on video more and more now. I find myself watching more and more British TV than anything.

I have cable and skip pretty much all the ads except the funny ones.

All you have to do is record your shows, or just pause live TV for 5 minutes and then skip ahead when a commercial airs.

You can't do that on internet based services which is one of the reasons I don't cut the cord.

Tivo ftw. I've used them since their first unit.

Agreed.

However, I think Netflix needs to do a better job with their content recommendations. Ads are clearly not the way to due that, but I've found a few hidden gems on Netflix that a sane suggestion algorithm should've brought to my attention... There is some utility in promoting content within the service.
The recommendation algorithm went down the tubes around the same time they changed ratings from the 5-star system to the generic thumb up/down. I had probably rated thousands of shows and movies and now it seems like Netflix remembers none of my preferences beyond what I just watched.

There's also some shenanigans with their "trending" and "Popular on Netflix" categories I won't go into here.

At least LBGT category finally left my home screen. I’d never watched a single movie in that category and it was probably on my scrolling down home screen for a year.
