D-Link 8-port Gigabit Switch $18 at Frys with Promo Code

Yep, that's why I thought it was a good deal. Lifetime warranty and solid metal are both big pluses when I'm looking at switches. (y)

I was using a dlink dir-655 (wired connection only) and the speeds maxed out at 250mbps (if im lucky) using speed test.

Switched to this switch and i was maxing out at 450mbps, I have it connected to an asus RT-3100.

Interesting, that shouldn't have been happening if it was being used purely as a switch. Did you have anything connected to the wan of the dir-655?

I looked it up and the dir-655 is limited in speed because of the cpu inside. I dont think it was built to handle 1gb or anything close. I had two things connected an xbox 1 which was off and a laptop i was doing the speed test with. fwiw, the asus rt-3100 at 5g wifi had a faster speed test (300mbps), ive ran that speed test probably a hundred times total in several devices..

Either way right out of the box the d-108 is way faster without having to do anything.

As a router, it might have been limited, but if you were using it just as a switch it should be full line speed. Routers definitely make a huge difference in routing speed. I've got routers that cap out from everything from 11Mbps, 35Mbps, 40Mbps, 60Mbps, and 1.5Gbps. But all of them when used as a switch have the same line level speed of 100/1000 (depending on the router).

The Asus upgrade had a lot more to do with your speed increase than the switch even though the switch would add more ports to either router. :)
