Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Started this up yesterday. I have to admit I expected the graphics to be roughly the same as Origins. They're way beyond that. So much so that a 2080Ti can't max everything out and maintain 60fps. Dropping the resolution monitor to 80-90% does the trick, though. Love the massive view distance and light effects with the clouds. The people look amazing, too. Gameplay is a little slicker...although why they swapped dodge to X from O boggles my mind. It's like NES games where the B button was for jumping. Luckily it's at least easily editable.

Not sure you should have to chimp on the resolution and especially with that card. If you have G-sync or Freesync then you are set anyways on margin of error.

I would recommend looking at shadows, clouds, AA settings and stuff like that. You really should be able to do 100 percent 4k and work off that and get it where you want it to be.

Yeah I'm running the game at 4k on a Titan XP just fine. Volumetric clouds is where it takes the biggest hit, and the difference between Low and High isn't justified.

I'm on a TV, so that's not really an option. Image tearing is huge no-no and I like things to never drop below 60 under any circumstances. Shadows make a little difference, but not that much. That was the first thing I tried. FPS were still in the mid to upper 50's. Lowering them all the way looks pretty lousy IMO. Clouds are actually really neat when paired with HDR effects. I'd rather keep them as is.
Honestly, I'm convinced that the resolution slider is a godsend for most games. I started using it a little with my older 1080 card and it has become my go-to visual modifier. Using a 90% scale gives a substantial performance boost in almost anything and it honestly looks almost the same. I did some screenshot comparisons at 80% in a couple different games with my old card and unless someone points it out to you - you're unlikely to notice.

Also at 4K you shouldn't need AA on High either, jaggies aren't a problem in 4k. I basically only turned clouds to Low and AA to Low. I see slight screen tearing from time to time, doesn't bother me as much as it may bother you.

The gay topic has popped up for the 2nd time. Probably will again for the next DLC.

https://www.vg247.com/2019/01/15/as...cy-first-blade-part-2-ignores-gay-characters/

Just to be clear, the game explains very concisely why Kassandra/Alexios need to have a baby. So you can tell whoever wrote this article hasn't played the game. ;)

There was a huge outrage post on Reddit that parallels that article. Not sure which one came first but it appears that people can't get off their high horses & pay attention to the actual story in-game.

There was an interview one of the Ubi devs did before launch where he basically said they wanted the player to have a choice between being gay or straight (or neither) and that was part of "your Odyssey" so it directly contradicts with the DLC's relationship. So people are rightfully upset in that regard since Ubisoft straight up lied about romance options.

What if I choose to roleplay as a pacifist? There are many parts in the game where you are forced to kill people. This goes against my 'chosen' playstyle but the game forces me to do it anyway. What if there's an NPC I want to have sex with but the game doesn't give me the option? The game has ALREADY chosen who I am able to romance or not.

In acod you sometimes have choices. And sometimes you don't. To tell a linear narrative doesn't always mean the player gets to choose. I have to wonder if acod had NO RELATIONSHIPS at all in the base game, would people be mad about the baby / straight relationship?

The baby is explained already. However it is possible to have a baby without actually being in a relationship (or what the game decides is a "relationship") and the main campaign pre-DLC already covers it.

Also I can't find the massive post on the AC subreddit from a few hours ago anymore, so it seems to be deleted. I saw a bunch getting removed from the /new/ queue, so it might be mods cracking down.

If you're getting spammed with the "DLC2 now available" pop-up, restarting the game fixes it.
It only happens the 1st time.

I'm wearing odysseus set at 86% crit and 250% crit damage. The lion pants enchant would put me at 91% but I have the Celestial engraving there.
Artemis is useful as a gap filler since purples are better. It's still nice if you engrave CC or CD on every piece.

Not all stats are available on each piece. Here are the ones that you want:

HEAD
Hunter%
CC Full
CD

ARMS
Hunter%
CC
CD Full

TORSO
Hunter%
CD

LEGS
Hunter%
CC
CD Full

BOOTS
Hunter%
CC Full

How are you at 86% crit chance in full Odyesseus, just wondering. I got the Master of Waters spear, wearing that same armor currently. When I'm looking for purples with CC at the blacksmith, how do you reset their inventory? reload? meditate?

5 base
7 spear
7 bow
14 + 7 + 7 + 14 armor engravings
10 warrior skill tree
The rest is Mastery.

You have to make a save right in front of the blacksmith, then check his inventory, and reload. Some blacksmiths actually have two inventories, as soon as you close the 1st time, immediately talk to him again and everything will refresh. Then you can reload and repeat it 2 times again. If you buy something you have to go to a new blacksmith.

Gotcha. I just got to level 50, assuming you put them all into CC from 50 to 70?

Max CC Full HP and CC, then max CD Full HP and CD.
It's more efficient to stop at 14/20 points on each since there's a massive drop off on the last 6. Also make sure you visit the cave blacksmith and buy the engraving upgrades.

The 30 free points they gave out last week made it a lot easier.

30 free points? Definitely didnt see any 30 free points

Must get them @ Level 70 im assuming?

When they added the Mastery system a month or two ago, each level (beyond 70) required 25 million XP which is insane.
The new patch lowered it to about 1.1 million. As a consolation prize, Ubisoft gave 30 points to everyone who is already 70.

So new people hitting 70 won't get those points now. I've been playing a lot, grinding contracts and the 50% XP buff and I just hit Mastery 22 a few hours ago. So earning those 30 points thru gameplay takes a ton of work. Ubisoft over-compensated, imo, but with the new nerfs those points are borderline necessary to max out crit stats.

Yeah well that's kinda crappy for anyone who wasn't level 70 yet. I can't play on Nightmare at this point with a crit hunter build so I had to lower the difficulty. It's still one of the best games I've ever played though from an open world single player RPG perspective. I like it more than the Witcher, which I never thought would happen with an AC game.

I'm over 100 hrs in and only about 60% story complete, lvl 48 and having a ton of fun with this game, but stability has recently become a real problem. I rebuilt my PC late last year and of course fiddled around with overclocking the 1700X and Vega56 so chalked most of my problems up to that but now I'm running stock on both and last night I must have had a half-dozen crashes in less than 2 hours of play.

The most common problem is a hard reset once the game gets to the main menu screen with the statues of Kass and Alexios. "Press any key to continue" and... black screen and my PC is rebooting. But last night it threw in some general crashes to the desktop to boot. It's interesting too because I can get back into the game and the hard reset will repeat 2 or even 3 times in a row- I even let it sit at the statues screen without pressing a key last night and the PC reset. I'm still not ruling out a hardware issue at this point, or possibly drivers (upgraded to latest radeon this past weekend), but it wasn't nearly this troublesome during my first 75 or so hours of play, though I feel like the hard reset crash has been present to some extent all along.

So far my only real gripe is related to the controls. I really don't understand why they mapped dodge to "X" rather than "O." You can change that, but then you're using X to scale down cliffs, swim down, etc.

You basically have to choose to have a dodge that is polar opposite of every other action game OR have your descend button be the opposite of every AC game thus far. You can go down the rabbit hole of remapping a whole bunch of functions, but I have yet to find something that doesn't either break a function or go against years of muscle memory. I hate when devs do that. It's just needless.

lol yeah, i got used to it, don't really think about it anymore. the only problem i have is trying to change arrow types on the run with the D-pad when im dodging and running and trying to aim to shoot arrows at the same time. ive played hunter the whole game basically because i like kiting the fuck out of enemies, old habits die hard - always played rangers in MMOs and thats just how i roll

So far I'm approaching combat mostly like the last game, although the longer dodge is a little cleaner than the previous double dodge from Origins. Enemies also seem to stay in their "whiff" poses a little longer.
Both are basically like a looser spin on Dark Souls or Nioh. Do your best to get behind enemies and don't get too greedy. I'm sure there will be foes that require some different techniques, but it seems like a valid approach thus far.

Some of the games World Bosses feel very Dark Souls inspired. Nightmare difficulty is no joke, very unforgiving. Especially now playing a "nerfed" hunter build - dear lord, I had to lower the difficulty.

I'm not super far, but it already seems like attacking enemies that are well over your level = a bad idea. In Origins you could get away with going 4-5 levels up, but in this game it's like fighting a tank with a stick. Even if their patterns aren't that nuts and you can hit them at will, hitting something 30 times and dying in 1 hit is pretty tough.

I've also discovered that the game's auto-save suuuuucks. I haven't figured out what triggers it (time maybe?), but I'm saving the game a whole lot after dying and losing like 15 minutes of progress.

lol on nightmare it seems safe to at least quick save about....every 10 steps.

and yeah as i was leveling i wasn't trying anything that was more than 1-2 levels over me, you basically get one shotted on higher difficulty. really easy to get your ass handed to you if you encounter multiple enemies at once.

i'm currently 53, everything seems to be 1-2 levels lower than me at this point. assuming 50 was the games original cutoff and things don't scale above you at this point.

I do this solely because of predator animals. There are so many times I ride past a bush and get insta-gibbed by a lynx or wolf hiding in it.

In fact, I am thrust into combat every 30 seconds while riding my horse and it's really frustrating overall. If you're being chased by an animal and you go anywhere near an enemy camp, it aggros everyone in the camp instantly.

I don't know why they raised the cap to 70 if they were planning Mastery levels... It makes no sense.
Enemies will still go up with you, and you still need to upgrade your gear constantly, but nothing new unlocks as you level.

I recommend you start making games then. Games are like movies; the audience doesn't choose what the makers do or don't do, but they retain every right to take a pass or consume it. Further, the thought of pacifism in a title that has the word 'assassin' in it seems odd. Film makers and game developers aren't there to scratch everyone's virtual bucket list or to cater to any ideals held by members of the public. They make a product that they want to make; if they want to make a DLC that doesn't cater to the LGBTQ community who cares... It's a game and in one's life nobody is stopping anyone from having gay encounters.

LOL you're telling me brother. Animals are the most dangerous thing in the entire game, it's kinda hilarious.

I've had chickens aggro me by just running past them. Bumping into them does it, too, or using your fire/poison weapon buff. They are relentless.
They're small, they travel in packs of 3 or more, and when they fly through the air when they attack.

Just finished both the DLC chapters so far and aside from them being incredibly mediocre (I would say, overall, bad tbh) the controversial ending of Shadow Heritage was probably my favorite part.
Kassandra is such a likable character, the game has never really been "My Odyssey" but it's been her's the entire time, I was just along for the ride, stabbing people and sometimes I get to decide whether certain important characters live or die.

As for the ending, it was nice to see her happy for a change, making some good life choices and growing as a person. Sure, I dislike Natakas, he's basically just a cardboard character and a huge pussy, but you know what? Kass obviously liked him, it was super obvious early on, and even in the 'goodbye' scene where you're given a fake choice to let them leave or stay, you can see she obviously wants him to stay.

Anyhow the DLCs themselves sucked. There are no new areas which means you constantly have to re-visit areas from the base game to acquire new DLC quest objectives. Notes and Order Members are scattered among vanilla content that you've already explored. Why make us do it all again? So lame. On the flipside, the flamethrower is insanely over-powered, which is great because boat combat is a chore.

The new levels seem like progression for the sake of progression nothing else. Let's make enemies even more OP, then give the player more levels to catch up. What is the point? I mean what's the difference between fighting level 50 enemies at level 50 cap, than fighting level 70 enemies at level 70?

it's a great game that i have about 65 hours in currently, i'm going back and doing the actual storyline now as i've killed 90% of the cultists and the only ones left are currently marked "continue your odyssey" to progress, i'm 56 at this point and now i'm just ready to go through the story and finish the game, i've done enough side quest content to satisfy myself. definitely kept my attention FAR longer than most SP games do, i was afraid it wouldn't be worth my money for the ultimate edition but it most certainly paid for itself, especially by the time i finish the base game.

Yeah there doesn’t really seem to be an end-game. I’m still playing because it’s fun and I have some forts and stuff to clear, but I’m not sure this will hold my attention much longer. I’ve played for ~120 hours so I’ve gotten my money worth several times over. I’ve read they intend to add new game+ at some point so maybe that’ll keep me going.

There also appears to be hard mode myth fights coming that reward orc. No word on that from ubi so it might be a while.

Same here, I finished the main story and I'm trying to kill the Erymanthian Boar to finish up that quest line but I've suddenly lost a lot of motivation.

Apparently the total ability point cap is 207. Regardless of how you get there (including the free points they gave out) you stop gaining points when you reach 207 total.

I totally skipped about 95% of the Tombs in the game so I could have a lot more ability points than I do at 56.

After unlocking mastery levels at 50 I went through and did all the tombs in one night. I skipped almost all of them during my play though of the main story. It was nice collecting them all and sinking them into the mastery levels all at once.

At the start of every AC game I run around and unlock all the viewpoints. In acod I do the same, but also grab all the legendary chests and tombs. Stuff that's nice to have from the start of the game and can be completed at lvl 1. Takes about 7-8 hours, oof. I've done it 4 times now.

This feels like the culmination of what they started with AC3 (naval battles, RPG elements) and they've basically nailed it now. The combat tweaks they made in Origins are especially welcome. Combat reminds me of the Witcher 3, but cleaner. I'm still fairly close to the beginning (level 12), but I can sense that this game is potentially an all-time great.

I'm also one of those people that goes for the viewpoint unlocks early. I don't go that far out of my way for them, but they're always the first thing I do in a new area. Something I discovered in this game - there's an area just west of Megaris with enemies that are all level 35+ and the normal items laying around sell for quite a bit of money. It's worth running through that area just to collect sellable weapons.

On the performance end of things, it's a beast. I'm still struggling to find a (high quality) configuration that never drops below 60fps. I don't think it's possible while keeping vsync on. I've tried taking the shadows and clouds way down, but there are still moments where the wind picks up and things bog down. It isn't even an obviously major graphical stressful moment, but when that breeze kicks the leaves and dust up, it seems to take a big performance hit. Nothing unplayable, but it goes into the 40's even with resolution scaling at 80-90%. OC'ing my 2080ti doesn't seem to affect those sections either.
