Several gaming sites recently got a hands-on peak at Metro Exodus's open world gameplay, and their videos are just now going up. As many mention, every video contains sequences of the same developer-provided clips, but the takeways of each site are unique. PCGamesN's footage includes an interview with Dmitry Glukhovsky, the man behind the original Metro novels, who notes that the series doesn't portray a "Merry Apocalypse." Meanwhile, GamesRadar's take was one of the more straightforward videos I found.

Check it out here.

Metro Exodus has desert driving, nightmare spiders, and a serious lack of ammo. This gameplay preview will give you a flavour of what the game and how we think it's shaping up before it's released next month.

Personally, I tend to agree with GamesRadar's sentiment. I don't enjoy heavy-handed survival elements getting in the way of story driven or faster paced gameplay, but I also know plenty of players who will love the challenge it adds.

The Metro games on Ranger Hardcore are honestly some of my all-time gaming highlights (at least/especially the first one). You really lost what made the game special playing the "everyone and everything is a bullet sponge, including you" kind of gameplay it originally launched with.

Immersion levels are right up there with the best. If not THE best.

He played the original but is surprised by the limited ammo and need to find new filters for gas masks? This looks like the same exact game mechanics but outside so I don't understand the problem. This is not going to be Doom, Russian edition. It has its own style.

I agree. But Doom, Russian edition actually sounds like it would be a blast. Especially co-op.

I agree. Half of the original Metro 2033 was looking around for ammo. If you don't like having to do that this game won't be for you.
Last Light was much more of a fast paced shooter with more ammo.
Both were very well done.

I think this new one will be just as good.

I was excited for a new Metro but this has me worried. Part of the reason I loved metro was for the well done "on rails" story \ action. I appreciated being able to approach some levels differently but in no way wanted an open world game.

Open world is kind of cool when it works but we rarely, if ever, get the same level of detail and polish.

I'm too "old" for open world shenanigans these days. Give me a solid 20 hour single player experience with the ability to pad out an extra 15 or so hours for some side quest stuff and I'll be happy.

I'm getting too old for difficulty and survival elements. I play everything on easy now so I can just have some fun and/or enjoy the story. My buddy and I had a blast using silenced rifles on the easiest difficulty through all the campaign and DLCs for Sniper Elite 4. Haven't laughed like that for a long time.

I love the Metro games, but honestly don't know if I can do another one.

I absolutely hated the gas mask mechanic in the original, which is why I know I never need to worry about any sequel.

Fuck realism. If I wanted realistic survival warfare, I would have just joined the army.

I don't care how beautiful the game is. It will piss me off within 10 minutes of loading it up.

If they actually fixed the gas mask filter mechanic that's kind of cool, I've played through the first one several times without ever even changing it.

Russian RAGE is the best I can come up with after watching this video. It looks really nice but I am sure I'll hate the gameplay. Unless they nail down the outdoor exploration part. The shooting part is seriously lacking. At least in the first game

Guys, didn't Last Light have an option to play the game with the old-style ammo scarcity and to adjust the damage models accordingly? Maybe this has that....

You're talking about Ranger difficulty modes (the only way to play IMO), and since I was worried that Exodus might not ship with them I looked in to it;

It's confirmed there will be Ranger modes again.

I can relate to this. There's already too much challenge on online/multiplayer games these days, now for single player i just want to enjoy a good history and cinematics, so i just play on easy.

I agree this game now looks like Rage, not Doom.

You could select a mode with more ammo and what-not in Metro Last Light.

I think this game will be alot of fun, looking forward to it.

Is it me, or does the narrator in that video sound like he got speech therapy from Elmer Fudd?

I finished both on Ranger hardcore or whatever the fuck the hardest one was and honestly don't remember ever coming remotely close to running out of resources.

I'm an old time gamer myself. I really enjoy a challange and this will be one of my must buys this year. I loved the first 2 games and I'm sure i will love this one too. Really really like the idea of the open world gameplay. Even if I'm in the minority.

I don't care about the resources or the level of challenge. I hate the fact that you constantly have to take the thing on and off to survive.

I hate wearing masks in real life, and I hate it even more in the virtual life. Really fucking distracting having to do it in the middle of combat, with you FOV changing as a part of this.

You can cheat to disable the need for a mask if you want. I doubt anyone will ban you for that!
