Work has given me a choice between a new Dell XPS 13" or Surface Pro. Budget limit is $1500. I can get a pretty damn nice model of either one at that price. Anyone go from a laptop to Surface? Pros/cons? I need to make a decision by the end of this week.

Any/all comments appreciated!

I prefer the fixed keyboard of a real laptop, although the Surface Pro does have nice hardware.

Will you use the SP as a tablet at all?

I have had Surface Pro 4, 5, 6, Laptop, Book 2, and Studio all used for work. Current machine is a Laptop 2.

I love the portability and flexability of the Surface Pro but the kickstand can be annoying for lap usage. That was my biggest gripe with the Pro.

Unless you need something ultra portable and will use it as a tablet, I would lean toward the XPS. If you had the option for a Surface Laptop 2, I would go with the Laptop 2 over the XPS.

I kinda doubt I'd use the tablet part, much. However, if it's useful, I might sell my iPad in favor of the SP.

Hmm... I like that SL2. Will run it by the boss in an email. It fits the budget, so I don't see why she'd have a problem with it.

Thanks, guys!

I have the 2017 xps 13 with the 4k screen(developer edition) and a surface pro 6 which replaced my surface pro 4.

The trackpad on the surface pro is better. A downside is the cloth on the palmrest wears down and starts too look bad after a while.

Both are good options though. I personally just went with the sp6 when I upgraded vs the 2018 xps.

Go with the laptop unless the pen input is the main focus of use. The surface isn't a bad device but unless you mainly use what it is good at being a tablet you are better off with a laptop.

I went with the XPS 13. Figured it was the practical choice especially since I really had no use for the tablet function of the Surface devices. Ordered a 9380 today with i7, 4K screen, 16GB, 256GB. I went over budget, but still got approved. I'll get a bigger SSD and swap it out myself.(y)

I would be curious to know what you do that you would need to bother to spend extra money on a hard drive for more storage. At work, in general, the work should be saved on network drives so everything is backed up sufficiently.

i went with the surface pro 6 i5 over the xps 13 same config because at the time the surface pro 6 was much cheaper at $999 w/ keyboard.
