The perfect 4K 43” monitor! Soon! Asus XG438Q ROG

We were discussing this in another thread. It looks good, although I wish it was at least 1000nits and HDMI 2.1 but it has DP 1.4.

I suspect it will be >$1500US.

I definitely want this, especially now that it ought to work with my Titan.

I just hope they haven't gone down the road of crazy pricing for it, like those Nvidia BFGD things.

I've been calling for 43" 4k 120hz variable refresh rate screens for years now.

It's the perfect size. Only thing that could make it better would be something like MicroLED instead of the VA panel.

It's a bit large for my tastes but at least it's not TV size. Otherwise seems pretty good.

Finally it's happening. With new screen tech around the corner it's a bit late though by now..

I've been gaming about 2ft away from a 48" Samsung TV since 2015. It took some getting used to, but now I can't imagine going back.

Thing is, I've had this adaptation period where the screen felt uncomfortsbly large with every major monitor upgrade I have made:

  • 2000: Generic 16" CRT -> 22" Iiyama Visionmaster Pro 510
  • 2005: -> Dell 2405FPW (24" 1920x1200)
  • 2010: -> Dell U3011 (30" 2560x1600)
  • 2015: -> Samsung JS9000 (48" 3840x2160

That said, I do wish it were slightly smaller though, as at 48" the pixel density is a little low.

According to my calculations, 43" is the PERFECT size for 4k.

I'm very much looking forward to this one. I hope they don't price it too high. I wonder when they will announce pricing.

Your office setup is extremely claustrophobia-inducing.

The office is small, but it is not as small as it looks. The large screen throws off the sense of scale.

The desk made from an IKEA Countertop, and is 74" wide. There are probably another 2" on each side of the desk, so the room is probably ~6.5' wide.

Thats a 12" sub under the desk...

VA? Wouldn't that panel type cause problems for screens that size?

I used to be biased against VA panels, but then I got my 2015 Samsung JS9000. I didn't even know it was VA at first. It really looks quite good.

I think the fact that the JS9000 is curved helps because if it weren't, I might just have viewing angle issues on the edges.

The XG438Q doesn't appear to be curved, but it is also 5" narrower, so it may not have any viewing angle issues when sitting close.

I used to be an IPS snob, but after several years with these 4K VA screens (Samsung and Sony), I'm sold on them.

I mean, this screen looks damned near perfect.

The only thing that I can think of that would make it better is if they could shrink Samsungs MicroLED technology down and use that instead of the VA panel. I wouldn't use OLED on my desktop due to burn-in concerns.

I am really happy with my LG 43 4K monitor. Even though the refresh is 60hz it seems pretty smooth to me, even after moving from my 144hz 1440p monitor. It has several picture modes including a couple of gaming modes. I bet this ASUS monitor is gonna be pricey.

Honestly, even if I get this screen, for most of my gaming I'll probably cap it at 60fps for most of my gaming. I'd rather keep the fans quieter. I'll appreciate the Freesync for the occasional dips though.

On the rare occasion I play anything online or competitive I'll see higher framerates though.

That said, I think in general it's actually a good idea to cap your framerates at some level above your mininum framerates. That allows the GPU to stay cooler and likely boost more during the dips in framerate to minimize their severity.

Sounds good but $1500 for a monitor? Nah man, not unless I win the lotto. $500 I could justify (maybe).

I have 2 x 27" 1440p's currently and they're ok but I want one big 4k.... but splitting the work between "work" and "home" on one screen is looking to be a non starter. All of the PiP / PbP I've seen look neat from a glance, but sitting in front of it all day every day won't work. So I'll likely end up keeping one or both of the 27" for work. And speaking of work... when I do have to go into the office and look at those hateful, awful 22" 1080p Dell monitors I feel like I'm going blind they are so crappy. It takes half the day for my vision to adjust to them and then I come home and I'm like "ahhhhhhh". If I go 4K it's only going to be worse.

That $1,500 I think is just someones guess thus far. I have not seen any announced pricing as of yet.

I paid $2k on sale in 2015 for my 48" JS9000, so it's not like so haven't paid a lot for a screen before, but I'm hoping this one one will be cheaper. I have other upgrades this year as well. I think I'm going to get a 3rd gen Ryzen or Threadripper, and I'd really like a 2080ti (if they are safe from failures now) or maybe even a Titan RTX, if I can justify the money...

Hey it's only money right? Kids can eat ramen noodles too, they'll be fine. :)

For me it's either this one or the 1440p 32:9 Samsung coming out...

...or both...

I'm such a whore.

Looks good but expecting it to be at least $3k.

Edit.
I assumed it was gysnc so I will say it will be $2k

Which are way overblown IMO, but this does look like a great monitor. I'm over a year in on my OLED and the image quality in games and movies has completely spoiled me, but I'm open to and watching these exciting new developments in display tech.

I'm with you guys on VA, though. I was "IPS or bust" for a while, but grew tired of the glow and after I had the opportunity to use some of the better VA panels I was converted. Never had an issue with "black crush" or the "viewing cone".

Then I tried OLED which was like the best of VA and IPS on steroids. I'm eager to see if MicroLED lives up to the hype, but so glad to see this era of large 4K/120+ displays FINALLY arrive. These are exciting times for display tech.

Funny how a lot of us used to be all about IPS then converted over to VA or OLED panels for that higher contrast. I remember becoming an IPS fanboy after I got a Yamakasi Catleap with a glossy IPS panel. Turns out it wasn't really the IPS panel that blew me away, it was the glossy coating instead. :ROFLMAO:

I went from a 30" 2560x1600 display to 27" 2560x1440 and preferred the slightly smaller size because it was a bit sharper and I didn't have to move my head to see the corners. I've looked at some Acer 43" in a store and surprisingly felt that it could be manageable with a 4K resolution.

I just noticed that the upcoming ASUS supports picture in picture and picture by picture views, showing several inputs on screen at once. I wonder how it operates then because according to the article it has DP 1.4, but the rest of the inputs are HDMI 2.0. Will it drop to 60 Hz in PiP/PbP or will it run at 120 Hz and possibly use a lower resolution for PiP etc?

This might actually be a perfect display for me when working from home as I could have my main desktop and hook up my Macbook Pro for work and just split the screen.

I had Eizo EV2736 for 6 years and forgot all about IPS glow after the first several weeks. You get used to whatever TV/monitor you use barring some glaring faults that prevent you from doing so. I had to recheck this IPS glow when searching for an upgrade about a month ago. The Eizo was a good display I could use until it worked quite happily. Now with VA it is the same story. Size and Hz you notice more but still get used quickly.
But 43"? I barely manage to accommodate 32" in place of 27".

That is because your Eizo doesn't even have any glow. From TFTCentral's review of the EV2736 : "On a black image we were very pleasantly surprised. We expected to see the normal "IPS-glow" from this screen but actually there was basically no glow at all. The black image remained dark, and no obvious white glow was introduced. Excellent news here." http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/eizo_ev2736w.htm#viewing

But that Eizo is an exception among IPS panels as every other one is gonna have glow, especially the 144Hz AUO panels.

It sure has, although you have to look at an angle, very close, not from a normal position. But it is not obtrusive, non factor.

Then obviously it's a none issue if you couldn't even see it while looking at the monitor straight on. I saw tons of of glow on my 27 inch 144Hz IPS even when sitting straight in front of it in a normal position. And on a 43 inch display, i can see that becoming an even bigger issue.

I have a 34" LG IPS monitor and I don't really see any glow at all. But I think VA looks better overall. The colors just pop more.

I'm using a 2015" Samsung 4k TV right now, lol. I hope this display is good so I can get rid of this one.

The question will be what to do with the 2015 Sammy if I get one of these.

Maybe move it to the master bedroom? It's too small for my home theater :p

I already have a 40" Vizio 1080p in the master bedroom. Maybe I'll move the 40" Vizio to the guestroom, and then get rid of the ancient 32" 720p Philips in there once and for all.

My 40" Samsung will be my bedroom TV if this Asus is as good as we hope.

Lol yep, glossy panels are the BOMB DIGGITY!

Glossy definitely looks nicer, but the reflections can be a problem.

My Samsung has a semi-gloss, and that is a nice compromise. Still nice looking blacks and popping colors, but not enough that I'm staring at my ugly mug in the mirror, lol.

I tend to prefer less glossy screens. The popping colors look unnatural to me. I feel like most screens today are WAY over-saturated. I tend to set things to sRGB mode when available, so they look normal.

That and I'm not a huge fan of glare and reflections

Hi, do you know if any larger then 43" matte 4k+ displays were announced at CES? I love that now you can now, after so many years, readilly get 4k matte screen, I would love some at least 65" matte screen as "TV" (i don't watch any real TV anyways), but I hate the reflections on even the most expensive ones, and it is quite impossible to know if iiyama ProLite LH6550UHS is glossy or matte and no other options that would could even possible be matte are on the market where I live.

CEC would be nice, but at this point I don't really care about it.
