UK’s video games industry earned 3.864 billion GBP (4.9 billion US) in 2018, and according to data supplied by GfK (physical retail), IHS Markit (digital revenue), and GSD (download figures), digital sales accounted for over 3 billion GBP, which is 80 percent of the market. Digital only accounts for around 25 percent of sales when it comes to AAA releases, however: “the best-selling game of the year was FIFA 19 with 2.5 million units sold...1.89 million of those sales came physically.”

It seems a bit negative for the physical market, but these figures do not include hardware. And actually more consoles were sold in 2018 than in 2017. GamesIndustry.biz can reveal over 2.4 million games machines were sold in the UK last year. PS4 was the biggest selling console, with sales flat year-on-year, but Nintendo Switch was the biggest growth area, with Switch console sales up more than 20 per cent.

What's the point in buying a physical copy when the day 1 patch is the same size as the full god damned game? Besides can you imagine if everybody had a physical copy of each of the games in their Steam library, I don't know about you people but I don't have a big enough house for that, seriously I am having to start buying my movies digitally because I am out of shelves I am just stacking that shit in piles now.

Wonder how long actual physical "game" stores have left at this point? Aren't the next gen of consoles rumoured to not have optical drives, or at least have a version with no optical drive?

Hmm...all of my purchases have been digital for several years. If you have kids, physical media is a bad idea. They get scratched, misplaced, put in the wrong case, lent out (and not always returned). Digital takes care of these problems for me.
On the PC side, most of my stuff is either from Steam or GOG. I haven't bought a physical PC game in at least 10 years?

Yeah I bought Fallout 4 a couple of years ago on DVD and logged into Steam and it just asked for the Box key and it downloaded it. I never used the DVD.

I haven't bought a movie DVD in years and never got into Blu Ray.
