Sarcos Robotics have reportedly developed commercial robotic exoskeletons that can help workers lift heavy loads. The 50 pound Guardian XO will allow workers to lift about 77 pounds, and offers 4 hours of run-time. Meanwhile, the heavier Guardian XO Max looks like something straight out of science fiction, and can reportedly lift up to 200 pounds, run for up to 8 hours, and takes less than 30 seconds to enter and exit. Unlike previous exoskeletons, which are usually expensive lab-bound or military prototypes, Sarcos says these exoskeletons are economical, and will allow companies to save valuable time and money. Slides mention that the suits will be commercially available in Q4 2019, but it's unclear if the service mentioned in Spectrum's interview will be available sooner.

Check out one of Sarcos's videos, as well as slides with images of both models, here.

What's the most important thing for people to know about the full-body exoskeleton from Sarcos Robotics, which can turn an assembly-line worker into a superhero? "We're taking orders," says Sarcos CEO Ben Wolff... Companies that are ready to put their money down anyway will be signing on for a "robot as a service" package, in which Sarcos will deliver the Guardian XOs, install the docking stations, and frequently visit the client's facility for suit maintenance, repairs, and upgrades. The cost of an XO package, Wolff says, "is roughly the equivalent to a fully loaded, all costs included, $25 per hour employee." Wolff argues that companies will save money by investing in XOs, claiming that an exoskeleton will improve a worker's productivity by four to eight times, and will reduce injuries to boot. His message to manufacturing companies: "Think about putting this robot on your payroll."

The first one not that impressed I can carry 2 50lb bags of concrete up stairs, and drywall and etc...
That second one though that is not bad. Looks like it should carry more than 200 though.

Edit: oh I get it now this must be a device for women so they can work in a setting that requires more strength. I disapprove of diversity robots.

77 pounds... construction workers can lift more or less the same - my basement were built from 70 pound concrete blocks...

Well that’s friggin’ cool af.

Yeah. I image searched the 2nd slide looking for a higher res shot, and Google decided it was an action figure of the Master Chief... I bet they just added some of that plating to market it.

BTW, here's my 3 minute attempt at blowing up the low-res, compressed slide using MSRN and Oyster (click for full image)

Looks interesting, lots of room for growth, improving it to 200+ would be pretty beneficial. While yes people can easily lift 2 - 50LB bags, or 70 lb blocks, etc, they can't do it repetitively, all day long without getting tired or potentially injured, this would be super useful for some of the big assembly lines where people do that sort of work.

I’d like to see you carry 200 pounds for 8 hours.

Some people work hard man its nothing new to them.

Sure man what would you like me to wear and will you be throwing dollar bills or a bigger denomination? Oh and there is a flat fee on top of the money you throw.

Did I miss in the video where the suit actually lifted anything? All I saw was the robot on treads being remotely controlled which was kind of cool I guess but nothing like a robot doing back flips autonomously.

They seem to have neglected provisioning the left-arm for fitment of a Pip-Boy, and I see no integrated HUD to incorporate its functionality, either... *shakes head in disappointment*

One of the most defining moments for me as a little tomboy growing up was ... "get away from her, you BITCH".

That was so utterly badass it changed my life.

I saw a show (think on Netflix) - the guy hosting it is the lead singer from the Wu-Tang Clan). One of the shows featured an exo-suit. It was very interesting!

Power armor? Sure why not. Oh wait, it might require plutonium to charge the thing. Gigawatts and such.

The idea is that it adds that much more to your lift.
So for the light version, your construction worker can lift his 77 pound plus 77 lbs.
For the heavy, it is 200 plus his 77.
I dont think there are many contruction workers carrying 277 lbs for 8 hours a day.

Man, this is some future shit right here, and I LIKE IT! I'll take my set of power armor now, thank you.

It is normal when first piloting a Prawn suit to feel a sense of limitless power. Prawn operators receive weeks of training to counteract this phenomenon. You will have to make do with self-discipline.

Liquid Science, I hope they renew that for another season, netflix needs more shows like that.

*squints*

First off, "Wu-Tang is for the keeds."

Secondly, I mean... if I were to hazard a guess, I'll assume he means RZA?? Nobody sang in Wu besides ODB (RIP) and as a group, they def don't have a "lead guy"..

The light one has lots of potential in the healthcare/caregiver sector.
Lots of lifting with not many workers in that field.

Have you been around the world much?

I have seen some crazy things in Korea of what people do in other countries, this is similar;

What do you think their life expectancy is going to be after doing that for 8 hours a day, 6 to 7 days a week? 35? 40 maybe? Yeah, let's skip the machines, have lots of kids, and work them to early deaths. What a great plan! /sarc

Who said anything about kids? I'm talking old men and women doing this shit. I'm not saying it's easy or leads to a great retirement. But the idea of what is hard work and what humans are capable of is relative.

I saw the /sarc so I'm not beating on you, but I was pretty wow'd by some of the shit I've seen overseas.

I think some of you need to stop comparing the weight. Its about productivity. How do you feel when you lift 50 pounds now with this you will likely feel nothing and you are as good as new. Seriously I understand the human capabilities but now you have increased productivity and you can have more people in intense labor. Hey if you don't want to wear this and be the bad ass you are, all power to you lol. But if you are one of those who hated work which required constant heavy lifting can now do it.

May be we can all be learn to happy within our comfort zone. If you wanna lift all power to you if someone who couldn't lift due to other issues, may be back issues or what not can leverage this.

I'm willing to bet you'll sweat a lot less after carrying 70 pound concrete blocks all day with the exoskeleton.

The thing that I'm always wondering with the skeletons is how good their physical restrictions are. Imagine having a software failure or a virus that would make your limbs extend to all sorts of unnatural positions, dislocating your joints etc.
