Explain the different monitor connections to me

My monitor has a 60hz refresh rate and is 1440p. What would the advantage be for me to use a different connection than DVI-D?
You can see my rig in my sig.
 
Some monitors support 10bit color over DisplayPort - useful if you calibrate display as gamma correction would not produce banding in such case
Also DP cables are somewhat thinner and of course new GPU's does not even have DVI-D DL so that is that.
 
So long as you're using a DVI-I or DVI-D Dual Link cable then there is no advantage to the others unless you want to drive audio through the monitor.
