Need advice to keep from making more bad decisions

Hi all

I recently upgraded to a Ryzen 2600 system (not pre-made but built by myself). I picked up a Asus Strix Vega 56 and find that the problems I've had with it and it's performance don't impress me. Random blurry monitors, screwed up issues with it powering down monitors and resetting desktop/taskbar, and more.

I still have time to return it and get a refund, which at this point is what I think I'll do. I have an older 760 GTX I can toss into my PC to use until then.

Would it be an idea to wait a month or so, until CES, to see AMD's new lineup and possibly a price drop from NVidia? I did pick up the Vega 56 for $400 CAD which is a good price here, and I'd be facing at least $500 CAD for a new NVidia 1070 Ti at the very least right now (unless there are decent New Years sales).

I need some advice, I'm kind of pissed at how shitty the Vega 56 card has been and don't want to make any brash decisions. I've read that eBay mining cards are kind of a gamble but should be fine to use as long as the price is right.
 
CES is less than 2 weeks away. If you're having issues with the Vega 56 then I would return it like you said and wait for announcements. Looks like RTX 2060 could be announced at CES, and maybe new Vega cards.
 
Sounds like possibly a faulty card....I certainly don't ever get issues like mentioned.....Im gonna be pissed if amd drops new cards one moth after i got a vega (not really:))

That's kind of my line of thought. The card is doing weird things with power and resolution.

HDMI, DP and DVI. I extinguished my options.

At this point I've found that the motherboard seems to be problematic. When the CPU sees any decent amount of usage it's pretty well cutting off the video card performance wise. I have no idea why this is. I've since RMA'd the motherboard to NewEgg and am getting a higher end B450 Tomahawk to replace it.

Hey there! My first post as an old newb (not sure of my ancient login cred...tried all known and no worky). I agree with others that have stated to return it and wait. If anything, since it is a little while before CES and actual sale of the rumored vid cards, you could get a cheap rx580 (as that old 700 series will suck hard) so you can 1080 game for now. My .02 .

Refurbed Asus Crosshair VI's can be found on the egg for $100. I bought one as a back up when I thought my board was taking a dump. Latest 6401 bios and 1.0.0.6 agesa seems to have fixed my problems though.

Once you get running if your Vega 56 has Samsung memory flash that sucker to a 64 and crank up the hbm speed.

I’ve read it’s possible with Hynix memory as well. Either way though, if OP is unsatisfied with Vega 56 performance and won’t mind higher power. Turn that card into a 64.

At this point I almost wish I didn’t get my reference 64 since a Red Dog 56 is $370 now.
 
I would look for a used 1070ti or gtx 1080. I just scored a used gigabyte custom 3 fan cooler for 275$. IMO a good sweet spot to wait for Navi or 2 gen RTX chips
 
15% coupon for eBay... Damnit now I need to find me a new Ryzen setup to go with my 1070ti..
 
Stay away from AMD if it's for gaming. New Vega II will be very expensive with no RTX support. Raytracing in DXR only doesn't render completely on games. It is only used by professional stuff to render complete scenes that would be too huge for gaming. My bet is RTX 2070 is the best card for the bucks. You need Full HD not 4K for gaming. So an RTX card with a good 27'' Full HD screen with Gsync is the best bet for the future. No need for more than 8 cores for gaming, so 2600 is good enough. So best move is to return the vega card or to put it on sale if it's too late for a refund, and buy an RTX 2070 card. RTX 2060 may be to low on video RAM. 8GB is okay for the time being on Full HD but 6 isn't. You need 11GB for 4K especially if RTX is used.
However wait 9 November keynote from AMD before buying a new card. But don't expect anything. They kind of lost the market and Nvidia has made everything new proprietary and developers have already their nose into the Nvidia stuff.
So except for humanitarian reasons to support AMD, which is unnecessary since they are good on the CPU side, you just need to focus on the quality of your gaming and that means buying an Nvidia card.
