Hello guys, been a bit over a month since I've had my AV-40s, and still, loving them very much. Look forward to listening to music on these everyday.

Last night I had to put the volume quite low though, like.. extremely low (3am). I noticed when it was low enough, only one speaker was putting out sound. The right one was, the left one was silent. A little higher volume, and they both started. But the left one seemed a little quieter still, which would make sense.

At my normal listening range, I can't tell if ones louder than the other. I did various tests but I cannot conclude it. Is there a definite way of knowing? It doesn't seem like it is...

It's weird to think my left speaker is the one that sounds quieter, just a month ago, I thought the right one was quieter

What should I do?

i have a set where when I got them, the left woofer didnt work at all. I "popped" it back to life by running the tweeter connectors on it and hooking it back up to the woofer connectors it worked, but overnight it stopped working again. I did the same fix as before, and then played bass full songs for about 3 hours at 3/4 volume, and they have been fine since. point is, i doubt you need to open them, but try breaking them in a little or something with some music at decent volume.. good luck!

I think it's common for sets like that. One speaker is the main speaker, which powers the other speaker. The main speaker is probably the one you can still hear at low volume, and it's likely because the other speaker isn't getting enough signal to produce that sound at that volume.

nope, in this case the RIGHT speaker was working, but the left one is the one with the amp in it.

Yeah, the left one has the amp in it. It's not typically annoying, but I find myself checking if it's louder rather than listening to music lately, lol. It's bothersome.

It's most distinguishable at the volume I said before. Higher volumes (normal listening range), it's hard to tell. Like I said, I use to think the right one was the quieter one a month ago.

lol. Well, I know for sure, at least at very low volumes, the right speaker is -in fact- louder.

Because the left speaker doesn't have anything coming out of it at that volume. Slightly louder volume, the left speaker gradually starts to get sound.

It's hard to tell any difference after the going from 'low' volume to a decent volume.

I know it's an old thread, but I had to fix mine, so I thought I'd share. The loud 120hz buzz is fixed by replacement of 2 huge capacitors, you won't miss them. The pan imbalance is fixed by replacing 2 capacitors on tulip input lines. They were 22uF but anything really works. I put 100uf and it's alright. The role of these caps is to invert the signal and remove constant voltage. In total I had to replace 2 huge caps, 2 a but smaller (you'll notice the bulge) one in the middle but I screwed it up, looks like it's not critical, and 2 for each line. To test if this is your issue, send a signal through RCA - they don't pass through capacitors. Hope I helped someone.

The most common reason for other speaker fading at low volume is the potentiometer that controls the sound level. Cheap pots are notorious for being non linear and they oxidise easy. A squirt of contact cleaner (to the part behind the wall, not the knob) and rolling the volume between max and 0 repeatedly fixes them usually. A dirty potentiometer can make your channel(s) disappear and make cracking noises when you adjust the volume.

Saw this thread so I figured I'd post too. I recently noticed my av40 left speaker was low volume too (no matter what level). I cracked open both speakers and wired them directly to my own amp, still had low volume on the left speaker. Threw them out. Guess it was time for them to go, had them for about 8 years at this point.

Had to replace mine for exact same thing.....the circuit board has an issue where i think it puts the right speaker in mute mode or just stops working....replaced mine with
Edifier R1850DB. Way better in every way except there slightly bigger than the av40's they replaced.
