I've been Eying 1070's for a while even though my GTX 1060 6gb has been flawless for 2 years.. So I ran across a Gigabyte G1 gaming 1070 for under $200 ( yes mining card, but I'll risk it ) and that was cheap enough to make me snipe it. But I don't know if it was a good idea, especially at 1080P

Now I can only hope a triple fan card will fit in my case ( Dell Precision T3500 ) and that the W3680 processor will actually let it run. I can bump it to 4ghz though.

I'd wager your gonna have to chop up that case a little bit....

Also, our Nehalem-era single-threaded IPC holds 1070/980 Ti's down to 1060/980 performance levels.

So your performance will vary but hopefully your 2 additional cores will prove useful (y)

Get back to me with some comparative results please!

(I'd love to go head to head with you on a couple of game benches for sh*ts and giggles)

Thankfully I just looked up the dimensions. 11.3" long 4.45" high. My 1060 6gb Armor is 10.8" and 5.39" high so at least no chopping more than I have. ( removed card support and part of slot cage latch )

I have an RX 580 8gb MSI Gaming X in another T3500 and it also fits. Listed at 10.9" and 5.5" high.

I will have performance comparisons for sure

It will be fun to see what it will do with the 10 year old $50 processor. I don't have $220 in the card with shipping. The 1060 was $250 when I bought it new so my computers total cost would actually go down a little

I've been contemplating a slightly similar deal for my Xeon 1620 equipped Dell T3600.

Currently running a EVGA 1060 3gb in 1080p with no issues.

Yeah the IPC is in the 1,500 range ( passmark ) on that generation. It will be in the 2,000 range in the E5-1620

Took me a minute to find again, but this was a very illuminating video.

Nehalem CPUs are fine for these GPU's
GPU is always limiting factor, especially if you run highest detail modes.
I would not worry too much about it.

For the sake of testing, I just ran Passmark single-thread....

You were right on the money!

I scored 1471 with my X3470 @ 3.8Ghz.

.... At least I know I'm doing it right

Depends on the type of game. Triple AAA shooters and 3rd person games will have the narrowest performance difference. But try playing an RPG or RTS game and the difference will be multiples. I remember upgrading from i7 960 to 3770k playing NWN2 and my framerate went up 60%. A Skylake CPU will literally be double the fps in many CPU bound games.

Sandy Bridge? You should be fine.

The IPC on Nehalem is what causes bottlenecks after approx 980/1060 level cards.

Just for giggles, Dell T3600, E5 1620, EVGA 1060 3gb, WD Blue SSD.

for shits and giggles after seeing this thread i wanted to see if my R5 1600 stock clocks was holding my 1070 back @1080p75hz but only above 250fps which who the eff needs that. also i think i officially have eye cancer now from watching those tests.. yeesh.

what did you ever end up doing with that thing or still deciding?

I decided to keep it, but I have literally no use for it. It's still sitting in the AS Wrap waiting to be put into a 1080p system or such... Funny enough I have the single-GPU version of that card (Titan Black) under a waterblock in my media centre. I would gladly replace one with the other, but finding a Titan Z waterblock is going to be nearly impossible....

I never seem to be able to replicate my passmark tests. Probably because I really dont put much effort in to it.

I do get quite a bit of variation but in the end this setup does what I need it to do so w/e :)

Damnnnn, those are stock clocks? Pretty damn good, you crushed my shit.

Kinda cool how close these scores are

Here's one I managed to tweak a bit with some slight GPU OC and 32gb ECC Ram

Preliminaries are about 100 points in heaven benchmark. 1000 points in Passmark 3D ( 3,720 total full system ) and it holds about 10 more frames average.. Yup it's choked but Mafia III holding near a solid 60 FPS now ( 53- 57 fps is where it sits ) at least is noticeable

Very cool. Glad it worked out well for you.
"Old" Dell workstations are a hell of a good value.

In my case most issues in games are due to the 1060's 3gb ram. It fills up fast and causes stutters from time to time.

So I decided to change things around a bit and have a XFX 580 8gb here now, just need a power connector adapter.

Should be fine for my 1080p needs. And last me until the new AMD stuff comes out and then I'll take another look at things.

Yeah, my other T3500 system has a RX 580 4gb, W3565 and a bunch of mismatched ram running at 1066 ( still triple channel somehow ) I think it's 14gb but I don't really remember. Anyway, it scores almost as good in benchmarks.

I should also note, this 1070 is powered by a single 6 pin- 8 pin adapter with the factory 525W power supply. It gave no issue with the 1060 even when I mined the 1060 and I don't figure it will be an issue now.

I think the new value machines though are the Precision T1650/ Optiplex 7010 boxes, since $150 gets an E3 1240 V2 ( I7 3770 sister chip ), a hard drive and 8gb of Ram.. The only problem is the graphics card length is pretty limited, but short/ mini versions are not hard to find. I pieced one together on paper for under $400 with a compatible 1070

I'm getting a lot out of my T3600 and thought it a great value.

Lots of them around too at various prices.

I have the 635W PS and the manual states it's good for a 300W GPU

matt167 I don't know how much RAM shopping you do but some of the 1600 ECC stuff that we can use is very affordable atm on the "used" market.

I have 12gb matched 1333 in the main rig. Slots all filled with 2gb sticks so no upgrade without buying a whole new set

I enabled DSR resolution at 150% and 15% smoothing and Mafia III becomes noticeably smoother, and Fraps shows it holds 57 frames near consistently

X58 is still a capable platform. The wife runs an X5687@4Ghz and RX580 8GB and has 0 issues holding 60FPS @1080P.

Games are always more GPU dependant than CPU, you can reap much better benefits from spending those bucks on a video card than on a CPU, and you can always get a cheap 8gen i3 to do the work :D

The world cannot move forward until all you holdouts on Phenom II and Nehalem upgrade your shit.
