Who wants fake rams?!?!?!

If I could get some trident gskill RGB dummy sticks, I'd blow $40 on them right now.

Seriously WTF!?
Cross off another item on my "I seen it all" list....
What's next, fake PCI-Expres cards?

I WANT TO SEE A REVIEW OF THIS!

40 bucks to NOT buy ram?

If it was a couple of bucks yeah ok

I think, if anything, this just goes to show expensive RAM really is these days.

I don't hate the idea, it's silly, and I think $40 is a lot, but when right angle PSU plugs are $30, and PSU cable sets are like $300, it almost seems like a bargain!

The thing is though, who buys enough ram to fill half the slots? The only time people really do that is when they plan on adding more ram later, when they have enough money. So if you buy 4x16GB for a HEDT mobo, are you really going to spend money on these until you have enough cash to buy the actual ram?

gigabyte actually started this new fad with their DEMO KIT they include. yep gigabyte sells 2x8gb ddr4 3200 memory kits that come with two dummy dimms. they market them as having b-die but its low binned shit modules. 16-18-18 whats sad is ive seen people that have actually bought it and then wondered why the 2 extra dummies dont show up...sigh.

hahaha not anymore!

Not a fan. If I have open space around my memory I like to leave them empty for heat convection airflow. Putting in fillers like this just makes hot running, over-volted ram run even hotter. As well they are drawing power from the memory bus. I know it is a tiny amount but is that really a good thing? Besides, My compie sits on the ground beside my desk. I am never looking inside it to see a light show.

I'm with ZeqOBpf6, I think it's silly, but I don't hate it...
Not as much as I hate forced RGB in components, for flashing/breathing/blinking/chasing lighting on hardware. I think it'd have been great to have dummy modules sold of non-RGB sticks, for the same reason. Just looks nicer to have all the slots fleshed out. Sure it might impact cooling a bit, but its not like the old days when RAM actually got super hot...

But yea, it's how "flashy" (literally) everything is these days that bugs me. Like, offer it as a "kit" for a motherboard, where you can buy new heatsink shrouds that incorporate the RGB and then plug into a specifically placed header on the board to eliminate the need for wiring. Offer edge-trim for the PCB that kinda clips-on (press fit) to utilize the RGB headers (I should patent that, assuming it isn't already a thing lol). Ideally though, the boards should lack all RGB related ICs and circuits to save us $15-30 on a motherboard, but provide the headers ON the board that lead to the exact same GPIO traces, then offer a daughterboard that does actually have the RGB driver and interface. At the end of the day you're actually going to make more money by offering it as an optional accessory that you can sell.

It wouldn't be so bad if we were at least given proper, easy to use and access, means of controlling all the lighting. My MSI X370 Titanium, which I love in every regard, has some lighting on it (very minimal) and is default (or only?) color is white... My issue is that their "Audio Circuit Isolation" bare-PCB line that they illuminated is a big glowing beige line on my board because they backlit it with white LEDs. I don't know why they couldn't have done like the had with my previous A88X Gaming board which had the same exact thing but RED dyed PCB for that isolation gap. OR BETTER YET... just fucking omit that portion of the PCB and leave a gapped trace to have glow the actual LED's color!! If you're adding the expense of RGB hardware, then you can damn wella dd the expense of routering out a line in the PCB during its production (power supply and higher end audio stuff have these 'air gap' sections, so it's not like it's difficult lol)
[/rant]

But I digress... On the whole, I'm not a huge fan of the RGB craze. I appreciate lighting, I love EL Wire, but that's a nice soft glow. I also appreciate offering nifty new computer accessories like RAM, but for $40, no.
I'd MUCH rather buy these 8x Dell DDR4 Blanks @ $15 and outfit them with my own little strips of lighting, giving me total control over everything. (Just search DDR4 Memory Blanks, there are single ones for a couple bucks)
https://www.ebay.com/itm/LOT-OF-8-G...0-DDR4-Memory-Blank-Filler-5M8WD/173662801274
Granted, the LED stuff would no doubt increase costs above $40, but these being blank means they won't draw power from the DIMM power phase (miniscule, but when overclocking, every little bit makes a difference). They also won't clash quite as bad, being design-less.

If those start to sell then, you're welcome to whomever liked the idea! lol (And to the seller for this free advertisement :pompous:)

something ive done with white leds is use strips of colored tape to change the color to what i want. ive also used a blue sharpie to change my old lian li pc-65 hdd activity light blue hehe. worked like a charm.
im all for rgb lighting but i agree the lack of a single standard to somehow pull all of the different companies together is a major pita. granted i just set them all to one color and leave it but its still aggravating to have 4 or 5 different means of control! i just like the option to change the color of my rig to whatever i want. without having to buy new fans like the old days. my case sits on my desk so i like to try and keep my wcing gear and case lighting coordinated. ill never have to worry about a pump dying and killing something being that i can see the liquid flowing thru my res :D i do like that there are more and more motherboards that offer little to no lighting but most are low to mid range boards. tbh id rather have it and not use it vs not have it at all. the premium added to rgb gear is a little out of control as well.
the whole dummy dimms is funny to me but hey if theres a market...to each there own! i just like saying dummy dimms hahaha.

rgb / tempered glass side panels can go die in a fire..

it is next to impossible to find a quality case (there are some ..blah blah blah) without stupid glass windows and lights all over the place..

I'm not some 12yr old kid... I don't need my whole room to glow like a night club.. I just want a decent solid enclosure in which I've put parts that don't light up (except as needed for debug..etc ) and in which I've done reasonable but not ocd cable management on and then put the god **** side panel back on.. and forget about it .. till i need to clean it / something gets a upgrade or god forbid goes wrong.

this is one of the stupidest things I have seen yet... well that and the price gouging people keep bending over for rgb fans... and this and that...

In fairness my buddies 12yr old son loves him his RGB AF NZXT H500i build..

i hear ya. im 47yo but i still dig having the option to light my shit up like a xmas tree hahaha! its seems there is a hard line drawn in the sand for many folks that either passionately like or dislike rgb gear! me? im in the middle. i could care less what others do with their rigs. i have no kind of emotional ties either way. i can appreciate a well thought out phanteks enthoo pro m black case with no rgb at all just as much as a rgbed (i made up a new word) to the moon lianli o11 d. both styles can be badass looking rigs.
i build rigs for clients that have zero need for any kind of lights and i have no problem finding solid gear for them, shrug. there are loads of rgb free cases, fans, gpus, etc out there.
insert- james earl jones DV voice over- in a world far far away...dummy dimms hahaha(gotta say it fast to get the right effect, i kill myself). they just seem silly as hell but its just part of the rgb progression towards rgb everything! i kid, life is too short to get hung up on the little shit! do you like you want and rock on!

Give me a clean, black box any day of the week.

anyone remember those awesome dummy sticks used for RDRAM systems back in the day because you were required to populate all 4 ram slots? even those things sold for 50 bucks, lol.

I know many people that bought 2x8 sticks of the rgb pro, that will for sure buy this when I pass it on. Those "rgb the world" people spend waaaay more on rgb stuff than a measly $40 to complete the ram look

I've built a lot of flashy PCs with case windows and LEDs, but can't say I've ever once worried about the aesthetic drawback of having some slots unpopulated. Buut it's cool Corsair offers this for people who do worry about that.

At first I was against more RGB crap...but after watching some of the lighting options; I actually want to buy one. Only problem is my house is RGB free (since 2003) so not going to happen unless I build that wall computer. But why; the box belongs on the ground behind the desk, whisper quiet.

Can we get a poll on whether people like RGB or not? Definitely seems like I'm not the only person disgusted by all the RGB hardware on the market.

^^ I want to do it...but I got 3 rugrats that will happily yank it off the wall the first time I turn my back. I'm actually surprised that not one of them has lost a finger yet to the rad fans for my rig.

Now if they would only offer a similar product for the CPU socket... as well as a video card with programmable LED lettering/lighting... and fake SLI connectors to go with them. Would save everyone so much money when it comes to needing to post upgraded rig pics. :p
