Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Most of the major studios are more than willing to hire good voice actors but keep their terrible writers. The Division, for instance, has a lot of excellent, story-relevant dialogue that fits. And then you get these odd ball lines that remind you you're not playing a digital book but instead a game with someone who has zero social skills. Masturbation jokes are fine so long as you set it up and it isn't a reminder that such and such character is angst-ridden and edgy. Ubisoft does this a lot

huh?

I posted this in the 'Free Stuff' forum...AC: Odyssey can (potentially) be had for free if you sign up for Google's new streaming service...

https://hardforum.com/threads/assas...ming-service-us-only.1973733/#post-1043988203

I got my e-mail saying I was accepted and can start playing the game using Google Stream!...I'll play the Google version for 2 hours and get the full game for free!...great deal...I'll play using an older hard drive in case Google tries to leave anything on my system

It's an oustanding game - And free is just incredible. I haven't paid for any DLC for this game and have over 100 hours at this point.

About to start "No HUD / No fast travel" for my 3rd playthrough.

it seems you have allots of free time for a 3rd playthrough, :) I wish I had more free time but I am still on my first round, but I am not doing just the main story I am taken my time.

Dang, I'm pushing 150 hours and I'm still on my first playthrough. ;)

Same here. Just hit lvl 67 & currently at 151 hrs. Definitely want more of the DLC to arrive. AC3 & LIberation Remastered will be nice to jump back into as well.

How long did it take you to get that email? I signed up with both of my emails on the day that article was posted on [H] and haven't gotten anything. I figure if I don't hear back soon I'll bite on the 50% off discount.

I signed up the same day I posted that thread on [H]...I think it's just random...the Project Stream promo runs through January 15th so there's still time for you to get in...

Not to question you but how is there 3,000 Mercenaries in game! I haven't seen that in the list of Mercenaries.

I'm to understand that every time you defeat a merc, another one pretty much takes its place. There are some "special" mercs that are there from the beginning as you discover them (ie the ones that hold Legendary items, the ones in spots 1-4, etc) and there are a bunch of randomly generated ones. When you kill a merc, a randomly generated one is added to the list usually lower on the "scale" than you. They do evolve in terms of level, abilities, and drops alongside you (ie at the beginning the Tier 9 mercs will be sub level 10 but when you're level 50, you can have new mercs added to T9 that are 50+ etc)

Thanks got in. I am not a fan of the controls in this game. I am using a 360 controller and even tried the alternative settings. I just can't get used to them and it makes combat a chore.

Yeah I got AC1 & AC2 during a Steam Summer sale many moons ago, and have 2hrs. combined playtime due to the controls not being able to be remapped to my liking.

Are the controls still the same in Odyssey? Can you rebind WASD to arrow keys at least? The tutorial was a nightmare to get past in those games.

you can rebind everything in odyssey.

Thanks for explaining it to me, now I know why 'TaintedSquirrel' killed so many.

Same here except I sunk about 40 hours in Origins

Cool, so I take it that the controls have been improved since then.

I used a controller for the entire time I played I couldn't make it to Max level just took too long I explored about 1/2 of the game though though level limit questing areas.

I don't have a controller. But I might check out the Google deal as a test run to find out for myself. Thanks for the input.

I don't know how interested you are in playing the older titles again, but AC1 Director's Cut and the "Ezio Trilogy" (ie AC2, AC Brotherhood, AC Revelations) as I recall all offered rebindable keys when I played them. All of the AC3 and later titles do as well. If possibly interested in Odyssey, I say lock in a copy now via Google Stream, but I would encourage you to consider a controller. There are some games (especially cross platform ones) where it really helps to have analog movement and the game just "flows" better to me via controller; 3rd Person Action Adventures like Assassin's Creed are a great example of this.

I would suggest two options for a first controller - either an Xbox One wireless latest generation controller (ie the ones that advertise Bluetooth as an option) and/o the Steam Controller which isn't a "typical" controller but has tons of great features and is inexpensive especially during Steam sales like the current one! Other alternatives include Dual Shock 4 pads (for those who prefer Playstation style analog stick arrangement) and the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, but the Xbox One works seamlessly and is considered something of the standard of the "major console" controllers; the only one of the 3 to natively offer PC drivers and whatnot. If you have questions let me know - I have a large controller assortment myself .

I haven't used a controller since 2000 when I had a PS1. The only times I ever felt the need for one on a PC were for racing games. Other than the first 2 AC's, I never had an issue with 3rd person shooters using a KB/M.

But I think I will hit up Google and try out Odyssey, what do I have to lose? Might even try to revisit AC1 & AC2 (OG ver. btw).

I think this is my 2018 game of the year. It’s been a while since a game has hooked me like this. I’m doing the whole “of course I can stay up until 1am and still be productive tomorrow” self rationalization thing.

how is it hard to believe an older game can look better?...how long have you been playing games on PC?...I can give you a perfect example taken directly from the Assassin's Creed series...AC: Unity was better looking then the game that came after (Syndicate) and is probably the best looking game in the entire series based purely on graphics

AC: Unity is still one of the better looking games out there, IMO. The attention to detail was off the charts. It really pushed the envelope for its time. Total shame it got a bad wrap due to release bugs (and rightly so for micro transactions).

There are a couple good YouTube videos out there demonstrating the ways how Syndicate was graphically gimped compared to Unity.

I really enjoyed Unity myself, was my favorite AC to date but I haven't tried AC:O yet, just picked it up during the sale.

That being said - I'm not a huge GOLD EDITION / DLC season pass fan myself. Is it worth picking up the season pass for this or not?

Tried it some more and think AC just isn't for me. Too many little things annoy me even if I get past the controls.

I come across some caged animals thinking if I release them they might cause issues in a camp similar to Shadow of War, but nope they just stand around. Then I go to fight the Cyclops to get the boat. The first soldier I assasinate no problem. The next triggers a cutscene with cyclops who is on the other side of the area. Then I exit the cutscene only to find myself warped to this area and having to deal with everyone who I didn't get to kill.

So I try it again and avoid the yellow tagged mobs only to randomly be sneaking and thrown into the same cutscene and repeat.

I would, simply because if you get the Gold Edition at $50 now it includes the DLC at half off. Otherwise, the DLC is never on sale and will cost you $40 later.

I did the Project Stream thing so I played for about an hour. The graphical quality was kind of shit, but the game seems alright. Is it just me, or do the animations seem super janky and not fluid at all? Like when she is on the horse she just sort of rigidly bobs back and forth.

Never noticed anything of the sort, animations seemed fluid to me.

Yeah true. F it, just bought the Ultimate Edition. May as well get it all while it's on sale, prolly be a while before it gets cheap again.

Huh... Maybe it had something to do with the streaming thing. Will have to try it when I get the local copy in January.

It's a gigantic game if nothing else. I find it kind of lacking in terms of something like a personality? Just feels a bit empty somehow. Despite being full of things to do. I have completely lost the thread in terms of the main quest. Just doing side missions. My fault I am sure. Just seems like there are far more side quests than actual main quest story events.

The legendary assassin/hunter sets on the Helix store (Celestial & Odysseus) have really nice set bonuses if you combine them with the passive Adrenaline regen ability. The set bonus itself reduces assassin or hunter ability cost by half. If you use the engraving (not set bonus) it's 25%. You can also wear the set and engrave the other to use both. Your abilities won't consume an entire Adrenaline box, so it will slowely regenerate after about 5-10 seconds, rather than be totally consumed and stay empty.

The Warrior one isn't as useful since you'll be in combat and the passive doesn't work.

The "50% damage" sets are still the best but you can still use one of the engravings along with it.

Can you get these in game or do you have to buy the best gear?

The best gear is only from regular gameplay. The helix items can either be bought in the store for $$$ or you can roll them from the lootbox at the vendor. Getting all 5 pieces of a set from lootboxes is virtually impossible.

I haven't checked out the Oikos lately, but don't the set-items you describe also get listed as part of the weekly refresh? The entire set is never all up at the same time, but something like Odysseus Greaves or whatnot can be up to be purchased directly, right? Last I checked Legendaries, including Helix-shop (ie real money) only items were available on the shop. The costs are higher to buy a guaranteed item as part of that weeek's selection (ie like 50 or 80 Orichalcum - a special currency found by running certain missions/contracts or in small amounts in nodes around the world), compared to the "random lootbox" for like 20 Orichalcum, which provides a random piece of gear? Is this still how it works or are Helix set legendaries only available as randoms? It would be disappointing if that were the case.

Finished my first playthrough last night clocking in just at under 150 hours, 99 percent completion (Prince of Persia quest bugged out on me)... I'm very happy with the story and how it was all done in terms of ties in for the series, ramifications, characters, etc. I look forward to the DLCs and expansions. This and Hitman 2 split GOTY crown for me no question.

Helix items can be "earned" and bought simply by doing message board and certain questions with the obvious symbol for the lootbox in game. No real world $$$ ever required for anything. Thorough playthroughs like mine and being a killing Terminator/ vacuum cleaner yielded quite a bit of nice loot although certainly I do not have all of the Helix items by a longshot. It can be done but I'm sure it would take numerous playthroughs.

We'll see what TaintedSquirrel tells us. He's marathoned the hell out of this thing. ;)

I cleared it at 100% / 158h / lvl 70. I have much deeper appreciation for Odyssey over Origins due to the combat & exploration being much improved. Ubi needs to drop us more of the new DLC so I can clear out more cultists from Persia.
