What AMD gpu to look at?

I'm replacing a GTX 980, looking to be at the very least equivalent to the 980 but preferably a little more performance wise. Been at least 5 years since I've looked at AMD cards, which one would be the equivelant, or slightly better, than the 980?

You would need to wait for CES 2019 is the best option. If you can not wait for that long it seems that Vega 56 and Vega 64 are both good cards to look at.

only Vega56 and Vega64 are worth mentioning.. RX580/RX590 are same tier of performance of your GTX 980 so no point to sidegrade.

Been some good deals on a Vega 64 especially if you like the games they have been offering with them.

Replacing a failed gpu. I definitely dont want to go down in performance, but I wouldnt mind going up. Hoping to stay in the same price range as used 980's too (otherwise I'll just get another 980, but want to see what's available in the amd camp too).

Definitely not looking at vega64 new prices, even on sale it's more than double what a used 980 is going for (sometimes even triple). If vega56 is a good option, I may start looking at used ones of that.

then RX 580 it's a solid choice.. specially an AIB factory OC'd one... it should be fine for you.. I have an MSI RX 580 and no complains with it.

Thanks, I'll add that to my list when I start browsing the classifieds!

A hole lot of us snagged vega64s for 350ish price thru newegg this month or others paid 400 and got 3 free games....what price are you shooting for?

Right now if you want to go AMD on your GPU, the best bang for the buck is with the Vega 64, which can be had brand spanking new (with three games) for US$399 from Newegg...

Warranties are a good thing...

Regarding the RX 580 & such, kind of a waste of money at this juncture, more of a side-grade than an upgrade...

I would say it is worth waiting for CES 2019 (just around the corner) to see what happens with the rumored Radeon RX 3K series of GPU, you can get in Navi at RX 580 performance level (still a side-grade) for about 150 bucks...

Or you could get into Navi with the RX 3080 for about 250 bucks & have Vega 64 +15% performance levels (at 150 watts)...

Everything you might get right meow is basically going to be overpriced (Nvidia) or "old" (Polaris & Vega)...

Fury tend to be in the margin of 10% - 20% faster stock vs stock GTX 980, AIB factory OC'd 980 will perform even, and OC'd GTX 980 will tipically be better than Fury, as fury are all shitty overclockers.... fury was forgotten since Polaris 400 series and stoped to receive optimizations at the same level, at some point RX 500 with more clock and optimizations catched and surpassed Fury tier of performance which exactly mean GTX 980..

Honestly? none, your 980 is already faster than even the amd cards that will come out in 2020

if you want faster, grab a 1080 ti... amd can't touch it..

which is ashame

Aside from not wanting to spend $550+, I'm pretty sure the 1080 ti is way too much for my 1080p setup.

If you can get a Vega 56 with Samsung RAM and flash the bios to Vega 64 you can quite quite a performance boost over stock Vega 56. Fairly certain it would push past 980ti performance. More heat, fan noise and power consumption though would be the trade off.

How do you tell if the Vega 56 has Samsung ram or not?
I believe original reference cards all had Samsung at first but now they're intermingled with Hynix. Unfortunately the only real way to be sure is with GPU-Z, but if you're buying used perhaps the prior owner can verify that info. I think you can flash the bios even with Hynix memory, but it's not of the same quality as the Samsung so results with clocks and voltages vary.

I haven't done it (Don't have a 56) but I believe there are other forum members that have done the Bios Swap before.

Snag an RX 580 8gb and wait until the new cards release next year. They are dirt cheap and perform on par with a 980 or better for OC models.

I think this is wise. Gets you full warranty, more memory, and handles DX12/Vulcan stronger. The older Nvidia/AMD cards should be cheaper, but they aren't.
Not sure but there might be some game bundles that will really sway going new.

As stated above, probably not right now, 580 should probably be on par, but not sure why you would "sidegrade" to that

I would snag a 580 new for cheap right now - warranty and Freesync support are nice - to get your computer back online

Then, when/if Navi, you can make a decision.

I've seen 580 8GB cards as low as $120 used in FS/FT section. For the money, that is tough to beat. If your current card is dead, it might not be feasible to wait for Navi releases.

I snagged a XFX 580 8GB GTS XXX on Ebay for not much coin.

No big deal if I change it out with newer gear in a few months and I have no complaints so far about it's performance for my use.

Performs a whole lot better than my old GTX 1060 3GB.
