Sign-ups are currently underway for Google’s Project Stream tech test, which features a fully playable version of Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Ubisoft has announced that those who are accepted will also get a free PC copy of the game linked to their Uplay account. The test, which was developed by Google to check the performance and viability of streaming a AAA video game, concludes January 15.

All game saves and any in-game items earned via gameplay or purchased with the free Helix credits will also transfer over to the free PC copy, but any unspent credits will not transfer. Players that have met the criteria for the free game will receive an email after January 15 with instructions for how to access their free copy in the weeks following the end of the Project Stream test.

Assassins Creed Odyssey is an amazing game. Didn't run too well at high resolutions though, until I built my new system.

Its all downhill from here. guys and gals

Soon your PC will become a dummy terminal as all game files will be on Ubisoft's host servers.

ok Yea I can live with that for games, problem is your OS will soon work the same way.

It's not tinfoil, its fact

I guess I gotta go play it for another 53 minutes to be eligible for the free game. :)

well that's basicaly what streaming is for, they will run it in machines capable to hiting whatever fps target they need, + they don't need DRM, so it's all up to your bandwidth, you might have latency/connection issues but not performance issues ( assuming they do it correctly )

You may be right. Remember when people said STEAM wouldn't replace physical discs?

I've been trying it and have been impressed with the tech behind Project Stream. No it can't compete with a high end PC. But it looks quite good, loads quickly and the lag is barely perceptible with a controller. There was a little lag with a keyboard mouse so they picked the perfect game to demonstrate the tech since Assassin's Creed doesn't require super fast responses.

And since it works in any Chrome browser, I can now play it on any system. I've tried it on my work laptop that is admin locked and has a 5 year old Intel integrated graphics, a $150 Chromebook, Linux terminals and even a 2015 Macbook. All work equally well without issue. So it they iron out all the bugs it would make games platform agnostic.

I still like being able to own games, play offline, etc. But I can see a lot of good cases for streaming.

This is just on the tech aspect. The actual Assassin's Creed game is just okay. Not the worst I've played but overall kinda boring with lots of fetch / kill this person quests. And it is really weird to hear people speak in a Greek accent that seems slightly off and use a lot of English swear words.

It actually runs pretty well considering it's streaming. Not crispy like if running locally, but pretty much like playing on a console if you have a decent connection.

Hoping I get selected for this one - was probably going to buy this game anyway.

As with every game from the last few years, you might as well ignore 2/3 of the reviews online. It's just people whining about everything and trying to be more dramatic than the last person.

It might take a couple of weeks, but all my friends got in. Good luck.

I have the game and have spent 0 on micro transactions. It’s an outstanding game.

I second that, the game is not bad at all and you don't have to buy in-game stuff to do anything or enjoy it. Origins had all the appearance stuff which did look neat but it was all optional. Both are beautiful games and are fun to explore. Some quests are quite good and voice acting and animation is outstanding. I wouldn't really call them AC as they kind of lost that aspect but nonetheless, I personally found them fun.

Regarding a free game to testers, I really like that and it's cool that they are doing this. I tested the streaming and while IQ left a lot to be desired, responsiveness was actually rather good. I surely wouldn't use this as main but it isn't a bad idea if properly implemented for those that cannot afford a good gaming system or are on travel for instance. It doesn't have to be a replacement but supplement gaming options for folks (provided that final cost is reasonable, I wonder if there will be a discount for users that own the game).

Do keep in mind that if you sign up for the Project Fi trial they do give you $10 in micro-transactions to spend. Just make sure to spend it before the trial ends and you can keep what you buy.

fuck you, you can't enjoy the game because the internet said you can't. You have to hate it because reasons and stuff or something.....

like you i have the game, and like you I didn't find a need for paying money. i put well over 100 hours into the game and found it well worth the money.

Aye, I sure spent mine. Waiting for a free game to be added to my Uplay account so I can play with proper 4K IQ on my PC without spoiling too much of gameplay and exploration.

The more I think about this, the more I'm interesting in the tech in addition to the game. This feels like the type of game that could work pretty well via streaming.

It's definitely not bad. Not as good as local with good hardware but not bad. Hell I tried it on my shitty office computer and it worked well enough. You're basically trading connection speed / latency for local graphical horsepower. If you are coming from a console, it probably won't even feel that different but right now, IMO local [H]ardware still wins.

Another angle is the power savings. If I can game and get a decent experience in a new AAA title while using my laptop, only pulling like 15W, that could add up to some savings. It won't be a lot for any individual gaming session, but over the course of months or a year it would make a noticeable difference.

Holy sh*t.... I got in!

Since I already own the game, is this some way I can give this to my brother??

It's tied to whatever Ubisoft account you use to sign in to the project stream trial for the first time. If you use his account, it may work.

What are you talking about, the game is a disaster with micro-transactions for a single player game. The MetaCritic user score reflects this. No wonder they're giving it away for free.

Do you have your own opinion, or just running with what some youtube "stars" / - I use the terms as loosely as possible / told you to think of the game? Like metacritic is worth something. Most rabid fanboys will downvote or upvote games just because their favorite youtube personality / again I use the terms as loosely as possible / told them it was such and such.

If I only decided on games based on their meta-critic score then I'd have missed a ton of great games. Nowadays people will be triggered by the smallest thing, and in their nerd rage they do the only thing open to them: Downvote the game without even trying it.

I actually finished the game, and halfway trough a second completionist playtrough. Yes there are microtransactoins in it, but if you don't engage in them, then sooner or later devs will see that you're not interested. The game has some flaws, but still easily wins GOTY for me.

The best way to protest microtransactions is to let the devs see that you clocked 100 hours on the game, and spent exactly 0 sum on in game purchases.

Does anyone who did this know when the game is gifted to your uplay account? I've played for a few hours through project stream, streaming is surprisingly good, but I'm ready for a higher resolution than 720p.

I have 2ms pings, no dats caps and about 450/125 line speeds. I dont really mind this transition too much for slower rts titles and single player rpgs. But for anything else, i just cant see this being a good user experience...
