Ive had to reinstall windows a couple of times this month. Ive made several attempts to keep my saves on a hard drive but it never works. I have steam on an ssd and install all the games on a seperate mechanical hard drive. Upon a fresh install, windows can locate all my old games but not the saves. Where are they?

if you play online, they are in the cloud, or should be. My saves are synced between computers almost instantly at that

Some may be synced to the cloud. Many will be saved in whatever folder that particular game saved in. Sometimes in My Documents, My games, sometimes in a folder in \users\username\appdata\roaming.

as others have said most Steam games have cloud support...but the easiest way to find them is to just do a Google search for the particular game you're looking for...for example- 'Dark Souls 3 Steam saved files location'

Games that don't use cloud saves could put the data in a variety of places:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<user_ID>
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local
C:\Users\username\AppData\LocalLow
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming
C:\Users\username\Documents
C:\Users\username\Documents\MyGames

Just to name a few. It's really annoying. Really old games might store the saves in the game directory.

Yeah, some newer games get saved on the cloud but I lost a ton of time on older titles. Guess Ill just have to scour and backup everything.

I do the same with my Steam games, I have an SSD for Steam and a mechanical with the game installs. I always grab the install folders as well as the Documents folders\subfolders in my windows profile and haven't had an issue with game saves.

I second this. I do the same thing after making the mistake of having steam installs and steam on the same drive, it really can reduce the headache.

Yeah having to not reinstall games is a huge time saver. Now I have to replay 6 hours of MGS Revengeance...
