Who is the Nintendo Switch for really?

I think they should do a refresh for better battery life and a new screen. It’s fine if they use a more powerful GPU, however it get confusing in the marketplace. Look what happened with the “New” 3DS. Very few games supported the faster hardware and more people just played normal 3DS games on it anyway.

Yeah, I have to admit they did botch the "New" 3DS stuff. The adaptive 3D was pretty cool, and the little right-stick nub thing was good for some games, but overall the improved performance wasn't utilized at all.

Hope rumors of new upgraded Switch for 2019. Wish list would be better quality screen and better portable battery life. Battery drains quick!

It also desperately needs better ergonomics in handheld mode.

Yeah, whenever I drag my Switch along with me for travel I find that I can't play well because it's uncomfortable. The buttons are packed together tightly and the analogs feel clunky. Skins and wraps can't fix that.
I've love some "alternative" joycons that are closer to what the Pro controller offers. It's already a load to lug around, so another 1/4 inch on each side isn't going to matter.

Damnit.. This thread just makes me want to play mine... Too bad it's not "mine", and it's wrapped up for my kids on Christmas...

It *will* solve a problem for me though.. No more kids on the living room TV playing the XBX...

I'm thinking about getting one for Christmas. Never even owned a Nintendo console before. But I wanna play Zelda and Super Mario Odyssey.

So you consider 6 hours is quick? Wow you have high standards.

Doesn’t a 3rd party make larger joycons? I recall seeing some, but not sure if it was just a mock up.

I really wish Nintendo would take into consideration that adults own these things lol

I started looking around this morning and it looks like there are a couple. The most appealing ones I saw appear to either no longer be on sale or they never made it to retail. The others don't look that much larger, IMO. The face buttons are still super close together so that they look like a d-pad. In an ideal world I just want the pro controller layout and sizing with the switch screen in the middle.

Same here. I appreciate that they were going for a symmetrical layout, but it just doesn’t work all that great. Hopefully we’ll see something like you described eventually

I think it was designed for small Japanese hands.

Well, it's officially for me now. I knew that I'd get one sooner or later. I was actually holding out to see what the deal was with the updated version coming in 2019. (rumored at least) However, my wife surprised me with one. I'm loving it so far. I loaded it with my favorite indie games, Mario Odyssey, BotW (since my daughters took over my save on the Wii U) Bayonetta 2 because it's one of my favorite "play it for a few minutes when I'm bored" games. I really hope they bring the remastered Zelda games from the Wii U to the Switch. I like having all those first party games in one place when possible. I suppose there's always CEMU if I really need to, but it would be better to have them on the Switch. I can't really play the original Wind Waker or Twilight Princess after playing the enhanced versions. I heard that they're bringing an updated Skyward Sword to the Switch though, so that's nice. (I love that game.)

Anyway, I'm not disappointed in the Switch in the slightest. Now I just need to pick up a pair of Pro controllers.

Any recommendations for a dock that won't destroy the main unit? The default one is fine for me, I just worry about the earlier horror stories. Not sure if that's all resolved now or not. I guess I'll go read up now that I have a vested interest. :D

If they do release a revamped version in 2019 as speculated, I'll probably grab that for myself, and make my current one the "House Switch".

You shouldn't need a secondary dock if get this item: https://www.amazon.com/amFilm-Tempered-Screen-Protector-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B01N3ASPNV/
It applies easier than most phone covers and if you put it on correctly you can't even tell it's there. You get 2 shots at it for $10, so you can even screw up once.
I think most other issues (beyond scratching the glass when docking the system) were with 3rd part docks.

Ordered some glass for it already, so good to know that's all I need. I remember reading about warping and things like that with early models. I know people with Switches that haven't had that problem, so I guessed it wasn't a big deal anymore. Thanks for confirming that.

I would not put any hopes into a new Switch being really special. If you ever bored enough and you have access to youtube lookup supermetaldave he has the best video of the new Switch and he goes pretty wild about the specs (up to PS4 power in a handheld).

I’m not expecting anything huge. Minor improvements would be just fine really, or a slant toward more portability in mind. It’s clear to me that my house needs more than one Switch though. This one is mine, but I have to fight the kids off of it.

I spilled some beer on my right joy con and now the back button is all sticky and won't click well, any thoughts?

Open it up and clean some things out with some isopropyl alcohol? Not like you have a warranty left after the liquid spill.

A few years ago I bought some 3M Anti-Static Electronic Cleaner that I've used on all sorts of things like keyboards and controllers. I just spray tons of it in/on buttons and push the buttons like crazy. It'll seep into the cracks and dissolve the sticky residue from sugary beverages. You have nothing to lose, but this stuff has worked well for me. The only knock on it is that it smells weird.

I'd second isopropyl. I'm sure the electronic cleaner can also work. Some of them can leave a light residue though, so I would use more care in where it's being sprayed. Also, if you go with the alcohol, get the higher % content like 90%+ and not the 70% or lower varieties.

Also, side note on the original topic. The Switch is officially the most used device in my house. Still have to fight the kids off of it, and I play it quite a bit myself. Mainly indie games, but also the first party stuff. I wish they'd accelerate their first party schedules, but oh well. Plenty to play on it in the meantime.

Rumors a lot lately that Nintendo is working on a new version of the Switch with an updated display. Nintendo has flat out denied they are working on new hardware. Nintendo also has a history of being compulsive liars.

If there's a rumor of a hardware update I'd believe it. When the DS came out it took them about a year and a half to come out with the DS Lite. They also said that there'd be three pillars (GameCube, GBA, and DS) which ended up with the GBA slowly dying. Then another two and a half years from DS Lite to DSi. The Gameboy Advance to GBA SP was about a year. So yeah history says they've got one in the pipeline. They don't do this to their home consoles though but all articles stating the rumor is a smaller, more portable Switch.

I couldn't justify a second Switch, but a smaller one would be my wish. I'd probably sell my current one for something smaller.
The current version is too bulky and awkward as a portable. Even shrinking the screen a bit wouldn't be a big deal. I play mine docked 100% of the time at home, so I only notice how bulky it is when I'm trying to travel with it.

A more powerful Switch is would just split their audience, so that seems like an unlikely choice.

Both options require a better handling of heat.

The reason why I am very sceptical about a "pro" version is that the other chip that Nvidia has is not much better then the one there using and still on 12/14/16nm the pie in the sky version of the "pro" has 4K support which unless that upscaler resides in the dock it will be a nightmare to cool. If upscaling content to 4K was easy everyone would have done it by now (hand held devices).

The only thing that would work is a special version of pascal a die shrink for Nintendo but Nvidia charges premium prices for those parts. So that path seems to be a dead end as well.

Some have suggested that the new version might be 1080p native screen but that somewhat kills battery duration.

I certainly hope they aren't shooting for 4K. That would be stupid for this platform at this time. I would want that if Nintendo went back to competing in the "classic" console space, but not with something like the switch. I'd rather see them pushing more effects at current resolutions, extending battery life, and maybe even other improvements to their display tech. 4K is completely unnecessary IMO for the Switch. That's just me though. I'd love to see the new switch be a bit more geared for portability really. I play mine all over the house, but I really haven't been compelled to haul it around with me. Though, I will probably bring it the next time I go on a trip.

Personally, I want slimmer bezels and less glare. I'm fine with the size for my needs (I travel globally a lot, and I love having it with me to get some game time in). More power is understandable, but those bezels and that glare really stand out to me. I do prefer playing docked, but it's a non-option when not at home.

I also agree that I don't think they're in the market for a scenario like Microsoft and Sony have with power and significant price segmentation (One S and One X, Slim and Pro).
