Boeing 737 Passenger Jet Damaged in Possible Midair Drone Hit

I'm surprised off-the-shell drones haven't been used in terrorist attacks. It seems like it would be a cheap and easy way to cause mass casualties.
Doesn't quite make the same statement when the drone operator survives now does it?

I'd just like to point out that he didn't say "brought back to idle", he said "you're at zero thrust". As I'm sure you're aware, there is a big difference between the two, idle being, well, idle, and zero thrust meaning the engines are still spooled up enough to maintain speed, without increasing it.

That is so fundamentally wrong.

Your definition is not zero thrust, it is thrust equals drag.

From startup turbo fan/jet engines are creating thrust as long as they are running. The term "zero thrust" is only used as industry jargon for flight idle descents meaning you are using your descent rate to maintain speed (overcome drag) as opposed to engine thrust. This is still not truly "zero trust" since the engines are still contributing 25ish % to 30/35% (packs/anti-ice/AT) of their rated thrust at flight idle. A loss of an engine in descent, even at flight idle, causes asymmetrical thrust and is noticeable. Its just less then at full power or 100%+ of book thrust rating.

They don't.

WHAT??? Bird strikes have most certainly caused crashes and fatalities in everything from light aircraft to helicopters to large air transport aircraft.

Drones also have the capability to damaged an aircraft to the point it loses control or the pilots are unable to handle the loss of power / control. Drones altitude should be capped to under 500' and blocked via gps from use near airports or heliports.

You might want to re read all of my post in this thread. ;)

And single engine out event can lead to crashes/ Accidents as well.

It does...unfortunately more than it should across all multi-engine types.

Related. Ran across this bird strike picture from November when thumbing through the SouthWest airborne strike incident from the 20th where a portion of the horizontal stab was damaged in a similair manner but as yet no report of organic matter in damaged area. That isn't fun.

you have given a photo without context
There is no context necessary for the fact that Mythbusters isn't even remotely scientific. They never did a single controlled test in their entire run.

Not looking forward to drones being treated similarly to firearms where you need a DROID (DRone Owners ID)
