Help with UPS (APC SMT1500 or Cyberpower PR1500ELCD?)

Hello,

I'm planning to buy an UPS to protect my NAS QNAP TVS-EC1080 and some of my electronic toys (PC with: i7-930 and motherboard x58a-ud7, GPU NVIDIA GTX285 and PSU Cooler Master G750M + anything the UPS can handle due to its limitations like monitors, router and switch).

I'm interested on the next two models, but my ignorance makes me see them as if they where exactly the same:

- Cyberpower PR1500ELCD.
- APC SMT1500.

There are not too many negative reviews with any of the both options, and the prices are very similar too (480-490€) so maybe the only difference for me is the watts available (980W with SMT and 1350W with PR1500ELCD), battery prices?, software applications and the saving system. I'm looking for the more reliable option.

What is the best choice? Is there a better alternative/option?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help and time.

Hardware wise, not a whole lot of difference between the two. The big difference is software, the APC looks like it has better linux support via apcupsd though you may have to install a different monitoring card.

The choice is up to you really.

I will admit CyberPower's utility is extremely limited and they never seem to update it, but the UPSes themselves are great. Had a good solid 5 years on one of them until the battery died, and (depending on comparing models) battery replacement has been easier with the CP over APC.

I prefer APC. I find their software to be better.

Thanks for your opinion, I'm a linux user so maybe APC is the best choice.

Thanks a lot, I'm very grateful. Do you know if the SMT series have a good Linux support? I read something about new APC models and their lack of Powerchute Linux support.And... what is the difference between SMT1500 and SMT1500i?

Thank you!! Is the "Green" power save worth the purchase?

I think the list is just confirmed working models not all models. Although as a buyer I would like to see it on the list..

what UPS have you choosed?
I have the same problem, what UPS should I buy?

The APC SmartUPS 1500 or the Cyberpower PR1500ELCD?

In terms of future upgrade the better power factor of the Cyberpower allows for greater maximum wattage, APC 1000W vs Cyberpower 1350W.
So I am tempted by the Cyberpower.

What do you think about it?

At the end I choosed the Cyberpower over the APC, APC has really too much weakness in comparison...

Cyberpower SmartUPS PR1500ELCD 1500VA/1350W arrived,
it is deadly silent even with a load of 800W (if not on battery). Most line interactive UPS are silent but transformers can be loud even on some line interactive units.

When on battery the fan curve raise with the load and the temperature but the quality YS-Tech is not that loud.

Thanks to the pure wave my AX860i stopped making that ugly noise coming from the PFC circuit when on battery.

UPS feels solid and premium, the only parts made in plastic is the front panel.
Very easy to swap the batteries, the powerpanel business edition software is amazing, there are tons of cool features for nerds and it works flawlessly on Linux :D

The unit is really really efficient with a powerfactor of 0.9, it converts pretty all of it's power in usable power. (APC is really behind in this)

Runtime is excellent, with a load of 200W (my PC idling with the monitor) it says 2 hours and 15 minutes. Transfer to battery is faster than average UPS with only 4ms.
Surge suppression is based on a series of MOVs for a total of 400 jouls that is more than enough for pretty every overvoltage you may have, leave alone lightning.

They did not spare with the components

It is a 230V unit but there is an equivalent for 110V, the 110V unit is a bit less powerful.

It isn't cheap, but it offers a lot more than the equivalent APC for the same money.

I am in the same situation, hesitating between a APC SMT1000ic and the CyberPower PR1000ELCD. (I excluded Eaton because they all have running fan)
The APC is rated 700w and the Cyber 900w...!? This is weird...

I am confused what you think is weird.

(made a mistake in my post, i was talking about the PR1000ELCD).

I mean both are 1000VA but one is 700w and the other 900w ? Why ?

Confusing. because the APC is rated the same (700w) for US or EU version.
Anyway, do you have any recommendations ? :) Cyberpower batteries seems to be cheaper, but did they last as "long".

At work I have had server grade units from both manufacturers fail (usually after 5+ years) however I don't have 100s of each so I can't really say much about that. I would purchase either.

ive been using the same apc ups for over ten years. replaced the batteries once. its probably due for another change pretty soon. im likely going to go with cyberpowers 1500/900 sinewave unit when i get another. ive been saying that for the last 3 years tho.

I buy APC UPSs since 20 years now.
At the end I admitted that APC is completely a mess in the last years in the PC segment.
Sincerely I'm completely in love with my PR1500ELCD from Cyberpower now, it feels so premium, great software even on linux, incredible power factor for pretty no wasting in energy consumption and incredible amount of power (1350W) with a runtime that is simply giant.

Cyberpower are ~100€ less than the APC if u order on german shops, but did you find a source for genuine replacement batteries ? I can only find them on the cyberpower US site.

If you have say a PC and a NAS on the UPS, do you need two usb cables for the UPS to alert the devices of power loss, or it can be done by the network. ?

if you write them they will guide you through official reseller.
in any case really no need for official reseller, just buy two batteries, connect them with the connector that you diassembly from the old batteries and you are set.
few screws and the job is done (for a lot less money)

Second this, no need to pay high markup for "official" replacements.

SLA batteries are a commodity just like their outdoor counterparts, as long as you buy from a good supplier it just needs to be the right size and connectors. Some of the sizes are extremely common (12V 7Ah for example) and used in tons of different things.

You can fudge upwards on capacity somewhat but depends on how good the charging circuit on the UPS is.

OK i see.

Cyberpower doesn't seems interested in selling replacement batteries in EU. They are absolutely nowhere to be found in online shops. Surprising, i thought that would be something highly profitable for UPS makers.
I found a mention on the DE site, they tell to contact them for quote, but on UK site nothing. (and the FR site is a reseller who rebrand them).

Not a way to compete with APC.

Figure out what batteries are used. Usually these are batteries used in a variety of applications from alarm systems to lighting and UPSs. I never buy APC or Cyberpower branded batteries. 12V 7Ah or 9Ah are very common in consumer units with larger 12V 18 Ah batteries in server grade UPSs. You can easily reuse the wiring harness from the old batteries.

Thank everyone i will just have to think a bit more and decide between 750 and 1000. (size constraint)
