I have a i7 2600k that I would like to setup for my 12yo. What would be a decent but fairly simple (safe?) board for doing a little overclocking. Would be nice if it supported 32GB ram. Hes doing various things video editing and some CAD work would appreciate the space. Assume for now it will be air cooled and once he figures a few things out (and does a bit of yard work) will step up up to water cooling. Any advice of what to look at (or stay away from) is welcomed.

You will be hard pressed to find many new 1150 motherboards at this point. It is very long in the tooth at this point. I'm still rocking my 2600k and it works just fine for casual gaming. I did a searching and there are a few new boards to be found but nothing really enthusiast class, at least for a reasonable dollar amount. The better featured boards will run over $200 and you will want to find one that has 4 ram slots which should get you the 32GB ram support you are looking for. Take a look at amazon or even newegg for 1150 motherboards. Good luck!

Alli express will probably have something refurbished cheap. Otherwise its not worth it

Find a Asus Maximus Hero VII v97 chipset.

I've got one in a box along with a i7 4970k that ran stock most of its life but did run it at s time at 4.6ghz. Original owner bought from microcenter.

Used for about a year and upgraded and used it for a system for my at the time 8 year old son got some gaming along with a evga 1080 classified.

Upgraded him a year later to my 6700k system when I upgraded again along with a evga 1080ti hybrid. He's now 9 hehe.

Anyways he never uses the system.. as he now plays with kids from school online on the ps4 and xbox one. :/

Dont know if I'm a seller or not but open as I should be.

I say sell the 2600k, which still goes for over $100, and pick up a Ryzen 3 and motherboard. Depending on the motherboard you choose you could end up spending less or more, but you will have a better system, with newer tech available, that will also easily be upgradable by dropping in a new CPU.

A 2600k is a socket 1155 processor....

Find a used board here on the forums. A P67 or Z77 chipset should work I think... Still rocking my P67... These boards can be tough to O/C with 4 dimms and I am not sure the P67's supported 32GBs ram. What does you kids machine need 32GB ram anyways :)
