Citing a paywalled report from the Financial Times, Reuters reports that Qualcomm is asking courts to ban the iPhone XS and XR from sale in China. The company apparently gained confidence from its win on Monday, and claims it intends to use the same patents against Apple's newer phones and operating systems.

The case, brought by Qualcomm, is part of a global patent dispute between the two U.S. companies that includes dozens of lawsuits. Apple said on Monday that all of its phone models remained on sale in mainland China and that it had filed a request for reconsideration with the court, the first step in a long appeal process that could end up at China's Supreme Court. Apple had also said its three models released in September were not part of the case. Qualcomm and Apple did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.

The courts in China are very much an extension of the state. With the current government upset at the United states over the CFO arrest, Apple could easily find itself losing normally easy cases.

I don't see why they would care. It's two American tech companies bickering over patents.

...unless they can find a way to steal more intellectual property out of the deal...

I think you should re-read his post to understand why they would care; if you didn't understand CFO arrest, look up the story involving Huawei's daughter and CFO being arrested for allegedly selling to Iranians.

You screw us over here by attacking Huawei, we screw you over there by attacking Apple. Tic-for-tac. It's quite likely as governments and politicians can both be prideful and petty. No offense to politicians.

I'm well aware of the Huawei issue. However, the narrow scope of this judgment is essentially a non-issue. It doesn't affect the most recent phones. And from what I've read it isn't even being enforced. It would be one thing if all Apple phones were affected. It's another when only a narrow subset are.

In the grand scheme, this is a blip on the radar. The real threat in the Huawei arrest is the supply chain of many electronics.

Oh look Qualcomm is still butthurt over Apple not wanting to use their chips anymore.

They are trying to ban the sell of legacy phones that still use Qualcomm chips. They have been filing legal paperwork left and right over here in the states as well, trying to prevent Apple from dropping them completely. If it wasn't for the fact that they actually design some of this stuff, Qualcomm would be the biggest patent troll ever.

Member when murka's kangaroo courts helped Apple block out Samsung?
