im selling my laptop for $200. i have it listed on craigslist as well as here. i get an email from this dude that asks me what the best price i could give him would be. i tell him $190. he responds with this,
Hope you're honest with the post,i want it for my pastor in California am offering you the total sum of $200 including the shipping fee and am paying upfront do you have a PayPal account?

no idea what the scam may be but im feeling like this cat is trying to pull something. im not comfortable giving him my paypal addy or anything else for that matter. what do you all think?

this was my response, i would rather you checked it out in person and paid in cash. i dont want to ship it and i dont like dealing with paypal. sorry.

and his response(instantly),
ok sorry. i do use paypal.

yeah this is a scam. im sure hes trying to get access to my paypal account somehow. his phone number is 676 area code which is counrty code for Tonga...yeah that one hahaha. its also the ac for Baha CA.

no i didnt do it. as soon as i said i would rather he looked at it himself and pay cash he quit the conversation. it really surprised me until i went to the CL scam section and it said to never use paypal. im just curious as to how he would go about committing the scam if someone were to give him their paypal addy? i reported it to CL but ive no idea if anything will come of it.

I'm sure he will pay but the money will get taken back from you once it's shown to be fraudulent.

Probably stolen credit card number linked to throw away PayPal account.

Every time I post something on cl I get a text from non local number. Doesn't even specify the item just says your electronics for sale. Feels like about sending the message. Wants me to contact an email address. Yeah right

right, as soon as he said it was for his pastor i just shook my head and laughed. i can see how someone could fall for it tho. there are niave trusting people that i could see getting roped into giving their paypal info.

thats exactly what i thought. he would somehow do a charge back or it was paid for with a stolen account or something equally sleezy.

I think you're onto something bigger here. How did this cat come across that sum of money? Where is this cat getting online access, and how is it intelligent enough to use it? Most importantly, is its' pastor also a cat?

> i want it for my pastor

IT'S FOR CHURCH HONEY. NEXT!! (for those of you from r/ChoosingBeggars)

Remember, cash only with CraigsList.

> Great now the pastor's daughter is crying because I promised her she could have the laptop, you monster!

Hacked paypal accounts. Darkweb, people sell hacked paypal accounts that havent been used in a while.
Nigerian (or Tonga in this case) scammers buy the hacked account, darkweb seller gives them a login, a password and sometimes even the original browser cookies file from the owners laptop to overwrite into scammers browser cookies (prevents paypal from asking for 2-Step Verification for larger payment $ scams) .

They send you a 200 dollar payment from the original dudes credit card.

Original dude eventually sees the charge (either immediately or a few weeks down the line), knows its not him, immediately opens a dispute for unauthorized use and the 200 gets charged back.

BONUS, he may ask your paypal email to send the funds to and send you a spoofed fake paypal email to "login" because you've received funds and then pull some shit on your paypal. I mean 1/2 the people on craigslist are idiots and teens/people in early twenties, young and dumb.

They wouldnt be doing it if the scams didnt work.

scam.

I put in all my craigslist ads "include the city/town you are coming from in the email to weed out spam" and I just ignore every email I get without that. If they can't follow that simple instruction, it's either a scam or someone incompetent.

take the money, put a rock in the box and send it

NO PAYPAL!
NEVER PAYPAL!
FRIENDS DON'T LET ANYBODY USE PAYPAL!

cash only.

meet at local police station.

Or a bank lobby. Chase/Bank of america/WellsFargo lobbies are super inviting and chill. I've done tons of trades there, and no idiot is gonna try to rob you inside a bank lmao.

I only say that because some people live a bit far from a police station they can use but there's a good sized bank on damn near every major intersection.
