WTF 2080 cards are $800+ ?

I am looking to upgrade from my GTX 1070, to maybe a RTX 2080 ( not the bonfire Ti card )

But what the heck, the regular 2080's are frigging $800 ? Jesus. I thought they'd be like $599 max.

I've been buying video cards since the Voodoo card days 20 years ago, and forver it seems top end cards were in the $600 or so price range. And the 2070 type cards would be in the $500 or so range.

Why the F is the 2080 a outrageous $800 ?

I recall paying 320 for a Canopus Pure3D 6MB that translates to just over 500 dollars today and that price was enormous. Imagine paying 761 in 1997. That would be the equivalant for the 2080 TI. 800? 1200? They are not on the proper price curve and I will pass.

Vega 64 could have been that card if all of it features could of been enabled. It could well of had an extra 30% performance on top of what it has now.
The extra features had to be implemented by game developers and if you listen back to the interview that Scott Wason had with Redgaming Tech about Vega he named a few but none of those where he said they were game changers.
The reason why AMD does not have anything is due to budget AMD has been strapped for cash in the preceding years and making a gpu is not instant so the problems that were going on were only masked by using HBM (Vega) for the short coming of the design.

Zorachus Don't worry about AMD having nothing competitive it won't happen for a good few years from now and only mid range products will likely see the daylight.

Yes, I understood about the game developer support being needed. But I must have missed the part about not being game changers. Thanks for the correction.

You haven't been following the RTX saga very closely have you? Worst bang for the buck video cards ever.

2080 Ti $1200
2080 $800
2070 $500

So the 2070 is the most 'reasonably' priced out of the entire RTX lineup.

Long Live the GTX1080/Grx1080TI

Yeah nVidia loves super high margins, especially since it has no competition. The only hope any consumer has is intel bringing competition in 2020 and beyond. I've never had any faith in AMD, there is always pure hype behind their gpus that inevitably leave people disappointed.

All companies love high margins. If you bring out a new product, price it reasonable, see a three month backlog and the product is being sold on Ebay 25% more expensive, you’ve priced your product too low. Do I like it? Nope and I won’t buy into it either as long as I have no need for it. My 1080ti runs my simulators at 60fps+ on a 4k tv and Rift just fine. Market forces will bring these prices back down to earth in a few cycles unless we all remortgage our homes and buy anyway. Nvidia got greedy but I don’t have to play along. It looks like the higher rez Rift2 won’t be here any time soon either so no need to upgrade until 8k monitors become a must have. Spouses all around the world can let out a sigh of relief because the bi-anual GPU upgrade cycle is broken!

Just an update but Newegg is now selling the RTX 2080 for $699 for ASUS and Gigabyte flavors and an MSI model that is $679 after $20 mail in rebate.

Out of those models, the Gigabyte GV-N2080WF3-8GC with the triple fan solution at $699 looks like the best bargain among those thanks to its increased triple fan cooling performance.

Considering that the 2080 goes neck and neck with the 1080 Ti which is now inflated to $1000 on Newegg, that makes these cards relatively attractive buy for now.

Buying a used 1080 Ti on Ebay is still a better bargain overall, but for new cards the RTX 2080 becomes viable at the $699 price point.

This is a clear sign of lack of demand. If prices are going down, it's because no one is buying them.

Well if you own a 1080 Ti already, there is ZERO need to 'upgrade' to the 2080. If you are running 9xx series or older, then this could be a worthwhile upgrade. Either way, lower prices is a good thing.

Worthwhile? If it actually works and does not die. I would hold out until there is a fix for the problem.

I have two 1080tis from the mining days left over. Way overkill for my needs, but yeah i dont see any value in these RTX cards. a few weeks ago i was seeing 2nd hand 1080ti sell for $360 on ebay after coupon. Rather take my chances on a used mining card then a new RTX especially considering the price gap.
