Microsoft Is Replacing Edge in Windows 10 with a Chromium-Based Web Browser

This is good news, Edge had only a couple things going for it - mainly better video acceleration and quicker data loading (in some scenarios) vs. Chrome. Overall though, Chrome wins on compatibility and javascript execution speed. If Microsoft can incorporate their pluses into a chromium-based web-browser (and still retain a solid IE compatibility mode for the old, crappy MS-standards-built web pages that will never get updated), they could hopefully go back to a single web browser instead of a bastardized IE11/Edge scenario.

The main takeaway here for end users should be...

Just run chromium.

Not sure how much of a pain it is for windows users to self compile things like widevine for DRM (netflix) playback. For Linux users though chromium is in every distros repos... and widevine in most.

So now we are back to options of Firefox and Firefox at work. Great.

Well at least Chrome has group policy support when running a domain controller like we do at work which Firefox unfortunately doesn't. The biggest hinderance to Firefox is extension control support for clients which could potentially be a security issue.

makes perfect sense with the direction MS has had over the last 5ish years. They are the largest OSS contributor in the tech industry. Still surprised people dont get that.

Rollout in first half of 2019? Ok. Will the Win10 auto update just delete Edge, or will this new browser be installed in parallel to Edge, and be a user option?

One of the first things I do after a fresh Win10 install is change the default browser to IE...

I have used Firefox for years. I started running into a few problems with it on my PC and phone, maybe around the time the new version came out. I switched to Chrome, but it doesn't block video/audio from auto playing and it was very annoying. Edge added blocking auto play media last month so I have been using it since. Haven't ran into any sites that wouldn't work properly and blocking auto play media is just something I can't do without.

The only annoying thing about Edge is you can't have it sync with Edge on your phone unless you use a Microsoft account to login to Windows 10.
