Tumblr Bans All Porn from Its Service

Sometimes I feel so behind when it comes to social media. I've heard of Tumblr but I have no idea what it is.
Well, the first thing to know is that while Reddit screws heavily towards men and is largely texts, facts and info graphics, Tumblr is its counter.

It largely skews towards women, has almost no text and is mostly just a series of blog posts that are picture one shares or likes. So you might make a Tumblr account dedicated to Supernatural the TV show.

You then look at the Supernatural tag or tag of the lead actors names. This would give you a wall of photos. Find especially hot pictures of the guy shirtless and then reshare it hoping to get filled) followed by Supernatural fans. Other people might find your blog too and reshare stuff of it.

It's the digital equivalent of hanging photos of hot guys or cool fashion you wish you owned you found in magazines on your bedroom wall. No real useful content. Just fluff photos.

So the opposite of Reddit which is more like a symposium.

This reminds me of a pub down my road. It always catered to large bus parties, football supporters. 30-50 folks turning up at a time.

They then banned them wanting to change direction and go more family orientated. It closed down 8 months later.

Know your market and customers.

They had people that like porn and people that didn't, now they'll only have people that don't like porn. This is creating more diversity?

Maybe they meant they'll remove porn and create more diversity by offering [lesbian,gay,trans,bi,etc.]-porn.

This is the begging of the end for pr0n on mainstream sites (and by extension search engines). There is a push to 'cleanse' the internet and make it a safe space for new emerging markets.

No loss, no one wants to see fat but comfortable with their body, green haired chicks nude anyhow.

If it's one thing I've learned about sex in my lifetime, it's those that publicly say they hate something about sex, that are the ones that love it/do it the most! ;):D

And if its one thing ive learned about what you learned is that often those people are repulsed by their own sordid thoughts and project onto others.

Blue or red hair usually does it for me.

I dunno, I just can't really get it off on a girl I absolutely know would tell me to get out. The ones I could image are at least a maybe or after a drink or two think I am hot, those work better :p

Porn? I thought it was all animated gifs from harry potter and buffy the vampire slayer mixed with chicks posting about knitting...

Creating a more diverse community...by banning large groups of their community?

Who are they trying to court, devout Christians? Chinese or Arab governments?
ios users...

Advertisers
no they would have left porn alone for that just kept it behind an age wall like it should have been... rather than sack 70-90% of the traffic they had... i give them 2 days before they undo this or get acquired by another company.

It's your platform, do as you wish, but please lets stop using the word "diversity" as the rationalization for things.

And here I'm still unsure what the hell tumblr is and how it fits into the social media ecosystem.

Shit, I thought that Tumblr only had porn or nudes. What else is it used for?

Good, I hated having to go onto that travesty of a platform to download NSFW skyrim outfits back in the day. Now when elderscrolls 6 comes out and I want to slap a BDSM boob physics outfit on a character I will hopefully be able to find it on a platform that doesn't blow

That makes sense. If they are already failing at keeping this off their network, it is only a matter of time before they are in court over it, so it is probably easier to just blanket filter anything porn related to overreact but be safer. Especially if they are found generating money from child porn even if unintentional could be disastrous.
so banning all nudity except artistic nudity is better? no this is a knee jerk to a bully over something they already DO NOT allow on the platform. it would make more sense to revamp the filters and require uploaders to register with a verifiable address then to ban nudity in this way

What a shitty job, the person adding kiddie pron to the filter system and having to evaluate all the reports. That would probably screw me up in the head, plus hate people even more.

yes and that is precisely the reason the bulk of that job is done by machine the issue here is that they had the filter in place and it failed you don't eliminate over half your active user base because of that shit you fix the filter.

but here is the fix uploaders can not upload without a real name and address on the account if illegal material is uploaded to the account personal info is available for the police to come arrest the uploader simple easy not a huge deal. Instead ok guys time to bleach the servers we found a few stray photos that got past the filter.

Interesting how the people that claim to be so "progressive" and "Free Minded" and "Diverse" and "Tolerant" and "Accepting of everyone" pretty much decide they want to be some Fundamentalist Christian Prudes when it comes to the human body.

There is a lot of other things on Tumblr that might be a fair bit more pressing rather than naked humans.

Could also be a company direction change. They are aware of the loss it will bring and did it anyways. Maybe they have a new plan instead of being known for porn and gifs. I dunno.

No, they asked for it by designing it the way they did.

Let's say someone posts illegal porn on their tumblr and it gets reported. Common sense would be that the post and any reposts are removed right? No, just that instance was removed. If you deactivate an account, shouldn't the reposts of your content go down too? Not on Tumblr. And even if you did manage to get every instance removed, the posts still exist so that others can find similar content.

That's not even counting the sites that were not listed as NSFW to avoid filtering. So if you have a child porn problem, but by design you can't get rid of every instance or the deleted instances still being beacons for similar content, what else can they do but nuke it? The ecosystem had to change.

Do we have actual stats on how much it’s used for porn? My guess is like 50-90% of all tumblr pages.

How will they pay the bills?
