Starbreeze has filed for reconstruction in Swedish court to protect the company while it negotiates a long-term financial solution. Filing for "bankruptcy" will allow the company to create necessary changes in the organization and operations without having to immediately pay debts accrued before the filing. Bo Andersson has left his post as CEO and both he and Kristofer Arwin have resigned from the Starbreeze Board of Directors. This looks especially bad for the StarVR HMD as we reported the ultimatum that Acer gave its StarVR division last week. Starbreeze maintains a 33% stake in StarVR. The development of PayDay 3 could be affected also.

As communicated on 23 November 2018, the board of directors has mandated executive management to review operation and the company has initiated a program to lower costs and focus on its core business. However, with the latest statistics from Overkill's The Walking Dead (including effects from latest marketing efforts) affecting the forecasted sales, it has reduced the short term forecasted revenue resulting in an expected shortfall of cash in January 2019. The financial targets for Q4 2018 and 2020 no longer applies.

well if you release a 20$ game but sell it for 60$, guess what it won't sell, and guess what burning half of he developement cost into marketing won't help if your game isn't good and polished enough.
and lastly designing the game to be absurdly grindy and repetitive to force gamer's hand into micro transaction is a good repellent for gamers.

So I just bought the Walking Dead only to find out there are probably not be updates to fix the game and no one is playing online....

The original PayDay is one of my favorite games of all time. By the time I was ready to play PayDay 2 Id heard theyd thoroughly minced it with microtransactions. Not sure if I should feel nostalgic or be delivering a middle finger and saying good riddence.

The Walking Dead beta was so bad, that I don't care that they fall through. It's a poorly managed money grab.

I always wanted a real sequel to Escape from Butcher Bay. Easily Starbreeze's best game by far. Been over 14 years since that game. PayDay 1 and 2 often got played at LANParties, but I never really fucked with them too much on my own. PayDay 2 really turned into a big microtransaction fest. I heard some good things about The Darkness but I never really checked it out myself. Well it looks like Starbreeze has seen better days. Would be awesome if they could recover, team up with Tigon again, and come back hard with a Riddick sequel. Not holding my breath though.

Is Tigon Studios even still around? I think Vin buried that one when IP coming out of it wasn't being very successful. Seems that, as always, people in the film industry have absolutely no idea what makes a video game company successful because they conflate the two as being similar.

I got The Darkness 2 for $3 during a Steam summer sale years ago, it wasn't bad for what it was, but it sure was no Escape from Butcher Bay!

The last game I heard about from Tigon was Riddick: The Merc Files which was a mobile game for the iPhone. No idea how well it did since I don't own one.

The Darkness 2 was made by Digital Extremes, not Starbreeze. The first game was a console exclusive.
