A source with 9to5Google has revealed that Google Hangouts will be deprecated sometime in 2020. While the brand will live on through the enterprise-oriented Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet, 2019 will be the final year for the legacy, consumer version. “Google essentially ceased development on the app more than a year ago.”

Google’s Scott Johnston has chimed in and denies that any decisions have been made about the timeline of legacy Hangouts’ shutdown. Confusingly, however, he says that users of consumer Hangouts users will be somehow “upgraded” to Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet, both being enterprise-focused products that fill different needs. Meanwhile, a second source has since corroborated my initial report, and says decisions have indeed been made for the deprecation of legacy Hangouts.

this is why I have remained cautious with the google ecosystem... they come out with a great product, I start to rely on it daily and then 2-3 years later they stop supporting it and come out with a new program with a completely different interface... :(

People get mad at Microsoft for shutting down apps and changing names all the time, but man Google just can't seem to keep good thing going unless it is search or YouTube. That being said Google Duo does work pretty well as a Facetime competitor. It is just that people look at you strange if you ask them if they have it setup.

Not to mention additional licenses, TOS, and fees.

I stopped using Hangouts ages ago anyways
I use hangouts for voice calls on my cell. If they boot me I guess I'll have to attempt to port the number to that other voip service I've been paying for...

Wait, so what has officially replaced hangouts? Can Allo do wifi calling like hangouts dialer? Does it integrate google voice? I don't think it does.
Google should not have 5 freggin apps to do one thing. Allo, duo, hangouts dialer, hangouts, android messaging. Why can't they just design one app, not half ass it, and you know, actually take responsibility and support an app for more than 3 years?

Its google half assing everything thats not android, maps, search and gmail. Literally everything "new" they do is a copy of something else thats half assed and only supported for more than one or two years if it has immediate traction. I wouldn't trust google for anything these days though. The days where you could reasonably trust/depend on google to be a decent company is over.

I think google is betting on Android Messages with RCS to become the new hangouts. Dunno why google still has google hangouts in gmail...
