Apple is getting sued again for devices that are allegedly defective: this time, the company failed to install vent filters in their MacBooks and iMacs, leading to “lower processor speeds and screen smudges from trapped dust, which result in expensive repairs for consumer.” The affected models were produced between 2013 and 2018.

Several plaintiffs are named in the lawsuit, including a photographer who was plagued by dark spots on her Mac's display, a user who had smudges on his iMac who was required to pay $600 for a replacement after five months, and a third iMac owner who saw dark smudges soon after making a purchase and subsequently had his display and motherboard replaced multiple times, leading to high repair bills.

Just drill some holes in it and call it good.

Oops, you bought that Mac for aesthetics, didn't you? Well we decided you didn't really need a second mouse button, universal charging port, battery port, USB port, headphone jack, venting, etc. Too messy!

If you are a masochist that likes to throw money away to be abused like that by Apple, you get what you pay for.

Jokes aside, dust in your display is extremely annoying and isn't a new problem. Are they just taking their eye off the ball in keeping old issues resolved?

Apple seems to want you to upgrade regularly.

Really regularly.

Holy shit, this used to happen on their icomputer slab screen things back in 2009 or so. They didn't seal the inside layer of the glass and it's porous, so can be marked by things as simple as cigarette smoke or dust. Place I used to work had that come in more than a few times.

I know I've had to take my employer provided MacBook Pro's apart over the years to clean out the fans and heat sinks. Can always tell its time when I keep having high fan speeds when not doing much of anything. I would certainly be nice to have a removable screen you could pull out and clean... I put a magnetic dust screen over the back of my pc's CPU intake fan and its done wonders.

Back in '09 my boss bought a mac mini. After 6 months he started having problems with his keyboard. Before figuring out the USB was killing devices, he lost $250 worth of keyboards (he had some very fancy ones). The "Genius" bar told him they would replace the mobo. After 2 weeks he went to pick it up and they told him they found "dust" inside the mac mini (not hair or smoke - besides, it was a smoke-free, cat-free home) and they had voided his warranty. The best they could do was 10% off a new mac mini, which my boss, an Apple fan, bought.
I was pulling my hair when he was describing the situation. I mean, Apple is responsible for the design and they never add dust filters, which is why the can't add "dust" in their warranty restrictions, and they don't. And then if they see you are a fan, they will use it to screw you over even well inside warranty!
That's just one example, as it was the one related to dust, I have many, many more...
Microsoft was the traditional "evil" company back in the day, but they were pussycats compared to the Apple racket...

Apple have got really really sloppy over the past 5 years. More so than usual.

Time to ditch Ive and get a proper engineer/designer in.

Replacement motherboard(s) for screen smudges?

Does not compute.
It's business as usual. This should be in memes by now.

user: the touchpad doesn't work on my mac
gb: It's got water damage, and we need to replace your gpu, motherboard, and display screen it will be $ 3800 and 3.5 weeks wait. Or you can just buy the new model for $4000. And throw this junk into the trash! We are so eco-friendly, aren't we?
user: isn't the gpu part of the motherboard?
gb: STFU! User's cannot diagnose or repair apple products, it is genius level stuff, that no mere mortal could fathom.
