Earlier this week, scientists in China claimed they produced the world's first genetically edited babies. While many assumed the work was legal in China, the Chinese government begs to differ. Xu Nanping, the vice-minister for science and technology, reportedly told CCTV that the researchers "blatantly violated China's relevant laws and regulations." While some meaning is certainly lost in translation, the report seems quite unequivocal, claiming that the "clinical operation of genetic editing for human embryos is strictly prohibited in our country." The rest of the Google translated release is below, and it sounds like the scientists are in legal hot water.

It is shocking and unacceptable. We are resolutely opposed. The Ministry of Science and Technology has requested the relevant units to suspend the scientific and technological activities of the relevant personnel. The next step of the Ministry of Science and Technology will, on the basis of comprehensive and objective investigation of the incidents, and the relevant departments to investigate and deal with them according to laws and regulations.

Until they start using genetic engineering to create an army of 10 million obedient super soldiers.
Beat me to something like it ^.
Are you sure China, couldn't you use a few hundred million of obedient citizens so you don't waste all that money keeping your populace in check!?

We might be one of the last non genetic engineered humans generation. Probably wont make much difference to the ones in our 30+ but our kids might grow old as the inferior old humans. Or everything is just going to be rl Japanese tentacle porn who knows?

It's too late for us as humans to do anything about this now that the "knowledge" genie is out of the bottle.

If a person is wealthy enough, there's nothing stopping some doctor out there - whether it's this particular Chinese guy or someone else entirely - from working to make a privately funded "custom" baby on some island or some non-extradition country out there!

What was the Matt Damon movie which had a future with the rich folks living in space with magic tech? While poor folks lived on earth?

I dunno, deep inside I think this is important research. This is another 'future idea' that we've been waiting for, although it feels creepy now that it is here. I admit I can see many dangers, but I can also see a lot of benefits.

I am against people selectively choosing the traits of their child, but I also realize that society needs to get control of its extremes before MakerBots are able to make nuclear weapons.

Selective breeding would likely eliminate the flavor of humanity. A friend hypothesized that under a controlled breeding program, a real human being like Ted Nugent might never be born. And that's too bad, because, like him or not, on a tired, cold night when you have a long way to drive and nothing to listen to but an AM/FM radio, hearing Wang Dang Sweet Poontang (NSFW) from a dusty radio station might save your life.

Yeah they're working so hard to keep them locked down, this might be a solution.

Kinda off topic, but I've always thought that the stuff we actually hear about is likely 10-20 years behind what the government actually knows. Call me paranoid but ...

Well that guy will have a slow death once his social score goes to zero. Then get scooped up for the camps
You do realize that everyone who posts on the [H]ard forums starts with a social score of zero and every post makes it go further negative, don't you? o_O

Sure. The Ministry of Truth... er Science says this, while they quietly confiscate his research and make him work for the government, developing Chinese super-soldiers.

I'm guessing it's really less about condemning the scientists' work, and more about condemning the scientists' work getting leaked. It was suppose to be secret, so that in 20 years, the upper echelon of Chinese authority would just happen to be physically jacked and all happen to have 280+ IQs.

Doesn't matter that much. Genetic engineering is silly and ineffective compared to cyborgs. Or just forget about humans and go straight to machines, much better.
