While I'm still a pc gamer, I recently got into tabletop gaming. I love the social part of it, although I prefer more mature games.

I currently own:
Mansions of madness 2nd edition
Eldritch Horror
Massive Darkness
Deep Madness
Just backed Deep Madness reprint on Kickstarter.
+ I have expansions for all those games.

As you can see I am a big fan of thematic Lovecraftian horror.
What are your favorites?

I have played many boardgames/tabletop games over the years. Here are some of my current favorites:

Hex Hex
Imperial Assault
X-Wing/Armada
Scythe
Warhammer 40k Kill Team
Bloodbowl
Infinity
Epic Tiny Galaxies
Dice Throne
Red Dragon Inn
Resistance/Coup
Cards Against Humanity

Used to play Battletech many years ago. Thankfully the recent PC game from Harebrained Studios has been a great interpretation of it.

I've been getting into tabletop games more as my kids have gotten older. The best of what we've played are:

Catan
Terraforming Mars
Pandemic
Betrayal at House on the Hill

I tried to get them to play D&D with me too, but I think they still think it's too nerdy.

I played a TON of Hero Quest when I was around 10. (had all the expansions)

Then I moved up to Warhammer Quest. (bought it at release in '96, I think it's worth quite a bit now)

I'd LOVE to break it out and play.... But no one I know is willing to roll that many die heh

Now, I have a nice glass chess set on the living room coffee table. It's a staple to play during "movie-time" with the S/O.

I played a ton of Warhammer Quest back in the day. I have played the new one a few times, but its not quite the same as the old. I think the older version is better tbh.

That's the word on the street and why I never bothered to check it out.... smh

Oh...this is the realm of my interests. I own over 100 of them. I have an acquisition problem. :(

I should be receiving my Kickstarted Fireball Island soon. I do own a 100% original copy...along with some other stuff. I would post a picture of my collection but I'm at work. I bought Ikea shelves in order to store them.

If you're looking for something along the lines of Warhammer Quest, I might recommend Descent or Sword and Sorcery.

Uh....Magic the Gathering, Aggravation & Yahtzee or just plain old poker.

Try Kingdom Death: Monster if you love the horror games, warning the art direction is not for everyone.

Played a lot of Warhammer and 40k until games workshop destroyed them. Edit: because someone usually complains or levels accusations over wealth (it's an expensive game) we used the bases and just put cardboard with writing on them for the units. It worked particularly well for the regiment gameplay of fantasy. This also allowed us to screw around with army builds, honestly other than astetic I think it made the game more fun.

Like the flight system games (xwing, imperial assault, arkham horror)

Just picked this hobby up again after a several year hiatus.

I used to play Mtg, but once my friends i played with stopped I kind of stopped, did continue to collect some for a while longer, the problem with those games is you need other people to play with which I Always have problems with.

I tried to get into regular Warhammer but I quickly realized after the first like $200; as a 12 year old kid I could never afford it..

I still have a bunch of White Dwarf mags in the same big box as all my old PC Gamer / CGW stuff.

Speaking of.... Painting miniatures. I wish I could go back in time and tell 12 year old me: "Don't piss away 3 months of mowing lawns on paints you'll use ONCE."

Yep, use card board, its fun, and you can test out armies so if you ever do drop the like 3k on a full army it costs these days, at least you'll enjoy it. that is until they creep the edition up and break your army, which is why we walked away.

I checked it out, but damn, they're asking $400 for it.

It is worth it, huge box, lots of models, the monsters are excellent. The game is fantastic, good review of it on board game geeks. I know it's a lot, but I've never played anything like it.

I looked at some of the reviews and almost pulled the trigger, but then I saw the plastic models you can add and they are called like "Wet Nurse" with a "nightmare breast pump" item, another miniature has a "thong" item. I'm not sure what to think. This game looks like it's 18+ and for hentai fans.
If you ignore that, the models do look fantastic.

As I'm intimately familiar with games out of Catalyst Game Labs...

BattleTech
Shadowrun: Crossfire (Shadowrun themed deck-building game)
Dragonfire (D&D themed deck building game)
The Duke / The Jarl (Two versions of a chess/checkers/shogi-like tile flipping game.)
Vikings (Yes, tied into the show, as is The Jarl)
Wrath of Dragons: Resource destruction game
If you can find a copy of it, Leviathans. Flying iron-sides battleship. Steampunk. Basic rules are freely available online.
Masters of Orion: MoO Deck-builder.
Valiant (Valiant Universe, superheroes) Deck-builder
If you can still find it (usually EBay), Hex-A-Gon
If you can find it, Balance of Power. Napoleonic combat and resource management in Europe. Similar to Risk.

If you're looking for actual RPG, there's also the BattleTech: A Time of War, for BattleTech-themed RPG.
Shadowrun: Cyberpunk + Magic
Valiant: Super Heroes
Cosmic Patrol: Pulp 50's sci-fi. Rockets & ray guns.

Those models are junk, they add nothing to the game, the creator has some issues IMHO. That being said, in the base model pack, the humans are all normal, the armor sets are fully realized (you can build full sets of models.for everything from cloth to full armor and all uniques).

You basically manage a village through the random events of the game, trying to keep your population up while characters die. As one dies you pick another villager to take their place on the front line. Theres a hunting phase to go looking for resources and hunt a monster like monster Hunter, and a combat phase where the opponent is played by a randomized deck of cards. A village management phase, and throughout events are sprinkled.

If you can get past the ugh bits, it's a great game with friends.

I just ordered the game and some expansions and additional characters. $650 for a tabletop game. It seems to be quite fun though.

would you recommend anything for a table top games newbie? Something that wouldn't last for a 5 hours

I've been playing Pathfinder on tuesdays, been pretty fun.

Still just level 1 after 3 sessions, but its fun.

Settlers of Catan is always a good choice. It's pretty easy to learn.
Ticket to Ride is also pretty easy and fun.
