That's kinda cool, but I wouldn't trust my soldering skills lol...
Soldering isn't really that hard so long as your vision is alright and your hands are reasonably steady; shouldn't take much practice to get good at it. As far as those kits go, they're made up of relatively large parts so that makes it easier (as apposed to soldering in IC's and whatnot).

I've done my own pickup swapping, it could have been my gun, but getting clean joints that weren't "cold" was a pain in the ass.

Well, the three things I did wrong when I first started were a) not tinning the iron (who knew? lol) b) not pre-heating the parts I'm soldering and c) blowing on it to cool it. After that it seemed to go well for me.

P.S. Oh, and don't use silver bearing solder - it will about triple the chances of a cold solder joint.
