According to AP, researchers have made the world's first gene-edited babies in China. The twin girls, who's names remain anonymous, had their genomes edited by CRISPR to give them natural resistance to the HIV virus. Naturally, this has sparked considerable controversy around the world, as the practice is banned in the U.S. and other countries. But, while cloning is illegal in China, they have no laws against genetically edited babies at this time. Interestingly, TechCrunch reports that a hospital involved in the claims has denied any involvement, and other media publications are reporting similar discrepancies.

Check out the video report here.

He Jiankui (HEH JEE'-an-qway), who goes by "JK," studied at Rice and Stanford universities in the U.S. before returning to his homeland to open a lab at Southern University of Science and Technology of China in Shenzhen, where he also has two genetics companies. The university said He's work "seriously violated academic ethics and standards" and planned to investigate. A spokesman for He confirmed that he has been on leave from teaching since early this year, but he remains on the faculty and has a lab at the school. The U.S. scientist who worked with him on this project after He returned to China was physics and bioengineering professor Michael Deem, who was his adviser at Rice in Houston. Deem also holds what he called "a small stake" in - and is on the scientific advisory boards of - He's two companies. The Chinese researcher said he practiced editing mice, monkey and human embryos in the lab for several years and has applied for patents on his methods. He said he chose embryo gene editing for HIV because these infections are a big problem in China.

Honestly I'm on board with genetically engineered babies, as long as it's for health issues (resistance to viruses, muscular dystrophy, alzheimer's, etc) and not for comestic purposes (ie. giving a child blue eyes, or white skin, being skinny, etc).

Cloning would be interesting. Having said that, I don't think I could clone myself -- I don't want someone else to have my physical appearance and have to put up with the shit I did. Imagine though if I was cloned as a baby and grew up with my clone. It'd be like having a twin brother.

once gene editing takes foot, it will be used for all sorts of things. I can even see us reaching a point where "proper" parents are editing for the best genes for their babies, and a whole new race emerges that will make us extinct

LOL.. so khan isnt a too distant "fictional" scifi character

Not too sure if I would like this even if for health reason.
Plenty of abuse potential for creating "super" humans for the rich and powerful, or companies to prefer engineered people over those that are not.

EDIT: On the other hand, I wouldn't mind having a Neko woman!

The problem with these are generational. Do they hold up over time, do they interact properly with other chromosomes. Do they mutate. Down's Syndrome is a genetic disease where a piece of one chromsome breaks off and attaches to another chromosome. Break is always in the same place. The Re-attachment is mostly in the same place. How many ticking time bomb of genetic defects are we polluting in hte gene pool. Next thing you know you're on a vicious cycle of repair and compensation in positive feedback loop of mistakes and we're dead as a species.

As long as some population doesn't participate in the DNA modification, then the species is safe.

I'm down with this tech, don't even care if its used for looks. Humans need to keep on evolving somehow, and modern medicine has eliminated the old way. Need a new way.

Great documentary...

once the genie is out of the bottle it'll be impossible to put back in. Once China normalizes this procedure there's no stopping other countries to follow suit, simply because they don't want their citizens to fall behind genetically. It's inevitable mi amigo.

Every time we invent a new drug to keep someone alive longer than they would have otherwise and they are of breeding age and have kids, we are altering the gene pool.
This is just more direct.

This was done in hopes of slowing HIV.
Great.
No we have an overpopulated country no longer worried about condoms....
China is already producing babies at below the replacement rate of 2.1 per woman. Infact, the vast majority of countries are also producing babies at below the replacement rate. The over-population problem is going to solve itself due to the drop in the world wide fertility rates.

were thinking Gattaca... probably going to end up more like Splice.

Don't start with gene pool arguments; the same exact mutation could easily occur by random chance in nature. If the children can ultimately produce offspring, then the damage isn't bad enough to doom the human race.

I'm not only for this, I believe that we should go out of it's way to fix known genetic defects (such as our inability to produce Vitamin C) at the species level. We should absolutely build a better human.

I am 100% pro-vaccine, however I would go apeshit if someone told me I am a bad parent if I dont genetically modify my unborn child. Hopefully commies dont start mandatory gene splicing for "unwanted" characteristics such as being a minority, religious, female etc and just start cutting randomly lol

Harrison Burgeron at the genetic level. What could go wrong?

The ONLY time I'd be on board for something like this is in the case of severe, mortal disease.

I think there is probably an overestimation of our understanding of all the interactions between genes, particularly in a multi-generational context. Unintended consequences might be quite dire.

So are they trying to give these twins HIV afterward to test if it worked? Horrible to think...

So are they genetically engineering a race who will eventually create shit for themselves rather than steal it from others then resell?

They've been at it for some time, and this is the best they've got? I call bs. Superhumans or bust.

I hope their genetic babies last longer than their cheap manufactured crap :D
No way! Imagine a workforce that you can get maximum value of and then drops dead when they start costing money to take care of but have no useful production. The perfect society!

They don't worry about condoms now. That's part of the problem.
While not a scientific study...the number of females in China who actually got angry at me for wanting to wear a rubber was shockingly high. They often took it as an insult.
I'm willing to bet that China exceeds African-level ignorance of sexual diseases and their transmission...as well as pregnancy. Anything to do with sex actually.

Highly unlikely this can be engineered, they will just steal it ;) First thing will be engineered is likely obedience and blind trust in the party.

Nah. That would kill their education/film/TV/news sectors. It's their job to instill obedience and blind trust in the glorious CPC.

Check Latin American birthrates in the U.S or Muslims in Europe compared to the traditional populations. The only time birthrates have decreased is: when it is forced; the populous has switched their focus away from children into material goods; their believe their children cause GLOBAL WARMING, and so are self limiting; populations that have lost their religion (First World). The rest of the lot are having babies like a well oiled Pez dispenser!

Yeah. Ok. That's not at all why birth rates decrease. While I'm sure you can find a few nutters who are consiously abstaining from having children because of the constant doom and gloom fearmongering over AGW, they are exactly that....just a few nutters.

great. I prefer sex with no condoms.

of all the horrible things done to humans by humans, this ranks nowhere near the top.
