According to anonymous sources that spoke to the Wall Street Journal, Samsung is ready to celebrate its 10th anniversary of premium Galaxy phones by revitalizing the smartphone market with a new lineup of Galaxy S phones. The flagship Galaxy S10 "Beyond X" smartphone will feature a 6.7" screen, 5G connectivity, and six cameras; 4 on the back and 2 on the front. Lesser models will feature screens sizes from 5.4" to 6.4" and 3 to 5 cameras in total, but 5G network speeds are not planned at this time. Some phones will have "reverse wireless charging" which would allow Samsung phones to recharge other devices by placing them together.

Separately, Samsung is also set to release early next year its first ever foldable-screen device, which opens like a book and boasts a 7.3-inch display. Internally, Samsung executives are debating the foldable phone's name, with "Samsung Flex" and the "Galaxy Flex" emerging as two candidates, though the decision is far from final, according to a person familiar with the matter. The timing, design and phone features for all the devices could change since decisions are still being finalized, according to people familiar with the matter.

Six?

Why?

Is this the new marketing number du jour to compete on? We've gone from number of megapuxels to number of cameras??

This is getting kind of nuts.
The only thing that I can think of is streaming VR content to others with 5G. Not sure if you can do a fake VR movie with that small amount of cameras though.

6 will allow more amateur porn production during each unit of user time.

Brilliant move Samsung!

Bravo. /s

The camera is the last feature I care about on a phone. I'll pay more for for a higher quality build, faster processor, more ram, more storage, Better antenna, less bloatware and the list goes on. I dont want more cameras, I dont even want a front facing camera. just give me a phone that's not a bloated, cheap pile of shit.

It's not high on my list either. I have a DSLR for when I want to take great pictures. My cellphone is only ever used for spur of the moment "haha, look at this funny thing I saw" type of pictures. For that, even my old 640x480 camera in my Motorola flip phone did the job.

So, I assume this multi-camera bit is to take a picture with all the cameras at the same time and merge them, right? I can't imagine a phone has the processing power to properly merge all 4 relatively high resolution pictures so I'm guessing it just overlays them for a marginally better overall image?

Android phone... so it better allows Google to record everything from every direction when your camera is off. :D

The Smart Phone business has truly run out of ideas and innovation. Another shining example of when the idea becomes the institution. I'll stick with my Galaxy S5, thanks.

Too bad it'll still be bundled with Samsung's unremovable first party apps, launcher, and slow update schedule.

The international version of the Galaxy S9 is on the official supported list for LineageOS, so it's possible there will be a version of the S10, (or whatever it winds up being called so they are not sued by GM) that will work.

If I had to buy a phone today, it would likely be an international Galaxy S9 so I could flash LineageOS on it.

The next version will have 9 cameras. 2 will be pointed directlt at each other. 1 will be completely enclosed inside the case. Doesn't matter though, because it will have more cameras.

And to think, phones, until the past couple years, were producing perfectly good pictures with just ONE camera. What changed?

I want my phone to have a camera lens for every focal length between 12-50mm.

Security let Marketing past the door into the Engineering lab while the CEO was on vacation.

BTW, my first though on this was a Beholder.

They don't have room for an adjustable lens, so they are putting in 2 cameras. One with a wide angle, and one with a small telephoto lens.

I'd love to have a 30x zoom lens on my phone, but I don't want a phone that's over an inch thick.

Why 6 cameras? So they can be used for user surveillance better. You know that companies want to know everything that happens inside your house so they can make more money off of you

Future Samsung Galaxy?

None of those ever bothered me. Then again any time I've ever owned a Galaxy phone, the first thing I've done is root it and throw an AOSP based ROM to get rid of all the garbage.

I'm having a flashback of the last two decades of Gillette telling me that I needed eleventy razor blades for a better shave. Then telling me I only need two. The balls on those guys...

How many spy cameras do they really need? This is what the processor is doing all day, processing all of those cameras and microphones for key frames / sounds bullshit.

This is what I thought of;

Increasingly nice pictures hampered by a lack of zoom. This got us to two cameras which between pixel count and spacing of zoom ratios for the two lenses, gets you a reasonable approximation of a 1-3x zoom at least. Two lenses also helps with AR type tasks. So instead of gimped not quite the same dual lens setup, we'll get four from samsung.

Does anyone really see AR as a killer feature in mobile? Beats me, it's not a significant number at this time.

It's also possible they use it to extend the zoom range to something significant.

This.
It seems a lot of manufactures are heading down this road. Like these guys...

The Mate 20 features a 12MP main camera with an f/1.8 aperture, alongside a 2x optical zoom 8MP f/2.4 module, and a 16MP f/2.2 wide angle unit. The Mate 20 Pro’s camera configuration is more familiar, as the 40MP f/1.8 main camera as well as the 3x optical zoom 8MP f/2.4 module look to be identical to the ones found in the P20 Pro – here the addition is the new 20MP f/2.2 wide angle module.

The fourth cut out is the flash. Several are doing it on the front for wide angle shots and face unlock as well.

On the subject of the foldable "Samsung Flex", it brought back memories of this phone...

I bet it sells just as well.

And yet the P20 Pro has one of the highest rated picture quality. One normal lens camera, one B&W sensor for dynamic range and depth perception and less noise in low light (it's REALLY well known for its dynamic range because of this), then a telephoto lens, add in another wide angle and you have something like that S10 might have, and the two on the front are a normal and wide angle. Is it needed? No, Pixel does really well with one, however software image composition has come a long way and will play a huge role in cameras going forward.

Great example below from dxomark on it's dynamic range, first is from an iPhoneX, notice the window, everything outside is washed out, the second image is from the P20 Pro, where you can see the bright outside just as clear as anything else in the image.
